hahaha I did calculate the cat's age the other day and she is only 3 which mean she has AT LEAST another 10 years to live!!
I know this sounds like a ridiculous problem but I was honestly wondering how can people be so attached to a freaking cat?! I was thinking maybe some pet lover can respond and make me realize how hard it is to let go of a pet so I can understand where my mom is coming from but it's apparent that she is the one being unreasonable. I am going to have a go at her tonight!
If a cat is at a shelter and doesn't find a home they wouldn't put it to sleep, would they? Might be 'just' a cat but it's still a life..
Agree with Sara.. Surely there must be some compromise or middle-ground..
I've got a dog and being honest I wouldn't get rid of him as I'm too attached and I've seen how stressed he gets at even just being at the kennels when we go away for a week or two (the very first time he was so bad when we took him to the vet on our return she was wanting to put him on a drip).. That bond is something that non-pet owners would not understand imo.. If it was me I'd find a way round the allergy problem.. I don't blame ur mum and sisters for not wanting to get rid of the cat..

I was just kidding , you do not have to have a go at your mom. There is a middle of the ground solution. There must be a pet motel in your neighborhood who can take care of your cat whenever you are visiting your family. I hope your mom can stand a few days of separation from that freaking cat.
My son is allergic to cats , my wife does not like cats either , my daughter would love to have a cat for pet and I would love her to have a cat for pet but I told her since there are these two problems with family members therefore we cannot have a cat in or around the house and she understands and respects it now.

it is too late. i never heard any successful sotry of killing later. :@:
that cat represents YOU to your mom. it will be very difficult for her to give it up.
the only way that I could give up my babies is if I knew that they were going to a loving home.
find one for the cat and convince mom that the cat will be happier there and she will get to see you more as a result.

Story goes like this. It is a Persian folk story.
This guy who's wife was out of his control went to some friend's house and noticed that his wife was very obedient and all caring. So he asked his friend for the secret behind behavior of his wife.
The friend told him when I got married and brought my wife home , we all sat down for breakfast the next morning. A cat came in the room and sat down near the food , I yelled at the cat to get out of the room , when it did not listen to me I took out my sword and cut it off and threw it outside. My wife saw that and never disobeyed me since the day one.
This other guy was impressed went home arranged for a cat to come and sit nearby when they were eating their dinner , this guy repeated the scene and shouted at the cat to get out of the room when the cat did not listen he took out his sword and killed the cat. His wife saw all this and started yelling at him for killing an innocent cat. So moral of story as per story is " gurba kushtan raz a awwal" . Translation: If you want to make an impression and tame your wife kill the cat first day.

Also, they can lock the cat in one room/ area and fully clean the house before he comes?
I have cat allergies and its not that easy. Cleaning up doesnt really do it unless you sanitize the entire house professionally every single week...which usually costs $. My best friend had a cat and even though she got rid of it later on, I still wheeze and itch and cough when I am there.
I guess if the cat prevents your husband from going over there...it might have to go. Is he allergic to birds?
Do you have any family friends who can keep the cat whilst ur husband is visiting your parents?
Yeah I think I am going to them put her at a family friend's whenever we visit. Ideally I really do want them to give it away but my husband is only there on the weekends so this compromise can work for everyone.
Deeba dogs are actually loving and faithful. This used to be MY cat. I brought her, named her and took care of her. She is an adorable ragdoll but cats just don't give you the same love that a dog does so I don't understand how one can be so attached to a cat. And since she was my cat, I get really annoyed when my mom and siblings act all possessive about it when I suggest to give it away.
Or a pet motel. They are dime a dozen in US. It cost 12 to 15 dollars a day. Can your parents afford that ?
I've never heard of pet motels. I'll definitely look into it if putting her at a family friend's doesn't work out. I am sure my mom would be more than happy to pay that instead of giving her away!
Thank you for the suggestions everyone. Again as silly as this problem sounds, it is indeed very real and since I am the one stuck in the middle I really needed some objective advice!

You're so right Reha. Mere vaccuuming and dusting does not take care of car dander. You need to sanitize the house and that's not a feasible option every week.
He is not allergic to birds, dogs etc. Only cats. I think people often don't sympathize with allergies unless they themselves suffer from it. I feel bad because he's my husband but my family thinks the coughing and wheezing are no big deal and are just like some regular cold symptoms. I see how uncomfortable he is once he has such a horrible reaction. If the wheezing starts at night, he is not able to sleep the entire night because he is soo uncomfortable.
I try to be nice ... but some threads are silly and this is one of them ...
It is so easy to sort this issue out. Go to meet parents once a fortnight and when you go get hubby to take the steroid neither the husband takes steroids on a regular basis and the parents can't complain that you do not visit ... and best of all the cat gets to stay.
Even though YOU bought the cat, your mum and siblings have grown to love it, its a life after all, not some inanimate object, it has its own personality and quirks or whatever and people love their pets, so the best compromise would involve the cat staying methinks and maybe getting your family to visit you more often. And as someone some members have already suggested, maybe keep it at a friend's home for the weekend you're there?
Honestly if i had a pet cat, i wouldnt be able to get rid of it just like that. Cats may not be as loyal as dogs but people are always really attached to their pets, no matter what kind of pet they are. also have you tried to explain how badly your hubby suffers to your mum and that he feels hurt and as if the cat is more important to her than him? Might make her more sensitive to his issue with the cat? anyways, good luck!
