My life as a new Muslim

I am Fathima Liebenberg, a white Muslim woman converted to Islam in 1995. I am very proud to say that I am a Muslim, but if it was not for my son, I would never have been a Muslim. For me, it was a hard and long struggle, because it cost me my job, friends and family.

I was a very pious Christian who went to the Pentecostal churches. I used to collect the street children and take them to the church and Sunday school. My life consisted only of reading and studying the bible, until my son told me about Islam.

My son came home one day and said to me, Mummy! Why don’t you become a Muslim?" I was shocked at the very idea and said, Never." He said, Mummy! Islam is such a pure and clean religion, they pray five times a day."

Re: My life as a new Muslim

and ur point is ?

I am sure there are better reasons to become a Muslim than the fact that "they pray 5 times a day".

Re: My life as a new Muslim

hina_khan, are you Fathima Liebenberg or are you just sharing a converted muslim's life story?

Wonderful story though. I tell you, some converts are amazing. Personally I know quite a few converts who are setting such a wonderful example for the community. Their enthusiasm, quest for knowledge, practical application, charity, service is just wonderful.

Let's use this thread to share stories of how converts you know have adpated to the muslim culture.

Maybe what he was trying to say is that muslims are disciplined in that they have a set schedule to pray...but yes, you are right that there are indeed many reasons to consider Islam as our religion.

I would say that the oneness of Allah is a very logical concept. And there are many other things as well.

The discipline part is something that I admire about Islam :)

However, the connection between "pure & clean religion" and "they pray 5 times a day" sounded too trivial a reason to change one's religious beliefs.

Re: My life as a new Muslim

Thanks Punjabee.
Yes I suppose that was just the beginning of a deeper message that followed. You’re right that of a non muslim hears about praying 5 times a day, they may get scared actually :hmmm:

Re: My life as a new Muslim

Umm ... and the other Christians did not form a mob and behead the apostate??

What is this thing about christ and his message???? Why does he wish well for even those who betray him?

A lot of people experiment with multiple religions & sub religions. I think its a great idea for everyone to experience as many religions as they wish for a trivial or significant reasons.

Re: My life as a new Muslim

a very cheap shot at advertisement....

Peace Punjabee in USA

I have not followed up the link but to people who have concluded that our prupose can best be understood as people made to worship God then for such people the sound of the many prayers we do as duty and many others we do out of choice makes Islam look like such a religion geared towards that better purpose.

Peace wiseguyin

Yes, you are right the majority of converts to Islam are actually from the Christian people a reason may be because the Christians are sincere and genuine as a people, it is something that everyone could follow is their example of good conduct.

Also you will find that it is not the yahoos of the Christian people who become Muslim, rather it is their best and often most pious people which is good for Islam because they often become pillars and leaders for us as well. In time you will probably see Muslims with the characteristics of Christians but maintain the purity of Islamic belief.

You see I praise the people for this, not Christ.
