By-poll candidates warned against code violation
RAWALPINDI: As the countdown for February 24 by-election in NA-55 has begun, the contesting candidates are exploiting all avenues to win the important seat.
Though various political parties have fielded their candidates for the seat, a tough competition is expected between PML-N and Sheikh Rashid.
NA-55 was the seat of PML-N, which fell vacant following the resignation of former MNA Haji Pervez Khan after the examination scandal.
Political observers believe that the examination scandal of former MNA Haji Pervez caused embarrassment to PML-N and party supporters in Rawalpindi.
On the other hand, the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) that had scored maximum number of votes after PML-N in the 2008 general election, is not taking part in the by-election and so far the PML-N has not succeeded in getting support from the party’s local chapter.
Sheikh Rashid is believed to have succeeded in getting covert support from PPP leadership—a deal already denounced by Opposition Leader in National Assembly and PML-N stalwart Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan.
That is why the PML-N is aggressively pursuing its election campaign in the city after losing support from PPP at a time when the Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) and Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaaf (PTI) that had boycotted general election, are also in the field.
A number of constituents in NA-55 interviewed by Dawn said that a neck and neck competition was expected between PML-N and Sheikh Rashid. However, nobody was sure as to who is going to win the seat.
While Sheikh Rashid trumpets the uplift projects in Rawalpindi, the PML-N’s candidate Shakil Awan and other leaders accuse him of changing political loyalties and siding with the killers of Lal Masjid.
The PTI has already started membership drive in Rawalpindi city and the JI’s Dr Kamal and other party leaders are trying to win people’s support through anti-US speeches and slogans and criticising the incumbent rulers for taking dictation from the US.
Former JI leader and MNA Mohammed Hanif Abbasi has been made as election in-charge by PML-N in a bid to win the support of his JI’s voters after PTI’s candidate for the by-election Ijaz Khan Jazi quit PML-N along with his supporters.
The city roads have been flooded with massive display of campaign posters and banners which indicate the intensity of election fever prevailing in the populous Rawalpindi city.

LAHORE: Senator Pervez Rasheed has said that Nawaz Sharif has not yet made up his mind about whether to run for NA-123.
After the meeting held in connection with the preparations for the poll, Pervez Rasheed said the deadline for withdrawal of nomination papers is still far and that it is the desire of Nawaz Sharif to give election ticket to those party workers who have rendered sacrifices.
He said consultation was held during the meeting on allowing other party worker to contest the poll in case of Nawaz Sharif’s staying out of the election.

The Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) candidate Shakil Awan contesting NA-55 by-elections has included many development schemes in his plan for implementation in the constituency after being elected.
Shakil Awan having an edge over his opponents including Sheikh Rashid Ahmed of Awami Muslim League and Dr Mohammad Kamal of Jamaat-e-Islami unveiled his manifesto. Shakil while talking to ‘The News’ stated that he would propose to the Punjab chief minister a special package worth Rs5 billion for his constituency for education sector, traffic projects, improvement and flood control plan of Nullah Leh, health sector and recreational facilities.
After getting approved the special development package from the Punjab government, Shakil vowed to enforce all his planned schemes within two years time. He informed that he has decided to open six new colleges for boys at degree level in different parts of Rawalpindi. The male students are facing too much problems in getting admissions in existing colleges. Construction of over 16 overhead bridges at Murreee Road is also included in the plan.
The people of Rawalpindi are facing residential problem because of non-availability of accommodation and their poor financial problems. To tackle the issue, a plan has been conceived to launch a Nawaz Sharif Housing Sector for poor and low income people. This housing scheme would be established in adjacent area of Rawalpindi and the plan would not turn into another fraud like the Lohi Bher Housing project announced by the previous government when Sheikh Rashid was acting as railway minister.
Shakil Awan vowed to implement the project of Nullah Leh and Flood Control Plan which was announced and inaugurated during the previous government. For the promotion of health sector, a new model hospital would be opened for women and children in Rawalpindi.
Shakil Awan told that immediately after bye-elections and his election as MNA, the Punjab chief minister would announce a special development package worth Rs5 billion for NA-55.
To a question about the margin of votes he hopes to get in the elections , Shakil predicted to bag over one lakh votes. While his opponents particularly Sheikh Rashid would not be able to cross even the double figure. Sheikh would get less than ten thousand votes in the bye polls. After announcement of elections date, Sheikh Rashid has become a brain dead person hanging in the ventilator of Awami League . This ventalitor would open after the result of bye polls and the role of Sheikh Rashid would finish for ever in Pindi politics.
He refused to comment over his other opponent candidates particularly, Dr.Mohammad Kamal of JI . However, he stated that Dr.Kamal is not in a position to bring out any surprise result in his favour.

LAHORE: The Punjab Election Commission, releasing the final list of candidates contesting by-election in NA-55, allotted them election symbols.
The polling will be held on Feb 24 in this constituency.
According to the election commission, 25 candidates will contest in NA-55 Rawalpindi.
PML-N candidate was allotted lion while Awami Muslim League candidate was allotted with ‘Kalam dawat’ symbol.
Apart from PML-N and AML, no other major party has fielded its candidate here.

RAWALPINDI: Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) on Sunday accused the provincial government of misusing state machinery and official resources to ensure victory of the PML-N’s candidate in the NA-55 by-election slated for February 24. JI Punjab Amir Wasim Akhtar told a news conference that provincial Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif claimed to be striving for good governance but his government’s machinery and resources were being openly used by his party in the NA-55 constituency during its candidate Shakeel Awan’s election campaign. He accused Shakeel Awan and Awami Muslim League’s (AML) candidate Sheikh Rashid Ahmed of violating the Election Commission (EC) rules by lavishly spending money on their election campaigns. He said the EC rules stopped a candidate from spending more than Rs 0.8 million on electioneering but such rules were being flouted by the PML-N and AML candidates without let or hindrance. He demanded that the EC take notice of the matter without delay. Akhtar appealed to the NA-55 voters to vote for JI candidate Dr Kamal, saying his is the only political party, which could steer the court out of current crises.

Ijaz Khan Jazi has bright chances to win in view of the fact that I.K personally involving in his campaign. However, we should not underestimate Sheikh Rahsid. The true contest will between the three PML-N, SS and PTI. To bag 100000 votes is not realistic. I think winning candidate will not get more than 40000 votes.

as much as i support imran khan, hes fielded the wrong person for this seat in na-55... he gave the ticket to some ex-pml[n] guy who was refused a ticket by nawaz sharif earlier in the 2008 elections...
i really hope shiekh rashid is telling the truth when he says he repents supporting musharraf and the whole lal masjid fiasco that he supported back then... if he isnt sheeda talli anymore and is being honest; based on his stance i'd vote for him... pml[n] doesnt deserve this vote because they're being a very friendly opposition to zardari right now.

There was another Rasheed Sheikh who was the most popular student leader and played a big role against Ayoub Khan's dictatorship, Than his father shifted him to Peshawar so this Sheikh Rasheed came on seen, This was from a poor family but worked hard. Thank you for giving me a chance to remind some names.Abdul Hameed was first student of Polytechnic Institute Rawalpindi who died in that movement. (He belonged to Pindi Ghep) Second was Zaheer Naqvi who was a student at Noshehrah and died there,HE was from Attock. One name who only few know was a student leader from Karachi Sharyar Mirza who was than released from Attock jail. (Arrested from Karachi) He organized NSF (National Students Federation) that time in Punjab and NWFP which played a vital role in movement against Ayoub Khan and 1970 elections.

Benazir political career depends on Swiss Court ruling: Rashid

RAWALPINDI: Federal Minister for Information Sheikh Rashid Ahmed reiterated on Monday that the political career of former prime minister Benazir Bhutto very much relies on the ruling of Swiss Court, which will be like an �Oxygen Tent� for PPPP chairperson .
Talking to newsmen after addressing a meeting of local Nazims at famous Lal Haveli, Sheikh Rashid said that there is no impediment on return of Benazir Bhutto to Pakistan, however she will have to face the court at every cost.
Sheikh Rashid said that ruling of Swiss court will be like an oxygen tent for Benazir�s political career, as her career could end in no time if court punishes her as it will seal her political career and if the case is not so then she could play an active part in Pakistani politics.
And in case she is punished by Swiss court, PPP-P leadership will have to announce new leadership, information added.
If I look at the political scenario of Pakistan at the moment I can�t see Benazir�s role any more in Pakistan, he added.
He also made it clear government has not put a proposal for taking back corruption cases against Benazir Bhutto, when government had not withdrawn cases against federal minister then how could PPP-P imagine that its leader will be spared.
On another query regarding Benazir taking part in 2007 general elections, Sheikh Rashid said her future very much depends on the verdict of Swiss court.
He also said that her (Benazir�s) case is opposite of Nawaz Sharif�s case, as it is up to British government to issue him a visa, we were only bound to issue his passport, which we did.
On a query about the uniform issue, he said President Musharraf is a sincere and honest man and with his positive thinking he can take his decision over the matter by remaining within in the stipulations of the constitution.
Sheikh Rashid Ahmed also dispelled Indian allegation that Indian driver killed by Taliban in Afghanistan last week was on instigation of Pakistan making it clear there is no truth in Indian allegation.
“We are passing through a critical stage and our relations with India are improving, in these circumstances, Pakistan can�t even think to instigate such an act,” he maintained.
Earlier, addressing the Nazims meeting, he said with the help of Asian Development Bank roads on both sides of Nullah Lai will be repaired and a Super Highway from Chandni Chowk to Marrir Hassan Chowk will also be built to facilitate frequent travelers from Islamabad to Rawalpindi.
We want to create a history this year by making Rawalpindi a model city and in this plan roads alongside Nullah Lai and a non stop highway from Saddar Rawalpindi to Islamabad will also be built.
Sheikh Rashid also said that a six member team headed by Town and District Nazim will take decision about the Naib Nazim Rawal Town.
He also said that keeping in view safety measures in backdrop of October 8 killer earthquake, government has decided to built quake-proof hospital and a residential colony at place of TB Hospital. NESPAK has changed the design and it will be the first earthquake proof building in Rawalpindi.

To the agony of diehard PPP workers and to the surprise of the rest, president of Pakistan and the co-chairman of Pakistan Peoples’ Party Asif Ali Zardari invited Sheikh Rashid Ahmad, the head of Awami Muslim League to the dinner in Aiwan-e-Sadr. In this meeting, Zardari first offered Sheikh Rashid to join PPP and then a senate seat. In exchange of these, Zardari asked Sheikh Rashid just to lambast at Nawaz Sharif as bitterly as possible.
Sheikh Rashid is the discarded entity, thoroughly and disgustingly rejected by two constituencies in the Rawalpindi on 18th February by the candidate of Nawaz Sharif’s PML(N). His election deposit was even confiscated and he was not even able to roam the streets of Rawalpindi as people were really angry with him, because he remained arrogant, over-confident, proud, disloyal and liar after winning the elections. People punished him for supporting Musharraf, defecting from Nawaz Sharif, remaining aloof and arrogant to the problems of the people.
For the PPP workers, the meeting of Sheikh Rashid with Zardari came as a bomb. Sheikh Rashid during late eighties and nineties always attacked the personality of late Benazir Bhutto with very cheap remarks and personal attacks. Once he said about Benazir that “When looked from back, she looks like Pervaiz (implying a boy), and when looked from front, she looked like Perveen (implying a girl)”. His speeches were always full of such nasty and dirty personal attacks. Once Benazir Bhutto became so furious that she incarcerated him in jail.
And now same Sheikh Rashid has met with Zardari over a cordial dinner. Does Zardari really cares for the name, dignity and reputation of Benazir Bhutto? Does the man really care about his wife at all?

This was a widely reported meeting, No secret meetings like PML N leaders late night and secret. They are even cheating with nation and N$ too.
