Knowing is better than supposing 
It depends on your definition of Middle East. Things are quite different country to country.
Some other points
1- Muslims are not just middle eastern
2- looking at the worse examples from Middle East are really not something to aspire to be.
Hopefully the argument is not one which goes along the lines of .. Muslim in Saudi Arabia treat minorities poorly so people elsewhere can treat Muslims in those places poorly.
