Although I know this thread would’ve been better suited in Bazaar forum, but I’m not sure how many technies frequent it on a regular basis.
Now that I’ve returned iPod nano and have been itching to get some other tech related gadget, I’ve been thinking along the lines of getting myself a PDA.
One of the reasons I feel a strong need for it is because I’ve become unorganized recently and although I use a daily planner for college, it’s a total mess and I often forget to look things up and end up missing important dates.
I’m looking for a PDA that I could use to record the number of hours I work on campus (on calendar), so that I could use it as a reference to fill out the expense sheets bi-weekly (so that I get paid accordingly).
Other than that, I wish to sort of switch over from a daily planner to a PDA where I could have reminders reminding me to get work done on time.
I would want a colour PDA and not too interested in getting one with a camera. I mainly need one to get myself more organized and avoid missing important dates/events for college and other such stuff.
Nah... I'm only looking for a stand-alone PDA and not one with a phone. I got Nokia 6620 less than 6 months ago and I did ponder over getting a Treo650, but I wasn't too impressed.
What's so special about iPAQ? It's too expensive for me at the moment.
Btw... I did get PalmOne Tungsten 32MB Handheld (E2). I'm looking forward to hear what others have to say about it. I still have 13 days remaining to return it. I've only used it for 15-30 minutes and so far I like it. However, the buyer's dissonance is there.
Stay with the E2. I've been a Palm fan for quite a few years (since the days of the original Palm Pilot) and they do their tasks well. The apps are so much leaner than the Pocket PC ones. I recently turned towards Pocket PC when I found the iPaq smart phone and bought it (iPaq 6315). I was greatly disappointed with the performance but there wasn't anything out there which matched its features so I kept it (the Treo 650 wasn't out yet, and even that didn't have some items that i was looking for).
There are tons of apps out there for the palm to get u thru everything u could come across. Let me know if u need help with it and I'd be ready to help.
If you just need it to manage your schedule, then even something as low end as the Zire 31 should be good enough.. ($150.. i think). The Tungsten E and E2 are both good, and if you're satisfied with the E2 then you should keep it. If you want something with a windows OS, then HP rz1715 should be ok.
If you're still undecided, you can go to www.brighthand.com --> Pda Advisor, and fill in the features you want and your budget, and it can recommend those which fit closely..
forget palm. As good as they are they are too outdated for anyone but the only office clerk who never installs anything. Have a look at the HTC range, also called i-mate in some countries. Maybe you can get it free in a mobile contract. In UK it's free with mobile phone contracts and the line rnetal in total less than the retail price.
Well, i just looked the treo 650 is around $600 canadian dollars, but its certainly the best out there, if you arent impressed by the techology it offers, either youre not looking at it properly, or you wont find anything else thats impressive either. I am a treo 600 user, and Im so impressed with it that I have decided to give 650 a try, there is a $200-300 difference that I have no problem paying, as this is the first time I was really satisfied by a PDA/Phone. Oh, and its got awesome reception too, none of the other phones (motorola, nokia etc) work at my place except the treo!
Risc is kinda right, well not entirely you can install a bunch of stuff for a price, but yeah palm is kinda outdated but then again if you want to stick with the palm standards, you dont have any other choices. Also, I didnt like the IPAQ, I got it and after the 5th day it crashed and I just returned it and switched to the treo.
^-- look at her requirements.. she doesn't need a phone, already has one. I know many people who use a pda JUST for the pda, not for the camera or phone. Palm isn't outdated, it has atleast 3x more software than PPC, and is widely considered much more easier to use for new users..
Spock, I was interested in Treo650 a while ago, but I went with another cell phone. Therefore, Treo650 right now is out of the question. Like ammarr has mentioned, my requirements are quite different at the moment. I only sort of want to get myself further organized. Perhaps the next phone that I purchase could be one with a PDA.
ammarr, thanks for the link. However, it only summarises Palm E2 and that's about it. I'll see how I like it and if not, I can always return it within 2 weeks time, insha'Allah.
Tofibaba, the software that you're suggesting, are they free or are they shareware? I'd definitely get in touch with you, insha'Allah.
If you are looking to buy blackberry my personal suggestion would be to wait till chirstmas.. :) depending on your needs, I think just getting a PDA would work if you only use it to sync up with ur outlook everyday whereas blackberry giving you phone + this amazing ability to have the emails on the go + your calendar sync wirelessly
Mybe it does or did in 1994 but this is 10 years on. Even PalmOne the people who make the treo and other hardware are now using PPC. I’ve had both and palm is great for simple tasks well designed software, problem free but you cant find anything decent to install other than black and white outdated stuff. PPC or ipaq as some said doesnt crash all the time. I have a windows smartphone HTC Typhoon and so far it’s only crashed once, the day I bought it. Been on for a good 3-4 months now not had a crash or lockup since. I dont see any palm offering a large screen, wifi, bt, gsm, cdma200 all in a single unit like the new HTC Universal.
so you say. Have a look on the net for games then comapre to ppc, do the same for sat nav, gps tracking, browsers and you'll soon ebay a palm. If I was so wrong why is palmOne changing to PPC for it's mew treo?
Also drivers for palm are **** as hell. I couldnt run a non palm SDIO card because palm had 2 years to release a driver for a wifi card but never got around to it. You had to buy their SDIO card which was new old stock at double the price.
Palm devices are just as good as PPC ones, unless you're looking for a 640x480 screen or a 600 Mhz+ processor. All my games and apps are color supported, and the variety of software is amazing. My friend who owns a HP 4150 is constantly amazed at what my Palm device can do. Palm is turning to PPC for Treo, but it will also release a PalmOS version. Also, you should turn to cnet.com and look at their 10 best devices for the year.. NO WONDER.. Treo 650 (Palm OS).. Tungsten T5 head the list..
For a start Palm are no longer a complete unit. PalmOne makes the hardware and PlamSource software. I have both and palm is ****e in comparison. yes plam is faster on less resources standard software bundled with the OS is better. But thats where it ends. Palm dont even have a driver for sandisk SDIO cards been on the market for ages.
treo 650 in comparison to the HTC Typhoon is bo||locks. Typhoon can do everything at size no bigger than a standard phone or battery life hit and their is no comaprisn to the HTC universal in palm world. treo is only a best seller in states holmbirth of palm as it's seen as simple to use and that web broeser is pants.
