Nawaz emerges as wily master blaster

News Analysis

By Rauf Klasra

ISLAMABAD: After several closed-door political moves in Islamabad, Murree, Dubai and London, PML-N leader Nawaz Sharif has emerged as one of the shrewdest politicians of Pakistan.

He has not only successfully managed to keep his political alliance with Asif Ali Zardari intact, to keep the pro-Musharraf forces away from the power corridors, but has also secured the top slot of chief ministership of Punjab for his younger brother.

And after the masterstroke of resigning from the cabinet, the many secret compromising deals with the PPP notwithstanding, he has received applause from the public and the media on the one hand and has succeeded in portraying Asif Ali Zardari as the political villain on the other.

It is being said that in the name of opposing Musharraf, Nawaz is now doing everything which is politically questionable by all those who have long heard him make tall claims, first in Jeddah and later in London, that he would never do the politics of expediency and power.

As if this was not enough to push the PPP into a political corner, unlike the general perception about him, Nawaz has now secretly opened the lines of communication even with his worst political enemies, the Chaudhrys of Gujrat.

This new move, which almost went unnoticed in the national media, was launched by Nawaz, believing there were no permanent friends or foes in politics, only interests mattered. The reported ‘no’ of Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain to President Musharraf to step down from the presidency of PML-Q is said to have given Nawaz a window of opportunity to adopt the forgive and forget policy vis-a-vis the Chaudhrys.

Ch Nisar Ali Khan has been given the mission to bring the Chaudhrys of Gujrat around and into the fold of PML-N Incidentally, or deliberately, Nisar who is also a shrewd politician, had already held a “chance” meeting with the Chaudhry cousins Shujaat and Pervez Elahi during an air trip from Lahore to Islamabad on a PIA flight.

These former foes are about to get closer in the name of confronting their common enemy ó Musharraf. This hour-long chance meeting on a PIA plane has given a clear indication that Nawaz was finally preparing to accept his former colleagues to further isolate Musharraf.

Nawaz whose politics revolves around opposing Musharraf is now preparing himself for this great reunion and one fine morning may be seen smiling on television screens embracing the Chaudhrys under the guise of principled politics.

He will market the twist and turn by spinning the story that he had accepted the Chaudhrys only to further isolate Musharraf. As the media and politicians are already tired of Musharraf and his palace intrigues, so they would rush to congratulate Nawaz, instead of asking some tough questions about his previous promises or claims.

In exile, Nawaz always promised not to do power politics or politics of expediency but now he is doing both and, surprisingly, is not being reprimanded from any corner. Background interviews with some political sources revealed that Nawaz had paid a very small price in the shape of quitting the cabinet because he is said to have struck a secret deal with Zardari in their closed-door meetings that both would continue to cooperate in future as PML-N would not let his party government fall in Islamabad and PPP will protect the PML-N in Punjab.

Zardari too has been sensing the political games of Nawaz and has been sending his own discreet messages. One such indirect move was to let PM Gilani meet the PML-Q rebels but if he really wanted some “lotas”, Zardari could have sent his tough guys and got what he wanted.

The Gilani-Wattoo meeting rang alarm bells in the Nawaz camp. And the message was well received asking him not to think of quitting the alliance at the Centre, otherwise the PPP had its options to take him back to the politics of the 90s when Benazir Bhutto and Nawaz were out to get each other.

Nawaz also did not want to see the papers of his brother Shahbaz being rejected by the Election Commission of Pakistan as it had happened earlier. So, he decided to behave.

But in the process Nawaz has quietly gained the sympathies of the public by asking his ministers to resign yet no one is asking why he was still offering political support to a regime which was not ready to restore the judges.

Nawaz got the votes in the name of the judges but he has ended up extending the rule of someone like Zardari who hates those very judges. One wonders that if this is not the politics of expediency which he always rejected during his exile, what is it?

Re: Nawaz once again shows his true colours.

The game being played by Ganja
well it looks like this guy is playing a very clever game and can take our nation down so i thought id make a topic on it.

pakistanis are as ignorant as it gets and get fooled easily, you can see this by how everyone is saying ganja stood upto his promises and how his popularity has increased. How ignorant are most of us, what about his promises in the so called charter of democracy in 2006 which clearly stated he will never accept a PCO judge of musharraf and not to forget how he use to call the judges, musharrafs men before march the 9th.
has everyone forgot about those promises. how easy is it for politians to make fools out of us.

the main point here is talking about his game plan and what his next moves are, he first very gracefully quits the gov. and then walks to the election commison to file his nomination papers for the by-election.

the guy did all he could to make himself popular again, musharraf comminted a big mistake last year on march the 9th by suspending the CJ, not because he was a good guy, we all know he was a goon, but because it gave a dead politian the chance to come back alive and shine and thats what ganja did, reports say some $500 million had been spent on the judges movement and no prizes for guessing where it came from, he played his cards very well and made the presidant very weak.

this man has played a very clever game and thats how a corrupt criminal like him gets so popular, now what is his next move, will be interesting to know. will he try and destablize pakistan again to try and make another election happen, well zadari, musharraf and even kayanni will have to be very carefull.

Re: Nawaz once again shows his true colours.

Yea, nobody stands for principles more than Mushrraf. BTW, whatever happened to his "2nd skin"?

Re: Nawaz once again shows his true colours.

If it is true then it does make strategic sense. PML Q and PML N are natural allies, it is only Musharraf that is standing in their way to reconciliation. PML and PPP are natural rivals and eventually their alliance will fall apart as their interests conflict with each other. It is only Musharraf that is holding this alliance between them together.

Re: Nawaz once again shows his true colours.

^^^ I have some serious doubts about this article. Thats why I try not to give too much credence to whats being published in "The News". They try to sensationalize news stories & sometime w/o much substance.

As for NS & Ch brothers, I think there is too much bad blood between them & its hard to see how they can come together again.

P.S. I think Choudrays realized that Mushrraf was using them for his own personal gains & Mushrraf thinks he is in deep $hit hole b/c of Choudrays who failed to delivered on anything they promised him. Thats why he wants to replace them with someone else to head Q-league. So, lets see what happens...

Re: Nawaz once again shows his true colours.

Nawaz has now secretly opened the lines of communication even with his worst political enemies, the Chaudhrys of Gujrat.

:hehe: So much for Nawaz Sharif and his principles.

Re: Nawaz once again shows his true colours.

Reinstating judges you can call principles. Not accepting Musharraf as the legal President you can call principles. Working with PML Q particularly if it is prepared to abandon Musharraf does not conflict with any principles.

I hope this news is true because it does make a lot of strategic sense. PML Q and N and both natural allies. In the absence of alliance with PPP (which would be short-term anyway) there is every reason to pursue an alliance with PML Q.

Re: Nawaz once again shows his true colours.

signing the charter of democracy was also principle and then siding with CJ was proabably also principle :hehe:

Re: Nawaz once again shows his true colours.

:hehe: Yes.

Charter of Democracy - 2006 - We will not deal with any judges who have ever taken a PCO oath.
Today - 2008 - PCO judges like Iftikhar are hero’s.

Yesterday - Ch. Shujaat is the devil incarnate.
Today - Ch. Shujaat is an angel.

Nawaz Sharif and his constantly changing principles. :rotfl:

Re: Nawaz once again shows his true colours.

Reza the same goes for Musharraf.

2006- Iftikhar chuadhary is best person to be chief justice
2007-Asks Iftikhar chaudhary to resign----- he refuses

Yesterday- Chaudhary Shujaat is a good man (writes in his book)
Today- Asks chaudhary Shujaat to resign from ML-Q leadership----he refuses

Re: Nawaz once again shows his true colours.

So Rauf Klasra has won credibility now :k:

Re: Nawaz once again shows his true colours.

Good points :k:

The Mush lovers are so out of touch with reality :cb:

Nawaz Sharif has gained enormously by his stand on the judges, is on his way back to being PM, and these MQM/Mush wallahs are so scared of what he is going to do to them :cb:

Re: Nawaz once again shows his true colours.

Are you saying that Nawaz Sharif is following in the footsteps on President Musharraf? :k:

Don’t be surprised if you wake up one day, and see on tv Nawaz Sharif and his clan meeting President Musharraf. After all BB’s meeting with President Musharraf last year in Abu Dhabi stunned her diehard supporters (some even went MIA for months). Anything is now possible in the topsy turvy and fast changing world of Pakistani politics.

Re: Nawaz once again shows his true colours.

Thank you for admitting Musharraf is no different than Nawaz Sharif :k:

Re: Nawaz once again shows his true colours.

The charter was signed in 2006 therefore it applies to PCO judges after 2006. What exactly does ‘dealing’ with them mean anyway?

The issue for me is not PCO or non PCO its about upholding the law without fear or favour. That is why I and many others are behind the Chief Justice. Without the rule of law Pakistan cannot fully develop.

Re: Nawaz once again shows his true colours.

No it does not. It applies to any PCO judge who had taken the oath during any part of Musharraf's rule from 2000 onwards. So all the deposed judges fall within the ambit of the Charter of Democracy.

Iftikhar Chaudhury upheld the law? when:-

  • He swore an oath on the PCO in January 2000, and got himself promoted from the BHC to the Supreme Court? i.e. he took the place of judges who refused to take the PCO oath.

  • Was one of the judges who validated the military coup in May 2000 on the basis of "doctrine of necessity"?

  • Was one of the judges who went to the Aiwan-e-Sadr in June 2001 to "persuade" President Rafiq Tarrar to resign so that Musharraf could take over the Presidency.

  • Was one of 5 SC judges who unanmiously dismissed all challenges to the LFO, 17th Amendment and two offices bill in 2005.

  • Took an oath on the PCO/LFO-amended constitution in 2005 when he was sworn as Chief Justice.

The Right Honourable Chief Justice Abdul Hameed Dogar has quite a long way to go before he achieves the outstanding record of achievment that ex-CJ Iftikhar has in "upholding the law without fear or favour"

Re: Nawaz once again shows his true colours.

^ I don't know about the above neither am I particularly interested in them. As far as I am concerned, the CJ tried to uphold the law, by holding the government accountable for which he was removed. He needs to be reinstated.

I agree that the military had to take over because of the bad policies of PM NS at the time. If the Parliament votes through a constitutional amendment giving Mushy the right to hold two positions for a limited time and run the country then the CJ cannot do anything about that.

Re: Nawaz once again shows his true colours.

Nawaz sharif man. tsk tsk tsk. Kya low class banda hai.

Re: Nawaz once again shows his true colours.

Arshad, are you saying that because you hear propaganda of Media and politician or you also think?

I know that ignorance of truth sometime is bliss, but from your statement it seems that you do not know the reality. You should know that government did not removed Iftikhar in March 2007, but perception was created that he got removed. Later, when Ifitkhar made thing worse and became not only controversial but started behaving like an ignorant (*), creating anarchy in the country, then only emergency came and he got removed.

If you could think, you would know that if allegations come against a judge (or CJ) to President than unless President is crook, it is duty of President to send those allegations as reference to SJC for investigation. In past, every government was crook and even though many allegations came against judges, no reference was sent to SJC for investigation by President. On the other hand, if government wanted, they sacked judges at will without cause or reference.

This was first time in Pakistan history when laws were followed by government by sending reference to SJC by President instead of ignoring allegations against a Judge that reached President, something all honest President should do ... or honest government should do by advising President to send reference to SJC (references were pending in SJC but none was from President, and thus they were left as pending).

This honesty or weakness of President that instead of pulling the ear and sacking Iftikhar, he sent reference to SJC got fully exploited by politician, Judiciary and media paid by goon politicians. They started propaganda and civil disobedience, and government kept showing weakness by not suppressing illegal actions effectively, but started tolerating their monkey dances led by Iftikhar and Atezaz (leader of goons) on road, media and judiciary.

Unfortunately, instead of discussing reference and contents of reference, discussing wrongs that Iftikhar was doing for personal benefits, crooks like Atezaz and his goon followers from judiciary, politics and media, used media effectively for their propaganda making an argument that reference was politically motivated, and thus concealing (hiding) the real contents and causes of reference (thus it never came out in media for discussion). Government also played stupid by not letting content of reference out for discussion in public media, following moral rule that if something is under investigation then that should not be discussed in publci, but when government was seeing that devil Atezaz and crooks behind Iftikhar was twisting facts behind action, they should have come out in media discussing the allegations in reference and justifying the reference.

I bet that you would not even know all the contents in reference, but if you think that if allegation comes then still sending reference was so bad than you should also think why it was bad and if a judge in judiciary is alleged to be corrupt, is it right or wrong to get that allegation investigated by top judges of Supreme Court and High Courts or not? (SJC consists of 3 top judges of SC and 2 top judges of High courts).

If Iftikhar was not guilty why he was so worried? Obvious if Iftikhar was not guilty than 3 top judges of SC and 2 top judges of High court together (that is SJC composition) after investigation would have exonerated Iftikhar of all allegations. But to start protesting against reference so that investigation should stop is to me a certain proof that Iftikhar was corrupt and guilty of all what was in allegations. I also believe that those judges who instead of letting the investigation on reference continue gave ruling that investigation should stop were also corrupt and acted to save their corrupt leader (Iftikhar).

You should also know that according to Transparency International survey of Pakistan, Judiciary was 4th most corrupt institution before Iftikhar but later investigation when Iftikhar was CJ, TI found that judiciary of Pakistan became 3rd most corrupt institution of Pakistan.
