**PHILADELPHIA (AP) – Of all the prolific offensive performances in the opening games of this year’s NBA playoffs, Allen Iverson’s was the best.

Not only that, it was one of the greatest in NBA playoff history

Iverson scored 55 points Sunday night in a brilliant display of shooting, making 21 of 32 shots while eclipsing his previous playoff-high of 54 as the Philadelphia 76ers defeated the New Orleans Hornets 98-90.

Iverson scored 20 in the fourth quarter to help the 76ers hang onto the lead throughout the final 12 minutes of a closely contested, physical game.

Iverson joined Michael Jordan, Rick Barry, Charles Barkley, Wilt Chamberlain and Elgin Baylor as the only players to score 55 or more in a playoff game. Jordan holds the NBA record of 63.

Just two days into the postseason, there had already been a 46-point performance by Dirk Nowitzki of Dallas and a 43-point outing by Orlando’s Tracy McGrady. **

Iverson outdid them by a bunch, hitting nearly everything he tossed up with the exception of a stretch of five consecutive misses during the third quarter.

``I caught a rhythm. The basket looked like an ocean,‘’ Iverson said.

With Philadelphia clinging to a two-point lead, Iverson came off a pick from Keith Van Horn and hit a 3 to make it 89-84. On Philadelphia’s next possession, he dribble-faked Stacey Augmon off-balance, stepped back and hit another 3 to reach 51 points and give the Sixers a 92-84 lead with three minutes left.

After the Hornets pulled to 94-90, Iverson used his lightning speed to drive around George Lynch for a layup that gave him his final points with 37.3 seconds left.

Iverson reached 50 points for the third time in 46 career playoff games. It was his ninth game with at least 40.

Iverson reached 30 points just 3 1/2 minutes into the third quarter, but he missed his next five shots while being defended by Augmon before hitting a 3-pointer that gave the 76ers a 70-68 lead entering the fourth period.

Iverson then made his first four shots of the final quarter.

Eric Snow added 15 points and Aaron McKie 12 for Philadelphia.

Jamal Mashburn led the Hornets with 28.

Iverson had six assists in the first quarter, the last of which was the niftiest. Iverson tossed an around-the-back pass to Tyrone Hill at the foul line, and Hill gave it back and made a backdoor cut. Iverson found him instantly, threading a pass to Hill right under the basket for a dunk that gave the 76ers a 25-18 lead.

Iverson took a brief rest early in the second quarter, and New Orleans had a 13-0 run to go ahead 33-29. The remainder of the quarter turned into a foul-shooting exhibition as the Hornets were whistled for 13 fouls and Philadelphia scored 14 points at the line to overcome 4-for-18 shooting.

Snow drew charges on David Wesley and Baron Davis on consecutive possessions, forcing both to the bench with their third fouls with more than three minutes left before the half. Philadelphia led 49-44 at intermissionbehind Iverson’s 25 points.

Notes

Iverson’s overall career high is 58 on Jan. 15, 2002 against Houston. … Iverson scored or assisted on Philadelphia’s first 14 field goals. … Van Horn shot for 1-for-8 in his first playoff game with the Sixers, missing his final six shots – the crowd groaning increasingly louder on the last three. … Wesley finished with five fouls and five points. … Derrick Coleman had fivefouls and four points.

Playoffs are just gettin’ started, homies!

MAGIC vs PISTIONS

[thumb=B]mcgrady_170_030420.JPG[/thumb]

McGrady was 15-of-28 from the field.

The eighth-seeded MAGIC weren’t intimidated by the No. 1 PISTONS as Tracy McGrady’s 43 points helped MAGIC steal home-court advantage with a 99-94 win in Game 1 of the first-round playoff series. McGrady scored 17 in the final period to carry the Magic, while Drew Gooden stepped up to finish with 18.

Chauncey Billups tried to cut PISTONS’s deficit to one with less than 30 seconds left, but his shot went in-and-out. Richard Hamilton scored a team-high 28 points and Billups added 21. Both teams will face off again on Wednesday. MAGIC leads by 1-0.

LAKERS vs TIMBERWOLVES

[thumb=B]capt.JPG[/thumb]

Los Angeles Lakers head coach Phil Jackson, left, congratulates guard Kobe Bryant

LAKERS took their first step toward a fourth straight championship on Sunday, routing the TIMBERWOLVES 117-98 in Game 1 of their first-round playoff series. Kobe Bryant went off for 39 points and Shaquille O’Neal added 32 for L.A. Derek Fisher had 4 out 5 3-points shot!

It’s been an emotional week for the LAKERS. Shaq’s Grandfather passed away last Friday. And on Saturday morning, Shaq had a baby boy. He flew to Minnesota by his private jet on Saturday morning from L.A. It is not expected whether Shaq will play in Game 2 'cause he has to fly to South Carolina to attend Funeral.

Down as many as 20 points, the TIMBERWOLVES came roaring back in the second half but couldn’t slip past the LAKERS, Kevin Garnett scored a team-high 23 points and grabbed 14 rebounds and Troy Hudson added 17 for Minnesota. Not to be rude but LAKERS are too hot for WOOF WOOF. LAKERS leads by 1-0. Game 2 is on Tuesday.

SIXERS vs HORNETS

[thumb=B]allen_170_030420.JPG[/thumb]

Iverson’s 55 was a franchise playoff high.

WOW! What a game by A.I. 21-of- 32 from the field; added eight assists, scoring a career-playoff-high 55 points. That was off the hook performance! At one stage, I expected him to break the all time high playoffs record set by MJ. But the question is, will A.I be able to give the same performace as he did today or rest of the SIXERS, particularly Eric Snow take part in making baskets? Don’t get me wrong, HORNETS can come back if SIXERS don’t play together 'cause in today’s game, it was the effort of A.I. alone, though, he admitted it was team’s effort. :rolleyes:

Both teams ran out of foul limit in the 1st half of the game. There was no effort from the HORNETS. Jamaal Mashburn looked okay. HORNETS were very close to the victory but A.I.'s 55-points were too much to overcome. SIXERS leads the series by 1-0. Game 2 is on Wednesday.

Sacremento leading Utah 82-64 at the end of 3rd qrtr.

Spurs cruise to an easy win over Phoenix
Indiana tie up with Celtics.

CELTICS vs PACERS

[thumb=B]oneal_170_030421.JPG[/thumb]

Jermaine O'Neal was 9-for-15 from the field.

Indiana saw an 18-point lead dwindle to three early in the fourth, but put the clamps on the Boston in their first-round playoff series. PACERS did not allow Paul Pierce to burn them down the stretch this time. Jermaine O'Neal contributed 23 points with 20 rebounds and Reggie Miller added 18 points for the PACERS, defeating CELTICS, 89-77, to even their Eastern Conference first-round series at one game apiece. From CELTICS, Antoine Walker paced the CELTICS with 19 points and Walter McCarty finished with 16 points. In tonight's contest, Pierce, who was suffering from a head cold, finished with 14 points and nine rebounds, was held scoreless in the fourth quarter and shot just 5-of-18 from the field and 3-of-5 from the line. Without Pierce, CELTICS can't win. Same goes for PACERS. If O'Neal doesn't play good, they lost the game, therefore, I believe this 7-Game series b/w PACERS and CELTICS depends on Paul and O'Neal. On Game 3, CELTICS will try to take a 2-1 advantage ion Thursday at home.

SPURS vs SUNS

[thumb=B]mdf261158.JPG[/thumb]

Tim Duncan celebrates as Stephon Marbury walks off the floor.

After upsetting the top-seeded SPURS and stealing home-court advantage in Game 1, the SUNS couldn't stay with San Antonio late in Game 2, falling 84-76. Stephon Marbury tallied 32 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. It wasn't an easy win for SPURS. They were again poor shooting from the line. Emanuel Ginobili drilled a clutch trey with 1:02 left, and Stephen Jackson scored a team-high 23 points. Tony Parker played average. Tim Duncan tallied 22 points and grabbed 12 rebounds. 51 points come from the bench. During the last minutes of 4th quater , SUNS blew two chances by throwing away foul and rebound, otherwise, they could have tied up the game. SUNS are a young team and fearless against SPURS; and I see this competition getting even intense. Game 3 will be played on Friday @ Phoenix.

KINGS vs JAZZ

KINGS defeated JAZZ easily with a margin 108-95. Looks like a complete washed out by 4-0 as JAZZ got no answer of KINGS strength despite of playing without Divac and losing Chris Webber in the middle of the game 'cause of back-bone strained. Bobby, Jim Jackson chipped in 15+ points from the bench. Mike Bibby and Peja Stojakovic, as usual, were good. Game 3 will is on Thursday @ Utah.

New Jersey NETS, all the way!!! :k:
Beat the Bucks!!!

Yes indeed. Phoenix had the Spurs by their nuts till last last 7 minutes of the game. In the end it was all about Tim Duncan. Phoenix could have won if they had not made terrible shot selection. They should be still happy, they stole a game from Spurs and got the home court advantage now. Im predicting Phoenix wil win the series in 7 games.

Lakers are getting the thrashing of their lives.
10 minutes to go, score is 90-70.
A win for Minnesota will be huge, and a loss for Lakers will be devasting and might damage their hopes of winning 4th straight title.

Milwaukee defeated New Jersey only by 2 points to tie the series.

BUCKS vs NETS

[thumb=B]kidd1_170_030422.JPG[/thumb]

Jason Kidd and Gary Payton

After New Jersey took the advantage late in the fourth, Tim Thomas' trey with 3:01 remaining gave Milwaukee the lead for good as it evened up the playoff series with an 88-85 win in Game 2. Gary Payton rebounded from a disappointing Game 1 and had a game-high 22 points. Sam Cassell added 21 and Thomas finished with 18. New Jersey took the lead with 5:25 to go on a Kenyon Martin hook shot, but Milwaukee finished on an 11-6 run as the Nets fell. BUCKS will try to snag a 2-1 series advantage in Game 3 on Thursday at home.

LAKERS vs TIMBERWOLVES

[thumb=B]hudson_200_030422.JPG[/thumb]

Troy Hudson

Umair boy, easy easy. Don't start jumping on conclusions. LAKERS lost one game, and you concluded LAKERS won't be able to win the Championship title, eh? Do you even know what emotional loss LAKERS fans have been going through? Shaq's Grandfather passed away. He traveled from West to the East Coast, Minnesota to South Carolina in 4 days. That makes him tired, stressful; and this loss doesn't make LAKERS getting thrash of their lives. Even though, LAKERS lost it but KOBE-SHAQ duo were able to chipped in 50+ points.

About thrashing, you better ask your favorite MAVS about it, who got thrashed 25 times in a row @ STAPLES Center.

TIMBERWOLVES were offensive, defensive and aggressive from the start of the game. Troy Hudson and Kevin Garnett each broke the franchise playoff record for points scored in a game with 37 and 35 points, respectively. Garnett also added 20 rebounds. Defeating LAKERS with 28 points is huge, and definitely increase morale in WOLVES. One point should be noted, Garnett, Hudon never came in the figures of 30 points, not even get in the regular season, though, it was a team effort but most important part was played by Hudson and Garnett. If they(Hudson and Garnett) play with the same momentum rest of the games, I'm sure, it will be hard for LAKERS to win. 7-Game series is even.

TIMBERWOLVES will travel to Los Angeles. Game 3 is on Thursday @ STAPLES Center.

5Abi, Happy Birthday. :)

You could be right, homie but you know Tony Parker hasn't stepped up yet. And I think, if steps in, make baskets with great transition like he did in the regular season, SUNS might find Parker out of their reach.

PISTIONS vs MAGIC

Tracy McGrady(What a Champ!) improved on his impressive 43-point Game 1 performance by pouring in 46 in Game 2 but the PISTONS didn’t allow a single other player on the MAGIC to reach double figures. In the end, Magic dropped an 89-77 decision in Detroit against PISTIONS. Richard Hamilton scored a team-high 30 points and Defensive Player of the Year Ben Wallace grabbed 16 rebounds. Chauncey Billups added 15 points and eight boards for Detroit, which never trailed in the game. 7-Game series is now even. Next Stop, Florida.

SIXERS vs HORNETS

SIXERS takes command! Allen Iverson followed up his Game 1 double nickle with a game-high 29 points as Philadelphia downed the Hornets 90-85 in Game 2 of its playoff series. Kenny Thomas added 17 points and hauled in 16 rebounds. Keith Van Horn picked up 6+ rebounds.

Minus an injured Baron Davis, the HORNETS rallied from 17 points down to get to within seven points with 1:45 to go, but couldn’t stop the SIXERS. David Wesley paced New Orleans with 24 points. Jamal Mashburn suffered a fractured middle finger in the third quarter and finished with 14 points. HORNETS will look for 1st playoff victory at their home court on Saturday. SIXERS leads the series 2-0.

MAVERICKS vs BLAZERS

[thumb=B]dirk_0304191.JPG[/thumb]

Dirk Nowitzki

After Portland tied it up with less than a minute remaining, Steve Nash responded with a trey with 29.7 seconds left en route to a 103-99 MAVS victory in Game 2 of their playoff series. It was a treat to watch. Nash finished with 28 points and eight assists and Dirk Nowitzki added 25 points and nine rebounds. BLAZERS, without point gurad, Scot Pippen did put a great fight against MAVERICKS. Rasheed Wallace played average. BLAZERS will look up for 1st victory on Friday in Game 3. MAVERICKS leads the series 2-0.

Playoffs are kickin’!!! :dhimpak:

Thanks homes :D

Nothing could have been more motivatng for the Shaq and Kobe than to hear the chants of MVP for KG by the crowd during the waning moments of Game 2. The margin of defeat was 28 points. Lakers have been there before and came through. KG will always get his 30+ points no matter what, but guys like Hudson wont score 30+ points in every game.

Game 3: Stapples Center, 8 PM local time. Be there; Jack Nicholson, Denzel Washington and Andy Garcia will be there fo' shizzle mah nizzle :D

Come on Timberworlves, beat those annoying and arrogant Lakers and shut their fans' mouth for once.

Yes 5Abi, LAKERS have been there and came out good. If my memory serves right(correct me if I'm wrong), last time LAKERS had two striaght defeats in the 1st round of playoffs was in 2000. Don't remember with which team. Today's WOLVES victory over LAKERS have definitely paid their struggle off. They are playing defensively, offensively with great momemt of ball.

The game was dead from the start. It was Fisher's 3 point shooting that carried the game all the way to OT. Last 3 point shot at the end of 4 qtr by Kobe was damn good; and that made the whole STAPLES Center wild! The OT was a Thriller! The main reason LAKERS lost the game was 'cause of poor shooting from the line. Shaq, alone had missed half of FTs. Bryant finished with a team-high 30 points, while Shaquille O'Neal had 28 points, 17 rebounds and five blocks. By watching Shaq, I don't think he was mentally fit for tonight's game. There has been ups and downs in his life. Now, he gotta move on and rescue LAKERS.

Troy Hudson. Now, what can I say about him. The guy is full of energy, and doesn't seem to hesitate to take chance. I reckon MAGIC officials must be regretting, rightnow. They shouldn't let Hudson to WOLVES. I did a lil search about the guy, he played for MAGIC before coming into the WOLVES team. He didn't score 30+ points but he was very close. Garnett, who was fouled out, had 33 points.

Game officials were pathetic. They gave foul, when it wasn't really vice-versa. NUTS!

TIMBERWOLVES leads the series of 7-Game by 2-1. Next game on Sunday @ STAPLES Center.

Has anyone following Eastern Conference game? Don't come with scores. I'd rather like to hear from you all about the game than saying Go Blah This Go Blah That We Won They Won.

Lakers Lost!!!!!!!!!!!
Not a big fan of Timberwolves but whatever it takes to keep Lakers off to winning the champiosnship.

Umair above must be gloating now :smiley:
It was a thrilling game. Lakers are having a miserable time facing the full-court press by the T’wolves. They cant seem to match up the energy and intensity of the young T’wovles players. They are having a horrid time shooting and defending the ball. Kobe had a chance to win it for them with 12 seconds remaning in the regulation, but he missed the free throw. Game went into overtime and KG fouled out. This was now the best oppurtunity for the Lakers to close out the game, with T’wolves main weapon on the bench, but Anthony Peeler stepped up and filled in the shoes of KG.
Lakers are now 2 games away from elimination. Sundays game is a must win for Lakers else the season is over, im afraid :wave:

I guess the fan interest in this thread has faded since the Lakers are losing these days.

Well anyway, Dallas beat Portland, Spurs by Suns and Orlando beat Detroit.

/\

oh common man one loss from timberwolves isn't going to keep Lakers down.

2 losses!
