Naming in Islam

How would you determine what names are islamic and what are not? Why arent David, Joseph said to be Muslim names? Symbolic? Because these names have Arabic conversion to it… Dawood and Yusuf…respectively! If that is the case, does Islamic names have to have an Arabic touch to it, or could be anything?

Re: Naming in Islam

Eman, Yasin, Tehseen, Rida, Dua, Ans, Pakeeza and Noor-Ul-Ain

All these names are Quranic and then can be symbolic of Islam.
There is a trend to name Muslim children after Islamic names, but not necessarily Arabi names. Fatima, Aysha, Ali , Ahmed are both Islamic and Arabic.

As long as kids have proper names and not names that have no meaning.

Re: Naming in Islam

How do you know they are proper names? Again, all the names that you had mentioned are Arabic, or for the most part. Because people do not name their children out of the norm in the circle of their culture, are they considered not proper?

Re: Naming in Islam

as long as they do not have a bad meaning or not distinctively associated with other religions, the names r ok....

if u have a named like joseph or karishna, ppl might be misled into thinking that u r not a muslim hence better to avoid them....
but while i think joseph can be accepted karishna still cannot be cuz its a hindu deity....

Re: Naming in Islam

So it means that Islam allows you to have names like Joseph but the people dont? hhhmmmmm…

Re: Naming in Islam

Pervez, Kashif, Kaiser and Rameez are unequivocally UNISLAMIC names...

And so are any names that attribute divine characteristic/powers to humans...I am sure a certain community would be particularly upset with this...

Re: Naming in Islam

I am confused, DId ALLAH ever say only ARABIC names are permitted? ANd only Arabic to be spoken to be a good Muslim?

Re: Naming in Islam

No you are more then welcome to name yourself Joseph Krishnamurti and sapeak Sanskrit...

Re: Naming in Islam

Pakeeza - Quranic??? Have you ever noticed that there is no letter “pay” in arabic or quran? So there is no word in Quran that starts with “P”.

See this regarding how to name a child in Islam: http://qa.sunnipath.com/issue_view.asp?HD=3&ID=4387&CATE=335

Re: Naming in Islam

This is a good question. I was wondering the same thing. For example if "Yusuf" is the equivalent to "Joseph", then why can't "Joseph" be used?

Personally, I don't think there are restrictions to names, as long as they don't have a bad meaning, or any relation to something unislamic.

Re: Naming in Islam

errr I might sound stupid but what about Natasha?

Re: Naming in Islam

Natasha is a lovely name.

Re: Naming in Islam

The names u guys r talking about r modern, westernized, adopted from the semitic languages (Arabic, Hebrew, Greek). Why do u think christians made yeshua into Jesus, so whenever you say it wouldnt sound jewish, we use only muslim names so no one confuses us for a christian or a jew. Exactly what christians, hindus, and jews do. So whats the problem?
Its also in the hadith, that you should name your children after prophets i.e. musa, isa, ibrahim, muhammad, pbuh on them all, if u dont then they shouldn't have a bad meaning, and they shouldn't be of other religions either.

Re: Naming in Islam

thats the christian equivalent to Yusuf, therefore being unislamic.

Re: Naming in Islam

If one can marry people of the book, then why can’t one have their version of a name?

Re: Naming in Islam

As long as the names dont mean anythig bad its fine I guess. I remember reading this about this one time when the Prophet (SAW) asked a girl to change her name to aisha since her previous name meant "disobedient". IMO this rules pretty fair and square :D Most names dont have any bad meanings anyway.

David and Da'ood are only different ways of saying the same name, hence the same meaning, and therefore both names being ok to use. So are most other 'christian' names.

Im not sure about hindu names since they have kali mata and stuff and you might end up having a name like "sun-worshipper" which is fine by the hindu faith but considered wrong in Islam.

Re: Naming in Islam

if u want to name ur kids with christian names go ahead, im not stopping u

Re: Naming in Islam

The names refer to the same prophets, so how is that wrong? I’ve seen very religious converts, who have kept their names after converting. I don’t see anything wrong with that.

Re: Naming in Islam

I guess...it's mostly identity politics.

I mean, if you're name is Yacoub and someone calls you Jacob, it's hardly the same as someone calling you "Al" when your name is Ali.
