I have seen people call names to people belonging to other ethnicities like akhrot/naswar(to Pashtuns), matarwa/bhayya to Urdu speaking. I personally find these stereotypical remarks as distasteful and offensive. I wonder when we will learn to live with others respectfully.
Re: Name calling
Calling someone banya or akhrot is even better than calling Someone kaanaa, laangra.
It's very rude and sad. if Allah SWT has made us better than others that doesn't mean we should make fun of others.
Re: Name calling
^ agreed...
Re: Name calling
Its all about biases based on superiority complex based on your race, nation. Generalisation also play its part to it. Many people call Pathans Akhrot based on the general perception about their backwardness in education, etc, which is factually wrong. I know many brilliant Pathan students and people in other fields for whom Pathans can be proud of :k:
Re: Name calling
^ I think we should condemn this attitude on our levels, as stereotyping a whole ethnicity is wrong. There are all sort of people in every ethnicity, yes I agree with you as I have studied with a lot of Pashtuns and worked with them, they were quite intelligent and hardworking. IMO if we can't help it then we shouldn't complain when the Americans equate Muslims with terrorists.
Re: Name calling
Remind me of this.
Re: Name calling
But without name calling there will be no mazaa left. In India we even have slang based upon religion:D

There are also slangs for sects in Pakistan. Khatmal, totay to name few. But again, this only show hatred for others due to superiority complex.

According to delhi standard, these are general words and dobn't qualify for slang, we have better words for others:D
Re: Name calling
but sometimes these name calling lead to big riots. You know sense of humor of common people in our areas.
Re: Name calling
of course it may leave to riot and in my Jatland people don’t have sense let alone sense of humour:D
Re: Name calling
there is a tendency in people to create jokes about Pathans and Memons in Pakistan. One of my friend came from an area, which was badly affected by Dakus in late 80s and early 90s. When he told that he was from that area, people used to say ‘wohi daku wala ilaqa’. Once a friend from Karachi asked him ’ tumhare ilaqe ki specialty to Daku hain’ and in reply he said ’ Boriyon se lashen to Karachi se milti hai’. ![]()
Re: Name calling
^ lasho ka mubla bhi hota hai? ![]()
And you have no idea whenever I tell someone im Sindhi, what I have had hear after this ![]()
Re: Name calling
I can understand you. I experienced this. Sa’ain (which is a respected word in Sindhi we use for Allah Sain, Baba Sain) is used as a derogatory terms when you interact with other communities. For them Sa’in is someone stupid and with low IQ ![]()

Who are khatmals? Yeah I know the green totay :D
Re: Name calling
This one is still cute though.
But people ask something like wadera system, jageerdar system, people think it’s norm in Sindhi culture to have more than one wife, I always feel uncomfortable with these questions.
Re: Name calling

Ali don't ask this specifically. This will lead us no where. People coined these terms considering the colors of clothes, etc of sects
