My HAIRY child

My younger daughter who is 3 has “roohaan” (hair) on all over her back. I recall some desi “totka” about rubbing kids with atta.

In Pakistan - I recall they use to rub babies with oil and atta.

Before I dump a bag of golden temple - can someone please advise what to do with babies and kids with hair on their bodies.

Re: My HAIRY child

That's a good question. There was this guy I knew who had a baby daughter with a lot of facial/body hair. His friend told me that they actually shaved her body etc.....in their family they do that to girls when a baby. My logic told me oh my god nO!!!! they are setting her up for more hair growth...but I wonder if it actually worked.

I have also heard of using rock salt, but i dont know if that really works. I dont see how atta will make it go away?

Re: My HAIRY child

Afro - new born are ususally are hairy right? What happens. Does the hair dissappear or does it just lighten up?

Re: My HAIRY child

I have heard of the atta thing on infants. No one in my generation that I know does it. And my mother never did it to us. But when I look at the hairless women in my grandmother's generation (women who've had scarce hair all their lives!), I wonder if there's something to it. Age 3 may be too late. It may be better to wait until she's near puberty and wax (my friend's mom had her start waxing at 12; she only has very fine hair now).

Re: My HAIRY child

Hey NJGal,

I have noticed that if you apply a mixture of besan/yogurt/turmeric and let it completely dry on your face…and then when peel it off…you will end up pulling some hairs out. I’ve typically heard of **besan **(aka gram flour/chana flour) being used for hair removal as opposed to aata. Here is what I’ve found from the following website. And I’ve copied/pasted the information from the site below. I hope it helps.

******** Do make sure your daughter is not allergic to the ingredients mentioned before trying out the remedy.

**Hair Removal on a Child **

[ol]
[li]Apply a besan (gram flour, chana flour) haldi - turmeric powder paste. Take 75% besan and 25% haldi. i.e. for 3 tsp of besan mix 1 tsp of haldi. Both the ingredients are available from Indian grocery stores[/li]

.
After sometime when it starts to dry, scrub it off gently. This would gradually reduce body hair over a period of time.
It is not possible to give an exact time for hair to vanish. In some parts of India, this is done for about 1.5 months to new born babies on whole body and they are almost hairless.
[li]Massage the baby with almond oil or any other oil.[/li](Note: You can use besan haldi paste and oil or wheat flour and ghee paste massage for even a new born child for 2-3 months, every alternate day. If the baby has too much hair, they will vanish over a period of time.)
[/ol]

"** One would be to use besan (chick pea flour) and haldi (turmeric). Apply a fine mixture where there is hair and one that dries, rub in the opposite direction of hair growth. This can be done everyday as its a natural product, results would be seen in couple of weeks." **From following website:

My daughter is 4 years old and she has hair on upper hands and also on the back. She had them when she is born, but I could not put basen mix with haldi and remove them because she was allergic to them. How can I remove them now?

If she is no longer allergic to besan and haldi mix, you could try applying that now - at least once a week give her an entire body scrub with besan and haldi. Also, every morning, when she’s bathing, she should apply soap and scrub her body

**I have a 3 year old daughter. Please suggest me how should I get rid of the thin hair which she has on her body.

**Apply a besan haldi paste, and scrub it off after it dries and thickens. This would gradually reduce her hair over a period of time.

Re: My HAIRY child

Thanks everyone. I am also VERY cynical when it comes to these things. I also don't want to experiment on my child either. A part of me thinks that it doesn't matter and she is just 3 and I should let her be.

I have seen desi totkay that actually work.

I have a friend from India. In her family, all the teenage girls use this stone (pumice type) when they are teenagers and I swear she never even has to wax or shave.

I have also heard about waxing that if you are in puberty and you use wax - that you hair doesn't grow back. I guess it kills the follicle maybe.

Re: My HAIRY child

Yea as redvelvet says besan is what most ppl say work for removing hair on babies.
hmm.. i wish i had waxed during puberty!

Re: My HAIRY child

when my son was a little wee one, a few weeks/months old, i remember my mom telling me to just softly rub the skin where there was unwanted hair. of course for a boy it's a little easier to have more hair as compared to a girl :p
but because they babies are so new, and their skin is so soft, if you gently rub in that area, the hair should disappear or at least somewhat lighten from that area.

i dunno anything about removing hair when the child is older though. and i'd be apprehensive about using atta and gosh know what else on a a child to remove hair.

Re: My HAIRY child

wow good thread with good remidies.. Desi totky.. can i use these totky for my face hair?

Re: My HAIRY child

my friend's daughter was born very hairy... when baby was few months old she waxed her entire body ouple of times... the girl is 9 now and barely has any hair... i dunno if i will have a heart to do it to my daughter though

Re: My HAIRY child

My SIL waxed her baby when she was a few months old. the poor child cried her lungs out but her mum said, you’ll thank me for this later..:hehe: Another friend along with her hubby ‘scotch-taped’ the hair off their newborn..lolzz

People are starting to get their girls start waxing at an early age now, it is said to be effective.

NJgal I’ve also heard the ‘stone’ totka from a class fellow of mine but she wouldn’t give the name away…had such beautiful clear skin.. Can you ask your friend the exact name of the stone please?

Re: My HAIRY child

Hey Ladies,

Here’s is some information that I’ve found about the pumice stone which removes hair. I’ve included the quote and its link:

The Indian - Beauty Tips - How To Get Rid Of Excessive Hair – A New Zealand Indian e-zine - www.TheINDIAN.co.nz

Pumice stones
Among the oldest devices used for temporary hair removal, they are used most often for removing rough skin on heels and elbows. Rubbing pumice over the skin generates mechanical friction, which wears off hair at the skin surface.
The device is inexpensive, easy to use and not as likely as chemical depilatories to cause skin irritation. It is, also, slow and tedious to use and impractical for large areas. If the abrasive is rubbed too vigorously, your skin will feel irritated.

Once the hair is removed, regular treatments afterward may be less time consuming since the hair will be short. Hair growth may become less coarse or dense after years of using a pumice, but this method will not remove hair permanently.

After using a pumice, gently massage oil or body lotion into the area to lessen skin irritation produced by the abrasion.

Tips for Permanent Hair Removal

“A rough stone (like a pumice stone) can be used to remove hair by causing friction”

OMG that sounds TOO young! Their skin is so delicate. Please ladies, be careful before considering this.

OhmyGod how could they do that to a little baby....poor thing must have cried so much...would have broken my heart, even if the baby was as hairy as a gorilla!!!

I think these besan and atta etc rubs are fine, as they are not painful for the baby. But waxing -that is extreme and I dont think should be done on a baby. Should at least wait until the child is old enough to at least say NO to you if they want you to stop, like maybe 10 years old. I dont think I would ever wax a child younger than 9-10, thats just soo sad to me...

Re: My HAIRY child

LOL Sahar you read my mind as I was typing...it really is too young..

Re: My HAIRY child

guys you know something....I too have noticed that past generations like my moms generation and before had far less hair then the generations now.

It must have to do with the growth hormones that are injected in just about everything we eat.

Ditto!

I wouldn't be surprised and I think use of hormones is likely contributing to other physical changes in younger generations: obesity rates, birth weights, etc. 30 years ago, 10-pound babies were almost unheard of, and now I hear on a regular basis of women having 10-11 pound newborns. I don't think we have a good grasp of how different production processes and additives in our food supply affect our body, and at least here in the United States where food is such big business, there doesn't seem to be a lot of political or economic will to shed too much light on the grimmer side of these things.

I know Sahar..that's why she kept it from everyone ..my MIL still doesn't know about this.. she only told me and that too after a year or so..got a :bailan from me too..

Did I sound suggestive? didn't mean too..anyway I wouldn't do it myself..
