Naysh

Or perhaps it’s spelled as “naish.” What exactly does this word mean? Sounds like it means nahoosat or inauspicious or something with dire consequences. Growing up I would hear this word from relatives during summer vacations in Pak. Taang hilaana naisha hai. Kaalay kapray pehn’na naish hai. Billi ko tang karna naisha hai. And more recently I heard…Baalon ko khula chor k sona naish hai.

What are some that you have heard? And what do you think are the reasons behind these things being considered “naish”…?

Re: Naysh

Is it in Punajbi or Urdu?

Re: Naysh

My guess is that it's Punjabi.

Re: Naysh

Din charhay tak sona naish hai.

I wonder what is the etymology of Naishapur. I think it's a city in Iran.

Re: Naysh

Built by Sassanian emperor Shapur I the Great. Ni-Shapur mean new city of / by Shapur.... as Delhi was originally Shahjahanabad.

Re: Naysh

Nails bite karna naish hai.

Re: Naysh

Yup, heard of that one too.

Re: Naysh

Where are the Punjabis who know the language really well and can define the word?

Re: Naysh

Re: Naysh

^Yup! It's the same word. Now define it.

Re: Naysh

Are you calling me non-Punjabi? :emmy:

I have heard the word used sporadically, but I don’t know anyone who used the word routinely. It just means what you said above … nahoosat phailana. Any act/habit that is frowned upon or that displeases the other person can be called naish.

Fazool,bekaar

Re: Naysh

^okay, now I can understand that some habits displease others such as shaking your leg...which I have a habit of doing and it annoys others....but things like leaving your hair untied while sleeping...why is that a naish.

I think some of the things are thought to maybe bring misfortune?

Re: Naysh

I think it's stronger than fazool, bekaar...far more ominous, lol.

Re: Naysh

No, Maddie-kins…I’m not calling you a non-Punjabi…just a diluted one.

Re: Naysh

That makes two of us :hehe:

Re: Naysh

^True. I is diluted but misery loves company as they say. :hehe:

Re: Naysh

Naish is a punjabi as well as urdu word which means MANHOOS... like Cursed.. also it means Garha Hua Murda..

and in urdu it means, Kanta, Nokdaar, Zehar, Dank

Re: Naysh

^Thank you, HM.
