It is so simple to operate and now I don’t have to carry a printed sheet from Google Maps and hold it in one hand while steering with the other and steal glances at it in a desparate attempt to figure out the next instruction!
It’s so handy.
It’s not a luxury but a necessity for people to drive a lot.
Just one advice.
Do not depend on GPS too much , take old fasioned printed directions from Mapquest along too. Once in a while for some wiered reason the GPS satellite transmission stops or gets paused or delayed and you miss your turn.
That happened yersterday! Luckily I knew the direction I was going toward, and then the signal came back.
Really? Wow, I've never heard/experienced that - but my GPS is the built-in one, not a portable one. My brother also has a TomTom and his sometimes acts weird. I am not sure if it's TomTom that acts weird or if it's the portable GPS.

thats because behind the scene, your built-in GPS is being aided by a feature called Dead Reckoning (DR) wherein the GPS module continuosuly reads certain vehicle parameters such as speed, angular velocity as well as time elapsed since the loss of actual GPS data from Sats to estimate or predict the current position of the vehicle on the road. Portable GPS units don't have this added functionality.
though I think old stuff was better... this makes us to rely only on gps system... It was better to get know about and remember the roads and streets... GPS also sometime gives you a lenghthy track...
Ive been using Garmin Nuvi 680 for one year now, this is the second one I had after 4 years on a Garmin Streetpilot 2620 and its amazing, and I really like the text to speech feature. I have had MSN direct service for one year, but apart from gas prices its not much use in my city as there are hardly traffic issues apart from construction, still debating on whether to renew msn direct or not.
I fully agree with the comment that GPS is actually a necessity, and not a luxury. People don't realize it till they actually get one.
Losing a signal may an issue for portable units. But printing Mapquest as a back-up just defeats the purpose, I think.
However, one word of caution. Even when using a GPS, always be aware of your surroundings, keep an eye on the road signs and use common sense while following the directions given by the machine.
