I own a palm zire 72 and ****e it is, T3 is no better just well made and nice design. Also own a HP1940 anf HTC Typhoon. So I'm afraid I have used a palm.
Another flaw you can create a serial BT conection to handsets not in the profile of palmOS 5 e.g. T610 and 6230i are in the profile so easy enough to surf the web via your mobile phone but a for a new handset it's near mission impossible. You need a D500 profile. Cant create only download one by a updating program which comes with HotSync. Small problem is the website it tries to download from is no longer in operation so you cant use a GPRS connection via BT withought buying a old phone.
I think you need to let og of palm yes it was good but now not good enough... let it go....
Since I'm on a tight budget and have already purchased PalmOne Tungsten E2, could someone please share some tips, tricks and good free software that I could use with it?
To manage your schedule get A5 @ http://www.a5agenda.com - it offers a combined view of events and tasks.. read the little warning about its compatibility with OS5 though.
For playing mp3s, pockettunes is the best.. but its not freeware
easycalc is a full featured freeware calculator
card export allows you to use your sd card (if you have one on your pda) as a usb drive (not free)
Filez is a freeware file explorer
Plucker (www.plkr.org) can be used to download your websites for offline viewing
MSMount: Another great app. it lets you mount external storage (SD cards) as an addition to built in storage. A lot of apps ask to be installed on internal storage, so this gets u over that hump. Another one is PiDirect, play around with them
PocketMySQLAdmin: another beautiful app (ofcourse u need connectivity)
PQAs (Palm Query Application): If you have internet connectivity these are lean mean applicaiton that query real time data. Really fabulous. Some of the popular ones include MapQuest, MovieFone, and PrnNewswire (well the ones I’ve used).
There are tons of others. Compared to Pocket PC apps, as I mentioned before, most Palm applications are a lot smaller so they need less memory and load faster. For the last year or so I’ve been more involved with Pocket PC and BlackBerries (cuz of work) so haven’t been keeping track of Palm applications. My last Palm was Tungsten W (with the Phone).
I have used Palm and windows based Handhelds. I am like you is student(+) and occasionally struggle with keeping dates and finances (mainly bills dates). I found that these devices weren't that big of help. You have to get in the habit of putting everyfin in them, which sometime (occasionally) becomes a pain than anyfin else.
[Palm T3: Best design available for handhelds! I wish some Windows based handheld will come out with that]
Plam OS: It gets the job done. It has all the essentials and you can get most of the "need" software off the internet for it. It has virtually no eye candy. doesnt support advance functions and lot of basic things (such as bluetooth) - does become pain when you are dealing with Palm OS. Do want to stress - for normal calendar / tasks / schedules etc, it does what it needs to do well (less manuvering, more functionality)
Windows OS: Seems like its design a lot on eye candy (to look pretty). Supports lot of newer technology and advance functions (for example network to you home computer through wifi and browse your files ... copy / paste as normally do in computers). Remote Desktop (just like winXP) is built in. Wifi works well, so is bluetooth.
Basic stuff such as calender / tasks / bills / schedules - are almost up to par with Palm OS now.
The older ones had tons of issues and problems and worse was lack of support for microsoft and hardware manufacturers. Newer iPaq etc are much much better.
All in all, I would strongly suggest to go with windows based handheld now.
- Nicer
- More support
- Easier (especially if you are networking etc)
- More resale after
I can't really comment on Treo650 right now. Getting it next week, so let you know how that adds up.
Thank you all for the input and providing with some good software.
I downloaded onto my computer a few software from the website that Ammarr mentioned. However, I didn't have a chance to install it on the Palm.
I wanted to know if there's a specific procedure to properly install the software because the ones that I downloaded to my PC had 2-3 files each and I had no clue how exactly to load them on to Palm.
I bought the Palm Tungsten E2 with the 256 MB expansion today...The price was so great & Cheap...I bought both from the Thanksgiving Sale at Staples for 149$$ Combo price... ...Really cheap & i guess well worth it...
To install you just dble-clck the file and it should automatically attach to the Palm installer (which actually just copies the file to the installer folder) and the next time u sync it transfers it to your Palm. Once on the Palm you can either just leave it on the built in storage or move it to an external storage (SD card). But to use applications u'd need something like MSMount or PIDirect. U'd also be better served if you had an SD card reader, so you can move files around.
I've been out of the Palm arena for about a year so a little out of touch with the newer apps out there. But if you need help let me know.
