i scanned my computer last night with an antivirus, and now no pictures are opening on my computer. when i click on the picture windows fax viewer opens and says “no preview available”. i tried opening the pictures with paint but that didn’t work either. what do i do?! i have way too many pictures that i cannot afford to loose!

first thing first .. do a backup of all your pics on a DVD rom .. and then investigate.

i'm not the most computer savvy person. i've heard of system restore but i don't know how to do it, how long it takes or anything about it. if someone can help me with that, i'll be willing to give it a try

Its definitly worth a try and if it does create problems, you can unrestore(!) it back to the original state.
If you’re using XP http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/systemrestore.mspx
If you’re using vista, go in control panel -classic view and click on ‘backup and restore cente’ and follow the instructions.

off topic but 10 GB worth of pictures require some serious backup .. what if your hard disk failed or you accidentally reformat your whole disk (I lost 3 years worth of pics cause I did that by accident :D)
Buy an external hard drive and backup your pics.

okay i just tried system restore but the only restore point available is todays! and that's not going to help my picture problem..what do i do?!

What extension are they in like tiff, jpeg, gif or any other? Make sure their file type is not changed somehow.

they're all jpegs..they didn't change..i just can't view them

erm tried most avenues..only thing I can suggest to you is you try out some data recovery software which might help. I havnt used any so cant recommend.
