KARACHI: Pakistan Muslim League-N chief Nawaz Sharif has said the nation must stop treating India as the country’s biggest enemy, calling for a reappraisal of ties with New Delhi “if we want to go forward and progress.”

He said if the government cut down all expenditures by 50 per cent, a handsome amount could be set aside for debt servicing.

Nawaz Sharif, who arrived in the city on Monday for the first time after returning home from London, was talking to journalists at a hotel. Syed Ghaus Ali Shah, Mamnoon Hussain, Salim Zia, Iqbal Zafar Jhagra and Khwaja Saad Rafique, all leaders of PML-N, were also present.

The PML-M chief said the army budget and that of the ISI be placed before parliament for scrutiny in line with the practice in democracies.

Mr Sharif described the decision to set up an independent commission to investigate the Abbottabad fiasco as a first step to making parliament sovereign.

“We need structural changes and this inquiry has provided an opportunity to move forward and put the country on the right track, correct its direction by putting our house in order, establish the rule of law and bring all institutions under civilian control,” Mr Sharif observed.

The PML-N chief said if the government fixed responsibility for the Abbottabad incident and punished those found guilty, a message would go out to the world at large that the people of Pakistan would not brook another Abbottabad-like embarrassment.

In reply to a question, he said he was unaware if intelligence agencies had brought about the Pakistan People’s Party-Q League alliance.

Asked whether he would get in touch with MQM during his stay in Karachi, he said rhetorically: “What for. They are now part of the government. And May 12 should not be forgotten because if we forget the tragedy, similar incidents will continue to happen.” Mr Sharif was alluding to the bloodshed in Karachi on May 12, 2007 — the day Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry was unable to come out of the city’s airport.

“I don’t want to say anything lest I be misconstrued. However, an inquiry should be instituted into the May 12 happenings and the guilty brought to justice,” Mr Sharif said.

He said the practice of dismissing elected governments midway through their terms should be stopped.

Earlier Nawaz Sharif offered Fateha at the mausoleum of Quaid-i-Azam, where he went straight from the airport.

Re: Nawaz urges nation to stop treating India as ‘biggest enemy’

I didn't see anything wrong in improving ties with India. It's the biggest market, and we need business for our starving economy and jobs for millions.

Re: Nawaz urges nation to stop treating India as ‘biggest enemy’

Its hard to beleive Nawaz can say something sensible like this.

Re: Nawaz urges nation to stop treating India as ‘biggest enemy’

I agree with Nawaz sharif at least on this matter..

Re: Nawaz urges nation to stop treating India as ‘biggest enemy’

He is seeing an opportunity to make billions FOR HIMSELF with India, just like 1999 when he went there and created deals for his sugar mills. Corrupt idiot.

Re: Nawaz urges nation to stop treating India as ‘biggest enemy’

I agree with the tind.

Re: Nawaz urges nation to stop treating India as ‘biggest enemy’

Somehow?
He spent a fortune..!!!

Re: Nawaz urges nation to stop treating India as ‘biggest enemy’

Wow ... I'm annoyed that I didn't think of that .... People should stop second guessing his motives and realise that he is absolutely correct ... We need to make friends of neighbours more than ever.

I don't care why he is saying that or how he will benefit - the fact is that the Pakistani nation as whole will benefit. I just hope the Indian nation will share the sentiments ... We need to stop fighting with ourselves and rebuild our nation.

Re: Nawaz urges nation to stop treating India as ‘biggest enemy’

nawaz sharif's statement change three times a day, so i dont think one should take him seriously

Re: Nawaz urges nation to stop treating India as ‘biggest enemy’

the worst thing in the three countries , india ,pakistan, bangladesh , people’s expectations are very high from others.they want leaders, players, officers to be ideal, honest free from human weaknesses and law abiding , but these same people given favourable circumstances try to do every type of beimani , jhooth and rishwatkhori, not only they do this, they encourage others in the family to do such things to get success in life , leaders are not imported from some other lands they are also part of us.
here on these forums i have seen people abusing like anything their presentand ex prime ministers, presidents, leaders, nazims,if they did anything wrong in past they have got the punishment, what do you want should they be killed ?till citizens of a country dont become honest how can you produce honest leaders, i think we should support our leaders if they are talking about peace.

Re: Nawaz urges nation to stop treating India as ‘biggest enemy’

exactly my feeling, he is now busy in organizing his party while others has been exhausted themselves...

Re: Nawaz urges nation to stop treating India as ‘biggest enemy’

What he said is right!!! We do not have to fall in love with India nor does we have to be in war-like-situation with India... we need to create a working relationship which can solve the issue and not complicate them... NS did that in 1999, when Vajapayee visited Lahore in a bus and JI burned the Civil Secretariat while protesting... right after this visit, the great mushy started his activities and started Kargil War between the countries

Re: Nawaz urges nation to stop treating India as ‘biggest enemy’

Army and its b-team JI will not like this. NS tried relations with Vajpayee but Kargil debacle by army let the relations went down the gutter. Before him, BB also tried good relations with India when PM Rajiv Ganhdhi visited in her tenure as PM of Pakistan. Army is the big hindrance in normal relations because of justifying its huge existence, always declaring India as enemy # 1 and brings Kashmir dispute, rest band baja is done by JI. More over foriegn affairs is still controlled by army chief and perhaps continue its control if NS comes to power. What NS is saying, if normal ties with India are restored, Pakistan does not need huge army, more than 50% of million soldiers and officers will go to their homes? NS might get text message of threat from ISI which is a modus oprendi in Pakistan who so over speak against interests of the army.

Re: Nawaz urges nation to stop treating India as ‘biggest enemy’

People are very optimistic, let's see....

Re: Nawaz urges nation to stop treating India as ‘biggest enemy’

Good gesture by NS.
I hope he becomes prime minister of pakistan while manmohan is still in pm house .
May be he should make an unofficial visit to India before elections, that will raise his stature a whole lot.

Re: Nawaz urges nation to stop treating India as ‘biggest enemy’

They have had their chance, but it’s too late. They can leave Pakistan politics, baatein banana sab ko aata hai.
We need real leaders, not old corrupt *****es… i mean tigers. :rotfl:
