The PPP’s stance on the reinstatement of the judges is continuing to retard further with time. According to the latest announcements, the PPP now plans to reinstate the judges through a resolution introduced in both the houses. This is opposed to the earlier position of a resolution passed in the National Assembly alone. At the same times, efforts are afoot to break the unity of the deposed judges, which are now being approached informally with offers of reappointment on person by person basis. The refusal to reinstate the judges through a simple resolution in the National Assembly and the constant switching of positions on this issue has made it stark clear that Mr Zardari is keen to keep Justice Chaudhry out of the system and secondly he does not want an independent judiciary. Just like Gen (r) Musharraf he is more comfortable with the PCO judges than those who are willing to show integrity.
The PPP’s unwillingness to reinstate judges has sucked out all the post-election enthusiasm firstly because this issue has been critical to the public ever since Justice Chaudhry took an independent stance vis-à-vis Gen (r) Musharraf but even more importantly because an independent judiciary is critical to real reforms in Pakistan. It is only when there is an independent judiciary that the executive can be checked from the plunder of public resources–otherwise a norm in Pakistan. An independent judiciary is also important to check repeated military interventions. The whole post-election euphoria was based on the premise that with the reinstatement of these judges there will be making of a new judiciary in Pakistan, which would be in a better position to check the executive. The PPP leadership has, however, shown that it is clearly in no mood to support a system that will need it to be more accountable in its actions.
At the same time, it is clear that Mr Zardari, like his late wife and Gen (r) Musharraf, is keen to keep the American administration on his side. The London visit of US assistant secretary of state Richard Boucher to resolve the deadlock between the PPP and the PML-N confirmed that the US is still playing a central role in the decisions taking place in Pakistan. The US administration has from the start resisted the reinstatement of the deposed judges because an independent judiciary in Pakistan does not suit its interest. Clearly, Mr Zardari is also playing up to the US administration by complicating the issue of reinstatement of the judges. The bottom line is that the PPP today is just a replica, in terms of its intentions and policies, of the government of the PML-Q under Gen (r) Musharraf. There is no real change in reality.
What, however, is extremely promising is the role of Nawaz Sharif. The PML-N is definitely the party which today represents the true public wishes. Nawaz Sharif today is showing that integrity and steadfastness that one would expect from a real leader. This integrity is also reflected in the senior leadership of the party, which seems very much with Nawaz Sharif in appreciating the need to play a politics based on principles and not just simple opportunism. The PML-N has made the right decision to withdraw its ministers from the current government after it became clear that the PPP is not willing to reinstate the judges as promised in the Bhurban agreement. The party will only gain legitimacy in public eyes with this move.
The breakdown of the coalition has been viewed as a setback to the political process in Pakistan but what is the point of forming a coalition when the leading party clearly does not have the right intentions? In fact, when the leading party is going so blatantly against the public mood, it is critical that there is a strong opposition within the parliament to check it. It is therefore good that the PML-N has withdrawn its members from the cabinet. It has also acted wisely by not entering into a bitter confrontation with the PPP and instead in the initial instance plans to respond to it on an issue by issue basis. Nawaz Sharif right now definitely needs all the public support. He is showing great courage not only because he is standing on principles but also because he is resisting the US pressure in that process. By taking these independent positions, he is also posing higher risk to his own life. He is thus the man to be appreciated.
i am so glad that Dr. Bano has discovered a true leader in the whole of Pakistan. I wish she had used a few more things to evaluate "goodness" of a national leader.
Leadership generally is a combination of many things. Some are inspiring, some are doers, and some are plain old revolutionaries.
Dr. Bano and many other leftist Oxford-ers and Yale-rs have a habit of declaring "Da Leader" based on a very narrow band of things that are important to the leftists at the very moment.
The problems however are much more complex than the colored and myopic little world where all the extremists and leftists dwell and pro-create.
Let's take the case of Pakistan. It is a country with lots and lots of people, lots and lots of resources, and yet thanks to the leftist revolutionaries this country has been chained to the miserable existence where poverty, unemployment, terrorism, and inflation are the norms of the day.
So we analyze NS for his leadership skills that are necessary to get us out of the current situation and take us to the golden and sunny beaches of the heaven.
Unfortunately the NS of yesteryears is gone, replaced by a mean-spirited revolutionary whose sole aim of life is to get his sweet revenge from Prez. Musharraf.
When a leader gets down to personal vendata, he no longer qualifies to be a "true national leader". Instead he becomes a "true and petty-revolutionary". And Dr. Bano types always lap up revolutionary sloganism as that is the only world leftists want to live in. So in the name of leftists of Pakistan "revolution zindabad".

Nawaz is a joke. His motorway, yellowcab, videophone, micro-credit scheme, nuclear test ordeal and Kargil operation without his knowledge are screaming examples of his administration and leadership skills. The guy could do wonders like ZAB if he had any plans, but again who comes into power to serve the nation. He increased his family empire freaking 150 times since 1979. Only Google's birth to its IPO would be a close example of this tremendous growth.

He has no ability to do any wonders. Throughout his political history, he has been an indecisive leader, and committed so many blunders that he rivals those committed by his mentor Zia-ul-Haq.
just now Lahore - Sindh National Alliance President and former Chief Minister and Governor Sindh Mumtaz Ali Bhutto has called PML-N Quaid Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif as last hope of the nation.
He said that masses had eyed on Nawaz Sharif for change of their fates. He urged upon Nawaz Sharif to come out of political quandary and get active against anti-state elements with national enthusiasm.
He said that hired killers and dacoits in the leadership of PPP co-chairperson Asif Ali Zardari were enjoying the taste of power and more saddest part of the show was that all government institutions were protecting him.
He foretold that who gained maximum benefits on the assassination of Benazir Bhutto was her real killer. He said that masses had been cheated on large scale and now no one could save the country from bloody revolution.
In an interview with The Nation here on Sunday, he said that before the martyrdom of PPP Chairperson Benazir Bhutto, masses were seeing toward her for change of system but after her demise, PML-N Quaid Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif had turned to be last hope of the nation.
Mumtaz Ali Bhutto suggested Nawaz not to compromise instead emerge as strong voice of people. He feared “if Nawaz gets on government train rather than lawyers’ bus, it will be more than tragedy.”
He praised lawyers movement and said that lawyers made Musharraf bend on his knee and they would force him to run away from Pakistan. He said that it was the tragic that 18th February mandate which proved to be totally against President Mush-arraf, was making his hands strong due to poor working relationship among political parties in the coalition government.
He said that under the turbulent situation, not only the MQM, but along with PML-Q , PPP had been working as chum of President. It was beyond the apprehension what happened to the self-respect of “Jialas” of PPP. that they are doing nothing against the assassins of Benazir Bhutto who were still at large despite the formation of PPP government in centre.
He has no ability to do any wonders. Throughout his political history, he has been an indecisive leader, and committed so many blunders that he rivals those committed by his mentor Zia-ul-Haq.
Zia-ul-Haq made the country great and strong and Nawaz gave the clean governance as much as possible. You have to understand he didn't have a lot of powers in his hands- but Nawaz worked with Dr. Samar Mubarakmand- father of Pakistan's nuclear bomb to make country safer and capable. I hope Nawaz gets clear mandate and sharia gets implemented in Pakistan- Inshallah.

Yeah yeah, I heard it was nawaz himself who bolted on the nuclear bumb and lowerd it down the shaft for damakha. Instead of Uranium, halwa from raiwind was used in the atam bumb.
I am a normal citizen of Pakistan. Look at Nawaz’s tenure in Pakistan and his brother’s in Punjab- they were period of prosperity.. Rice was NOT Rs. 125/Kg and I remember in Lahore electricity was 24/7.
what the sharifs did in the past was condemned by everyone and th public lashin they recieve was known to them, now however they have changes. They are not doing n e thing for power, they have based themselves on principles and a national stance is being taken by Nawaz Shaif. There is immense pressure on him from US but he is resisting.
