What goes through your mind when you read Namaz?
I call it the 'Third Entity Ignorance'...It means, what I do is, that when I perform the Namaz, my first focus is to perform Namaz outstandingly...Perfect form and posture and block out EVERYTHING...Anything that is related to this world like bills, studies, friends, plans, outside disturbances e.t.c., ignore everything that falls upon my ear or comes within range of sight...When I have taken a couple of seconds to block the outside world, I start the Namaz...Take even small precautions like the sleeves being rolled down and pants cuffed above the ankles, and after checking everything, put my face in the dirt in humility...this 'cocooning' for me at least is quite addictive and intoxicating...After Namaz, I am rather refreshed and my thoughts have all fallen in place again...Alhamdolillah...:)...All of this takes no more than 3 seconds...
all the days problems...
i need to know how to not think about all those during namaz... its really bad :(

Yeah, that's what I try to do also, and I'm quite successful most of the time, but sometimes my mind wanders and I think about regular things.
what i sometimes do is.... think loudly in my head.. as in say namaz slowly.. and loudly in my head... that helps..
but im gonna try what u said...
i usually think of the surah which i'm going to read ..............apart from that concentrating on the namaz actually.
just concentrate on the meaning on the surah that you're reciting...that will keep your mind from wandering off....
in past i had a really bad problem of thinking all other stuff during namaz
but now ...Alhamdulillah its not a problem any more
i focus my mind on what i'm reciting ....i.e. i concentrate on translation n so i know what i'm saying :)
always trying to understand the meanings of what i'm reciting.. where it fits into the bigger picture and any possible other meanings i may have overlooked...
Does Islam say anything specifically with regards to what we should be thinking about during Namaz?
you beleive in “namaz” ?? Do you also beleive in “facing Kaaba” while offering “namaz” ? etc?
you’re right.. i don’t believe in ‘Namaz’.. that’s too Persian for my taste.. However I do believe in keeping up my Salaat.. and yes you’re right again.. I don’t think I need to physically ‘face’ ka’aba.. well come to think of it, the earth being spherical, i think i’m always kinda ‘facing’ ka’ba the way lamestream opinions ordain.

Islam states that when we pray we should pray as if it is our last prayer,
that is the key to developing khushoo.
from Anas (RA) who said that Allah's messenger (PBUH) said that
"remember death in your prayers since if a person remembers death in his prayer he will be likely to pray well. Pray the prayer of a man who does not think he will pray another Prayer besides it, and beware of every matter which requires excuse".
so death will cause a muslim to perfect his/her prayer as death causes fear. It is the prayer for one saying farewell to this world.
It has also been stated that one should reflect on the words one says in the prayer, as guppies have already mentioned:)

Well, I meant "Salaat" (but used word "namaz" as used in title). Do you pray "salaat" as other Muslims? or are there differences?
Lots of things go through my mind when I actually do get up and pray. Need to work on this along with actually getting to say namaaz.
I think thats one of the reasons that we are supposed to make our namaz slightly audible so that we can focus on what we are saying in the mind and with our ears.

Tapping the finger and crossing the chest...That's too Arabic for my taste...:)
nice thread.
i get these wonderful ideas when i stand for salat, but they are gone the moment i finish my prayers. i see clear solutions to my problem not just everyday problems, im talking about accounting problems, yeah, i figure them out in my salat, but as soon as i finish praying... booom all those ideas vanish! they are gone! i try to recall but to no avail, i wish i had written em down while i was praying...
well, i try not to think of worldly matters during my prayer, but they seem to flock my mind the very moment i say takbeer.
i agree with Pakistani abroad, try to concentrate on the meanings of the surah and it will make a big difference, i did that and it seemed to work.
for this very reason i opened a thread in general asking if people read Quran everyday and try to comprehend its verses or recite it like a parrot with not knowledge as to what they are reciting.
The best way to concentrate is to know the meaning of what you are reciting. That way you start to think about Allah SWT.
I too have sometimes difficulty in concentrating and tend to read it faster.
