The election campaign for a by-poll to a key electoral constituency of Pakistan’s National Assembly is heating up with the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) declaring 36 out of 250 polling stations in the constituency NA-55 in Rawalpindi sensitive.
Sources at the ECP said yesterday several incidents of disturbance had already been seen at these polling stations.

LAHORE: An Election Tribunal of the Lahore High Court rejected on Tuesday a petition challenging the electoral eligibility of Pakistan Muslim League-N chief Mian Nawaz Sharif.
The tribunal dismissed the plea and declared Nawaz as eligible to contest election.
The tribunal comprised of Justice Chaudhry Iftikhiar Hussain, Justice Sheikh Azmat Saeed and Justice Nasir.
The petitioner, Shahid Orakzai, insisted that Nawaz Sharif was defaulter and was accused of attacking the Supreme Court.
On the other hand, defense lawyer argued that Nawaz Sahrif was not involved in any attack on the apex court.

LAHORE: Pakistan Muslim League – Nawaz’s chief Nawaz Sharif withdrew his nomination papers to contest the NA-123 by-elections, clearing the way for his party’s candidate Malik Pervez.
Nawaz’s withdrawal of his nomination papers comes after the PML-N decided to award the party ticket to Malik Pervez.
Malik Pervez is the brother of Pakistan’s former Attorney-General Malik Qayyum.
Meanwhile, Nawaz Sharif is also facing a case in the Lahore High Court, which is challenging the PML-N chief’s eligibility to contest the upcoming by-election.
Earlier, the Punjab government had asked the Election Commission to postpone the by-polls due to security reasons. The polls were subsequently postponed and are now scheduled to be held on March 10.
I Have heard that a sister of Pervez is MNA from PPP. Do you remember Tapes of Justice Qayoum while he was a judge . I have read them in ‘Jang’. Ohh what a great candidate by N$. They may be in touch since his brother was a judge.

**RAWALPINDI: A joint team investigating the recent attack on former federal minister and Awami Muslim League chief Sheikh Rashid Ahmed is reported to have grilled two of the suspects being tried in the Benazir Bhutto assassination case in Adiala jail.

The team, headed by DIG (Investigation) of Punjab Hamid Mukhtar Gondle, is likely to submit an initial report to the provincial government in two days.
A source told Dawn that the investigation team, which had quizzed Hasnain Gul and Rafaqat Hussain for more than one and half hours, however, failed to get any information that could lead to the arrest of the attackers.
According to him, the accused told the investigators that their group had never missed targets in the past and always struck successfully, unlike the failed attempt on Sheikh Rashid’s life.
According to the source, the militants, however, said that before their arrest they had helped a militant, identified as Shahid, to carry out a suicide attack on Sheikh Rashid’s Lal Havaili, but he failed to do so and later blew himself up outside a golf club on Jhelum Road.
They told the investigators that Shahid had also made an attempt to kill Sheikh Rashid during a rally in 2005.

RAWALPINDI: The Lahore High Court (LHC) Rawalpindi bench on Tuesday served notices on Ministry of Defence, Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) and the provincial chief secretary on an application of Awami Muslim League chief Sheikh Rashid Ahmed.
In his application Ahmad requested the court that that the by-election in NA-55 constituency should be held under army.
LHC Judge Justice Asad Munir has served notices on the respondents and has sought replies from on February 18.
Unknown gunmen had attacked Ahmed at his Khayaban-e-Sir Syed election office a week ago.

ISLAMABAD: Red Mosque cleric Maulana Abdul Aziz said Thursday that he had not backed any candidate for by-election in NA-55 constituency of Rawalpindi.
In a statement issued by Lal Masjid today, Aziz said that political parties should refrain from using name of Lal Masjid to secure votes.
He said that Awami Muslim League chief Sheikh Rashid had registered a false case against his younger brother Maulana Abdul Rashid Ghazi in 2004 and remained tightlipped during Lal Masjid operation.
Nawaz Sharif had also called an all parties conference (APC) in London during the operation, he said, adding that PML-N used Red Mosque’s name during last general election, but later took no step in this regard.
He said that political leaders should not make use Lal Masjid’s name for their political motives.

Jang poll: PML-N Awan leads in NA-55 by-election
ISLAMABAD: The Jang Group has released the results of its public opinion poll conducted in NA-55 about by-election.
**PML-N candidate Shakil Awan is leading the table followed by AML chief Sheikh Rashid, according to the poll. **
Before the start of polling in NA-55, Jang, The News and Geo News conducted a survey, according to which Shakil Awan got fist position by securing 42.51% people, while Sheikh Rashid has the backing of 38.04% people.
In addition, Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf candidate Ejaz Khan is at third place with 3.75% support.
A total of 31720 forms were distributed among people, out of which 26100 forms were filled accurately.
