We have crime here ,particularly in Makkah ,Jeddah & Madinah region ,But its not as much compared to other countries.

i didn't mean that Saudi is a tribal like FATA. they are tribal in mentality and nature. For example the current ruling family belongs to Al-saud tribe with hundreds of thousand members all over Saudi. then there are Tameem, Otaibah & Shammar. Yaam which are mostly located in Najran area. Harbs which are the biggest in the Medinah and surroundings.

Urbanization is over 85% thats why everything looked to us like not tribal, but the ruling elite and the very fabric of saudi society knitted together with tribes and house of al-saud have marital ties with nearly all the powerful tribes.

french/italian drink more… russians are famous for drinking, i think average is over the top in the world for them. still they are not happy.

I grew up in Saudi Arabia and one thing i noticed was that the government and elite have restricted common citizens alot. But stil, people are in better condition there. But as increasing unrest in Bahrain..Saudi elite is increasingly concern about serious unrest in their country. And as firenze suggested..Muslims in general are in favour of peaceful saudia because of holy lands of Makkah and Medina. Talking about Makkah and Medina..i miss it alot!!

Well for one thing … Saudi’s population density is far lower than the surrounding countries …

all countries of the world listed by lowest population density

There is arguably less cause for unrest when the population density is so low … Also, the media is under tight control in Saudi … and any whisper is shut down quickly … The Western media is also not that interested in kicking up a fuss about Saudi due to oil arrangements that are working for them.

So I would say the truth of the matter lies somewhere in between .. it is wrong to say Saudi is necessarily so peaceful based on what we hear but at the same time it makes sense that a place like Saudi with a sparse population density and house to the two major holy cities of Islam makes it a prime candidate for being on ones best behaviour.

^Yap psyah got it right. The media is very tight and very tight security when comes down to internal security. I mean saudi Government is corrupt as well in their own way which Allah knows best. But life is much or less peaceful. Besides..i wouldn't want to live in Saudia anyway.

N.korea is also very peaceful as we dont hear news of crime from n.korea!
I heard that there is not a single HIV patient in n.Korea.
They are a peaceful society.
Though they have extreme poverty for last 50years at least!
As far as ksa is concerned they have a good life so they dont want loose that life by offending the authorities.

Unlike all those surrounding countries that you named, Saudi Arabia has a lot of money that it can spend on stability.

In general, wealthy countries are stable. It is a fallacy that people want democracy, in truth they want comfort and in the absence of comfort then they want a say in how their lives are run.

the government is considerate about their own people ,so why would the people hate it?

did u know that according to a new law passed by ministry,they are thinking of cutting down expat IT personnel?
companies are asked to have certain percent of Saudis employed
free scholarships to them any time.
government hospitals dont charge saudis a dime (i guess?) not sure about this.
Speaking of schools, schools are being told to give a min of 5K salary while any expats are getting 3.5K max.
did u also know that bakery shops are asked to sell roti for 1 buck because government supplies atta to them. What i am saying even when most retailers are earning with other food products because of inflation, bakery shops cant raise the price.
when the king recovered most government institution employees were given bonus. When my president recovered i was given poo.

and you know when the political uprising was at hype. You could not stand in group of 3 saying bull about the king or you go to the jail.:hmmm: well make anything out of it.

So u see , why would u hate the king when he takes your side.

Yet, it's taboo for women to drive in that society?

To me it's like one person gets to say yes or no on things which progress a society. Sorry King Abdullah, not a big fan!
