Karachi Nazim, Mustafa Kamal placed among top-three world mayors

KARACHI: Reputed journal, Foreign Policy in its report has declared Karachi Nazim, Syed Mustafa Kamal the second best mayor of the year 2008 world.

Foreign Policy report titled ‘The Mayor of the moment’ said that Germany’s Berlin City Mayor, Klaus Wowereit, 55 topped the list among the best mayors of the world for the current year and Karachi Nazim, Syed Mustafa Kamal, 36 placed second on the basis of his last three years’ performance.

Global Cities Index named this survey has assessed the performance of the mayors of world’s major cities giving special importance to creating better opportunity for investment in the city and city planning.

The journal eulogizing Karachi Nazim for his hard work declared him the symbol of making a difference in the city and innovation in city planning.

Karachi Nazim is playing a key-role in strengthening the international ties, promoting foreign investment and tourism, said the report.

It further said that Nazim Mustafa Kamal has changed the outlook of the city in a short time and his slogan that Karachi is going to emerge as another Dubai in the region declared most admired.

This is excellent news. Mayor Kamal is a good guy and his heart is in the right place. May Allah give him strength to improve the city.

Karachi has the potential to become next Dubai, Mumbai, or Bangalore. I hope Mayor Kamal can open up the city and make it as tolerant and tourist friendly as Dubai.

Off course his challenges are enormous. Poor infrastructure couple of local Taliban will put brakes on his plans. But I am sure he will succeed in the end.

Excellent achievement indeed and very deserving personality as well… :k: :jhanda:

Re: Karachi Nazim, Mustafa Kamal placed among top-three world mayors.

I do give him credit for utilising the funding given to the city for development projects, I wish Karachi can get some more funding during Mustafa Kamal's tenure.

Re: Karachi Nazim, Mustafa Kamal placed among top-three world mayors.

Not to crash the party here, but can someone tell me what"reputed journal" says that? I googled it, but couldn't find anything on this. Sounds like this stuff came straight from MQM's website.

Samraz Khan … Brother, when we have so many pathetically low-life ethnic racist or politically biased parasites all over Pakistan who undermine and could not appreciate anything good of those they have ethnic, sectarian or political differences, but only sing the songs of their corrupt Masters who are mostly Thugs and Leeches, it is not surprising that we have divided Pakistan full of hate and mistrust on ground of provincialism, ethnicity, politics, religion or sect. I think that we should keep ourselves away from judging a person on basis of such differences and should start appreciating anyone who does something appreciating.

Anyhow, here is the news from ‘JANG/GEO/NEWS group’ (favourite of Master Nawaz and Master Zardari) quoting a magazine as most reputable and considering the ranking of that magazine not only reliable but a great achievement for the Mayor:

Mustafa Kamal declared 2nd best among top mayors in the globe

KARACHI: An award winning American magazine** Foreign Policy**, has chosen Nazim Karachi, Syed Mustafa Kamal as second among the three best mayors in the world for the year 2008.

The magazine has included the names of Berlin Mayor Klaus Wowereit and Wang Hongju, Mayor of Chongqing as the other mayors of the moment, said a CDGK statement issued here Sunday.

The magazine said no city globalises on its own, but with shrewd investments and smart urban planning, a mayor can help turn a regional player into a global powerhouse. Here’s how three of the world’s top mayors are climbing the ladder, it said.

About Syed Mustafa Kamal the magazine wrote that the mayor of Karachi is an unlikely poster child for innovative urban planning.

It said the 36-year-old Syed Mustafa Kamal governs a city that’s more often in the news for religious violence than cosmopolitan ways. But the hard-charging Kamal is looking to change all that. He’s courting foreign investment, encouraging international ties, and boosting the city’s tourism.

According to the US magazine Kamal is not shy about his goals: He has said he wants to turn Karachi into the next Dubai. His Green Karachi project aims to plant thousands of trees in the city. Kamal is not letting anything stand in the way of his grand plans. He has threatened to arrest anyone who tries to cut down the new saplings, it added.

Meanwhile City Nazim Syed Mustafa Kamal congratulated his party (Muttahida Qaumi Movement) leader, Altaf Hussain.

In a statement from London on Sunday, Mustafa Kamal said all credit for this should go to Altaf Hussain who has selected the representatives from lower and middle class that represents 98 percent of the total population of the country.

It is also the recognition of the philosophy of MQM and the 30-year- long struggle of its leader Altaf Hussain.

He said in the past there was no concept of ownership in Karachi, however we owned this city and carried out development works on a large scale, however, t a lot of work is still to be done and the city is still far from the concept of an ideal city.

He said that provided the Haq Parast continued with the city government, all problems still to be resolved, will also be solved in future, according to the statement.

Mustafa Kamal said despite all the obstacles and different kinds of challenges and difficulties faced by his team, he has never let down the people and will continue to do so in future also.

Claiming absence of one command and controlling authority for the city, Nazim Karachi said at present 13 organisations are controlling the city’s municipal affairs which have made the situation very difficult for development of the city.

We have contacted everywhere from top to bottom, who has anything to do with the policy and decision making and now they should pay attention to this.

He said Karachi is no ordinary city but it is the backbone of national economy. We have developed Karachi so that the country could also develop and the people of Pakistan get the fruit of prosperity, he added.

Nazim Karachi said his whole team from a peon and driver to top city government officials, City Naib Nazim, town nazims, union nazims and all elected representatives of Karachi played their important role in the recognition of his performance at international level.

1st I thought it was something like “image on plant leaves” since I couldn’t find anything either. But when I digged deeper, I found this..

yar when you need to look for any latest update, just googling sometimes is not enough. Do a google news and sort it by date and you will have your result. Try doing it again :)

Not really. Mustafa Kamal developed Karachi after Musharraf gave something like Rs 28 billion to Karachi for development and he utilised it. I don't beleive any other govt in past gave that much money to Karachi for development.

Re: Karachi Nazim, Mustafa Kamal placed among top-three world mayors.

^^ so mean karachi always reli on federal budget? it doesnt get anything from Provincial government being its Capital at all?

Well, federation rely on taxes from Karachi. This year federation is expecting around Rs1350 billion in federal tax collection (for year 2008-09) and Karachi contribution in that collection is most likely going to around Rs 1000 billion. Federal government is going to distribute around Rs 650 billion from that collection to provinces, and Sindh province (including Karachi) would get around Rs 150 to 175 billion out of that Rs 650 billion ... or 15 percent of what got collected from Sindh (around Rs 1000 billion).

Everywhere in the world, distribution of funds by federal government takes into account contribution as well as other factors different from population, except Pakistan where major criteria of contribution is population. Actually, Pakistan has to change system of fund distribution that takes into account not only contribution (because of that Sindh loses a lot), but also area as well as level of development, because big area and low development needs more fund for development (and in this respect, balochistan loses a lot).

But then, you are right that regardless of fund, a dynamic, hard working, energetic and visionary Mayor can have lot of impact on development of a city, else a corrupt mayor with little energy and dynamism would let a city run down regardless of availability of funds. I think that if more funds were available, more of Karachi problems would have got solved by now under this Mayor. Anyhow, Mustafa Kamal as Mayor did quite well and utilised scarce available resources quite effectively and efficiently.

I didn't say anything about Provincial or Federal, did I? :) Karachi was granted Rs 28billion by Musharraf, whether he instructed Provincial government to do that or he asked Federal to release money to Sindh govt which in turn released to Karachi... I don't know. Karachi used to get money in past but that was very small amount which barely supported maintenance cost. This additional money helped in projects like many fly-overs and other infra-structure spending.

Re: Karachi Nazim, Mustafa Kamal placed among top-three world mayors.

Great news, always loved that guy for what he's doing. So enthusiastic, like no other politician I've seen in Pakistan.

Well the first Bhutto Government (1972-1977) also spent generously on Karachi and constructed some mega structure of that time: I would mention following three:

  1. Liaqatabad Super Market
  2. Liaqatabad Subway
  3. Dual carraige way bridge at Teen Hatti.
