My forays into the world of eye makeup.

Re: My forays into the world of eye makeup.

^ It is beautiful. I love how the color in between doesn't take away from the actual look either.

What are good transition colors? This seems like a little darker than skin tone?

Re: My forays into the world of eye makeup.

^I love that look too. It helps that there isn't a deep crease or lines on the lid to take away from the look. Oh and the lashes ALWAYS give it a much "pro" look.

Reha, some good transition colors for my skin (NC20-25) are Soft Brown and Brown Down. I also want Cork or Copperplate as well. I'm thinking of buying Inglot shadows because MAC shadows are not that good of a value for their price. =/

Re: My forays into the world of eye makeup.

But are Inglot of the same quality or better?

Re: My forays into the world of eye makeup.

I think inglot is just as good, if not better. All the shadows are buttery and beautiful

Re: My forays into the world of eye makeup.

^yup, plus they are a much better value for their price.

Started eyeliner so here are attempts:

^I cant seem to click on the pictures but I am loving what I see, esp. the first picture!

Re: My forays into the world of eye makeup.

Reha, do you use a primer before applying the shadows?

I really think you should invest in a good makeup course or go to school for a little bit. I know a couple of gori girls who have gone to school and they do amazing makeup, that would look pretty nice and classy on desi brides. It's actually pretty immaculate.

They really teach you the techniques and tricks. And they will start you from the basics. I'm not saying you're not good or can't learn this on your own, but if you are doing bridal makeup on women who are paying you, they deserve professional stuff. And eye makeup is a hugeeeeee part of any desi brides look. On top of it, all of this has to look good in pictures and in various lighting. And you want to earn a good reputation to build your clientele.

Again, what they teach in the courses/school is priceless stuff for anyone wanting to do something like this. And once you get the basics down, you can always tweak it. Just knowing what brush to use when and how to finish off a look can make a huge difference. You also need to learn about different eye shapes and ways to pronounce or enhance the makeup. And it is all important and possible. etc etc etc.

Re: My forays into the world of eye makeup.

I do use primer on the eyes, yes. I use UD.

You're right. I have a makeup artist that will be giving me private lessons starting the 9th. The same for hair.

The other thing is...a lot of this stuff is trial and error. So many of these things you have to just do and repeat until you get them right. You have to experiment with models, eye shapes, contouring, etc until you see the results you're looking for.

I'd never do makeup unless I was positive I could deliver results.

Re: My forays into the world of eye makeup.

ok that's great. the lessons + all the effort you put in yourself should work out well. iA. good luck :D you really are working hard.

Re: My forays into the world of eye makeup.

Do you use anything before the UD? I'm not sure what MUAs do but I think you need a blank canvas first, like foundation/concealer properly on the whole eye area to make it look completely even, then just a little UD on top where it's needed. Rather than UD for any kind of coverage as well.

Re: My forays into the world of eye makeup.

Thank you! I am definitely trying!

I use a concealer to make the eye area completely even. I apply it with a foundation brush and then the UD with my fingers all over the eye...and then under as well.

I am looking into Amazing Concealer because I want to switch.

Re: My forays into the world of eye makeup.

I’m no expert at doing makeup but I sure have drooled over gazillions of makeup looks so here’s some comments based on that:

I noticed that crease contouring is missing in the eye makeup or perhaps the camera is just not picking it up. For bridal makeup, you’ll have to adjust the makeup to how it’s going to photograph.

In the first few pictures, the outer V shading was also missing so there was no shape to the eye. That is why the latter pics with the outer V defined look much better.

There’s too much shimmer going on in the eye makeup. I once put up a pic in the eye makeup thread where I only used two shimmer eyeshadows, no crease contouring, no outer V defined and it didn’t look nice at all, it made me look sick! And it wasn’t like I was using cheap eyeshadows, this was a MAC look so it just goes to show that even good quality shimmery eyeshadows can look.. umm greasy in photos.

The following pic is no perfection but compare that to the pic above and you can clearly see how much the crease contouring and outerV definition matter.

This is the look I was trying to replicate:

Anyway where was I… oh yeah shimmer… I guess you’d have to be a pro to get the shimmer look just right. Glitter, on the other hand, does look nice in photos, surprisingly. Allenora’s signature bridal makeup involves crease and outerV contouring with a brown eyeshadow, outer V definition/darkening with black/dark brown, glitter on the lids and a slightly shimmery highlight on the browbone.

So try enhancing the natural contours of the eyes and try using more satin finish eyeshadows than shimmery ones. This is pretty much the crease line that I’ve seen desi makeup artists sketch on brides:

Obviously it’s more blended and not just an exaggerated line. I just put that pic up because it shows the crease very clearly so you can see where you should be contouring the crease but of course in a much more subtle/blended manner. So in the end it should look like this:

You can still see the crease, the eye has some shape to it, but it’s all very well blended and not OTT.

In the following pic, they’ve contoured the crease with a grey eyeshadow, darkened the outerV with black, kept the lid very clean.. the lid colour was probably shimmery so they’ve kept the rest of the eyeshadows matte to satin finishes. So it all looks very nice and clean in the end.

Some more desi bridal makeup looks, all incorporating the eye contouring, all from Sadaf Hair and Beauty, all videos can be seen on her channel on youtube. They’re not proper tutorials, she cuts out the important bits on purpose lol, but at least you get to see the blending/contouring etc in action.

(And notice how when the bride has her eyes opened, the eyeshadow is only slightly visible at the outer corner of the eye. It’s not wayyy up the brow bone which can look weird.)

I can see a huge improvement in the makeup looks as I flicked through the thread so you’ll get the hang of it soon, Reha! Makeup isn’t rocket science. Practice is the key. Fair play to you for keeping at it! K I’ll shut up and go to sleep now. -_-

Re: My forays into the world of eye makeup.

BBCue is completely right about matte or satin shades.

I think you are/were looking into getting a palette and someone recommend inglot. I think it would help a lot if you got one soon.

Or you could make up MAC one... a light brown (fawn type colour), mid brown (charcoal brown), dark brown (embark)- these last two can be used for brow filling too depending on if the hair is brown or black. a black like carbon.

And I have deep set eyes... no dissimilar to yours and I keep the darkness to the outer V as in one of BBCues pics.

Re: My forays into the world of eye makeup.

Great post BBQ, I agree with everything and you explained everything perfectly.

Reha, I remember suggesting you practice with matte eyeshadows. Start with one light color and black, this way you'll be able to see the contrast and figure out what you're doing right/wrong and it'll help you perfect crease contouring. Once that's done, you can add shimmer to your looks. Shimmery eyeshadows are tricky and if placed on the wrong areas, they reflect light where the shouldn't and make the eyes appear odd.

Re: My forays into the world of eye makeup.

Wow, great explanation, BBQ! I loved that cut-crease bridal at the end. Absolutely gorgeous.

Re: My forays into the world of eye makeup.

excellent post BarbieCue .. im trying to learn eyemakeup these days too .

Re: My forays into the world of eye makeup.

BBC…thank you for that! It was extremely helpful and I am going to try and mimic them.

I am going to go a bit bolder with the crease today. I will take some pictures and post with the updated attempts today!

You guys are amazing!!!

:hugz:

Re: My forays into the world of eye makeup.

That cut crease explanation was awesome. I try to create a crease but mine is with powder and gets lost in all the eye shadow. I need to define it MUCH more.

Re: My forays into the world of eye makeup.

Updated attempts from yesterday on my own eyes…these are not from the shoot:
