My official stance on burqas

Re: My official stance on burqas

cat-woman - I agree with your argument mostly, when made from free choice it is an expression of the committment one has with their God. Good for them.

I don't however believe that a woman in an area where most women wear a burqa would have the choice to take one off as easily as the choice is there to put one on. You could wear a burqa here or a hijab here and it's cool. Some stares because it's not expected but no one attacks you. In areas where women uniformly wear burqa because it is a cultural norm, how can you define that as free choice. Hypothetically, what happens if one decides not to wear one and thinks a hijab is good enough?

That is the measure of free choice, not that they all opt to wear one, but if they have the option not to.

Re: My official stance on burqas

roman, i know that .....!!
tell me one thing ....how can you represent a case on behalf of burqa wearing ladies while neither u wear one nor you r a lady .....i'm here myself n i'm telling you leave 'us' alone , please!!!!!!!!!

(did i say 'me' ...???no i said 'us'....got it!!)

Re: My official stance on burqas

Minah do you wear a burqa/chaadar when you go to your hubbys village?

Re: My official stance on burqas

Afia - he is wrong in attacking all burqa clad women as being a product of a repressive society. You made your choice and are happy with it, no one is arguing that.

Re: My official stance on burqas

FF - I have never been there and will never go unfortunately, my fear of planes would keep me here. If I did, I would cover my head out of respect, but that has nothing to do with my argument here.

Re: My official stance on burqas

Afia, why, the 'us' are not humans? When I see other humans suppressed I raise my voice (in free time, of course).

It is a very sexist thing to say kay only women can speak for themselves and men can speak for themselves. We should consider this a 'human condition' not a womanly issue.

Re: My official stance on burqas

Roman pray tell us why your official stance should matter to women who wish to cover up because they are oh so happy doing so. I say you should go back to grade school.

Afia bajee— dont mind him. Its ignorance at its best :flower1:

Re: My official stance on burqas

Oh and btw, I've seen scarf wearing women in clubs (yes, believe you me). They don't look repressed, they only look weird. Big difference. Looking weird is OK.

Re: My official stance on burqas

MQ, I didn't say it should or should not. I'm simply raising my voice to the vices.

Re: My official stance on burqas

It’s the respect for cultural and religious norms. I go out wearing jeans and a t-shirt over here, but if I go to Pakistan I’d feel more comfortable in a shalwaar kameez. Noones asking you to live in a country where burqas are commonly worn - thats a choice too.

Re: My official stance on burqas

Yeah Catty, some people wont mind doing nothing about the apartheid either. What’s wrong is wrong.

Re: My official stance on burqas

Roman, why dont you take off your panties as well. I think wearing panties is a sign of repression, opression and suppression. Do the rockaway and lean back, lean back, lean back.

Re: My official stance on burqas

And who made you the spokesman for women who dress modestly, be it burqa or hijab? Its vices? What you have is a personal view - a very ignorant one sided personal view. Its summer, write personal views about how naked women around town bug you

Re: My official stance on burqas

Cat, that completely does not apply. You'd get lashed if you won't wear burqa in saudi arabia. Go figure.

Re: My official stance on burqas

Cat-woman - it is a choice for you, I understand that. How much of a choice is it for the women there? Again, I am not attacking all people who wear burqa at all. Just pointing out that if wearing a burqa is a cultural and societal norm, the choice is no longer there.

Re: My official stance on burqas

minah …i think i understand your point,…but this type of pressure (societal pressure ) is not unique to only burqa people …every society does have some sort of pressure on individuals …look at the other side of picture …there Are a lot of women in west who are willing to take hijab ,for example, but they don’t…!! in many cases they think if they will practice it they will stick out as a sour thumb…!!

it is actually the wrong assumption about us …almost 99% of times when ppl see a burqa women in west …they automatically assume she’s oppressed …!!

Re: My official stance on burqas

Roman some may wear it by force but not all of them. Don't generalise.

Re: My official stance on burqas

roman, someone will spit at you if you DO wear it in europe …go figure…!!

Re: My official stance on burqas

I know cultural pressure is a constant in all societies and you are right, most would assume she was oppressed, Afia. I guess I would assume the same if talking about burqa in areas where there is no other option simply because there is no choice. My daughter wears a hijab and nothing if ever is said about it where we are in PA. Most people just ask if she is Muslim and leave it at that.

EDIT: Afia, I'm shocked at that, no one should spit on you because of that, especially if they think you are an object of oppression. Or is it the general bias against Muslims?

Re: My official stance on burqas

Afia, is that spitting sanctioned by the state?
