Isn’t it sad that on Pakistan’s independence day, there are pakistanis out there who are ashamed to say they are Pakistanis or of Pakistani descent?
Re: Nationalism on Independence Day
Yes, that seems to be true. Pakistan is just a political compact and is wrongly being magnified into a nation.
Re: Nationalism on Independence Day
^ shutup.
Im in Karachi this year for the Independence day and it is so great to be proven wrong. I was amongst the scare mongers who thought that nationalism and patriotism amongst pakistanis is waning. I have never seen a more racuous, and universal celeberation of independence day in any country i've lived in.
Every other house on my street is sporting the flag on its roof, most two. The house next to me has gone overboard with three flags and flag-lets lined all across the exterior of the house. every shop has an independence day say, KFC has a "Freedom to choose" menu, everyones trying to cash in on the patriotism displayed on every other car and every other house. Yesterday we figured we'd go to McLeod road (Karachi downtown) to see if there'd be any lights. Not only was every building brightly and some quite creatively lit (habib bank and nbp seemed to have been inspired by vegas), it was so jam packed you couldnt move. Crazy. People on minivans, trucks, riding on the roofs of buses, on cycles, one group of larkay thought it would be fun to do bhangra while riding on motorbikes. every car ofcourse had the flag on the window, one dude had painted his car green and white, another had taken things a step further and arrived in nothing but his underwear and green and white paint. things ended with fireworks at 12, and we headed out through some byways only my ammi knew about apparently.
after 12, every idiot headed off to clifton, all the roads to the beach were jammed :D. sadly we live at the beach. lotsa noise.
it is so great to live in a city where you can go and drink the greatest chikoo shake ever at 2 am with all the shops open and packed with people who have an equally sad grasp on the importance of waking up on time.
Re: Nationalism on Independence Day
This can be called an illusion only. Only government buildings have been decorated. Public is mostly unconcerned. The summar heat is also high!
How can there be nationalism if there is no nation?
Re: Nationalism on Independence Day
you know what, you and i could call each other liars for a long time. i'll just post pictures of the people on the beaches carrying pakistani flags, the decorated homes and cars, and lit up buildings if i can go there again, and we'll see who has a better grasp on reality.
the question you can then ask is how can there be such nationalism if there is no nation :)
Re: Nationalism on Independence Day
Ravage,
Don’t burn blood for some idiots, who are here just to humiliate our nation on this big day… who know nothing about Pakistan and Pakistanis, never visited Karachi but can lecture for hours about Karachi how bad it is …
You chosen the right approach just post the pictures and shut their mouth :-)
You are the man :-)
Re: Nationalism on Independence Day
i will in a few hours, im stuck at home for a bit.
Re: Nationalism on Independence Day
^-- I will suggest you to have a quick visit to the city's major places and take more snaps, like Building, II Chandreegar road, Clifton, Burns Road, M.A. Jinah Road, Mazar-e-Quid, Taqriq road, Bahadurabad, and so on... (forgetting names) ...
I am waiting :-)
Re: Nationalism on Independence Day
Edit: Nevermind
Re: Nationalism on Independence Day
Ah… really? “Dinosaur” want me to eat you so that you could see all the celebration for yourself from my stomach in the outside world. Would it make you stop bullsh!tting then? You know what, I know how desperately all the indians want to believe and spread Pakistan was a mistake which should have never happened. Many of you even know it is not true but you like to believe it and spread it anyway and further manipulate people like PCG and worst and further manipulate our naive people through them. Just like I often pray God may bless such brains with some sense, I also pray that He taught all those intentional manipulators of our people so good a lesson that the black clowns would never forget in the centuries to come and never think of laying those manipulative traps again.
Re: Nationalism on Independence Day
I got more text msgs today wishing me a happy independence day than i get on eid (dont know if that is good or bad). I got calls from 2 friends asking me if I have extra Pak flag pins. I wear one all week of August 14, every year.
Re: Nationalism on Independence Day
Sorry dada abba, I couldnt get that far away, I unfortunately live in Clifton which is way backed up at these times. I didnt have to go too far to catch some nice snaps thought :)

apologies for the quality of the pics. driving in karachi under conditions like these with one hand on the camera taking pictures isnt easy :). anyway I have a whole bunch more, might upload more later. I like the patriotic taxi! also the bunch of guys in the back of the truck saw me taking pics and requested one for themselves. didnt come out so good. :-/
this is all stuff from about a half mile on the stretch of the road along the beach, i couldnt make my way to seaview which is where the real action would be i'd imagine. way too many people around.
i wanted to post these regardless of dinosaur sahab, these scenes are nice to see.
Re: Nationalism on Independence Day
I've been watching Geo..they show clips here and there of Jinnah, Iqbal, the freedom struggle and all the sacrifices. It really makes you happy that Pakistan is a free country. We have an identity and freedom to practice Islam.
However, there should be more to a country than cricket and naan kabab to be 'proud' of.
Re: Nationalism on Independence Day
while I agree that we should want to accomplish more for our country, i dont think patriotism and affection for one's country should be conditional upon national accomplishments. after all, all countries prominent in the world today were at one time or the other, at the absolute lowest in stature and accomplishments. it took people who were proud of their country regardless of its current condition to make those nations rise.
Re: Nationalism on Independence Day
^ agree completely. people should think of progress at an individual level atleast instead of naan pakora/kabab and stop giving a damn about indian "philamms". Instead WORK and WORK not looking for a chance to close the business/shops and let the country suffer. This would give rise to making the country prosperous overall.
Re: Nationalism on Independence Day
ravage - our people need real motivation to WORK. they love to sit home eating pakoraas watching some bull exported by the neighbours. this is not how a country progresses. well, atleast we should wake up at an individual level rest would follow.
you know, my father told me it would be difficut for me to work and study at the same time. i did not care and did. my sister got inspired. she is doing the same for the last 1.5 years. and do you know all the people at her work place? 3 of them senior both in age and designation took admission in unis for masters. they told her they were inspired by her motivation. you know, this is what we need. not only education but WORK.
Re: Nationalism on Independence Day
well there are some pakistanies who i would rather they dont go around telling everyone they are pakistani.
so im not sure if this is necessarily all that bad. in anycase i want to wish you all a happy pakistan independence day.
PAKISTAN ZINDABAD...
Re: Nationalism on Independence Day
Profound. claps
Re: Nationalism on Independence Day
Maybe they just dont care for all the big celebrations? I mean I know I just have lunch/dinner or stuff, rarely attend anything big nor do I do anything big to celebrate. Same goes for canada day.
Re: Nationalism on Independence Day
