NAB to resume corruption case against Nawaz Sharif

A rather shameless use of the state machinery by Zardari to punish Sharif for turning against him. Looks like the PPP is sliding back into its habits from the Bhutto years (both Bhuttos) and is using Pakistan to pressure its enemies…

Pakistani prosecutors today said they would press ahead with corruption charges against Nawaz Sharif, the former prime minister, who recently broke with the ruling coalition.

Zulfiqar Ahmed Bhutta, a leading prosecutor with the national accountability bureau, confirmed it moved late last month to challenge a court decision to indefinitely adjourn charges against Sharif, the leader of the Pakistan Muslim League-N.

The accusations against Sharif include money laundering, loan defaults and the accumulation of wealth beyond his known sources of income. Sharif’s lawyer, Khwaja Haris, said the charges were politically motivated.

“It appears to be aimed at using the accountability courts against Nawaz Sharif,” Haris said. “It appears to be used for political ends.”

Gota love democracy!!!

one night stand between ppp and nawaz is over, and back to business of crooks, one takes charge and other get the beating on all fronts. and this goes on. both of them dont care about Pakistan or pakistanis.

Its funny how political actions in Pakistan seems to relate to indian movies in mid 90's.

Go Nawaaz I say - like they say, lesser evil is always better then bigger evil.

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani on Thursday said that government does not believe in political victimization and no case is being pursued against Nawaz Sharif or any other leader.

Giving a policy statement on the floor of the National Assembly, the Prime Minister said that NAB has requested a link court for re-opening of cases on which it has no jurisdiction for proceedings.

He categorically stated that no case is being pursued against the PML (N) leaders.

The Prime Minister said that the federal government has established a cabinet committee to repeal the NAB ordinance, which at present could not be done as it had the protection of the 6th schedule of the Constitution.

These cases, he added, would be dealt by the ordinary courts under the supervision of High Courts. He said fresh legislation will be brought in the house for ensuring transparent and across the board accountability.

Welcoming the prime minister’s statement, PML-N Secretary Information Ahsan Iqbal said there is no difference in NAB or PCO judges till the restoration of deposed judges.

He said oath of new president, it taken from PCO judge, would also be doubtful and asked the government to restore judiciary to its pre-November 3 position.
