Muslims must feel British - Straw

Jack Straw said he had carefully considered his remarks
Commons leader Jack Straw says he wants to avoid a situation where “the Muslim community, or any of our communities, feel isolated and defensive”.

A “stronger sense of shared British identity” was needed among all ethnic groups and religions, the Blackburn MP told an inter-faith conference.

Some groups have criticised him for saying he asked Muslim women if they would remove their veils in meetings.

But Mr Straw said a “frank debate” on the state of society was needed.

‘Common values’

In a speech at University College London, he argued that during the last 50 years, people’s “sense of class” had dissolved.

This had led to an “erosion of collective sense of community”, he said.

Mr Straw claimed people had come to view themselves “more in terms of their cultural, ethnic, national, gender or religious affiliations”.

“Britishness” could provide “common values”, such as liberty, tolerance and the rule of law, he added.

This was “not about a nation - there are Scottish, English and Welsh nations”.

But people should speak a “common language”, as this was essential to communication between religions and ethnic groups, Mr Straw said.

‘Splinter and divide’

He told the Three Faiths Forum: "Simply breathing the same air as other members of society isn’t integration.

“Britishness is thus an identity available to Anglicans, Catholics, Jews, Muslims, Sikhs, Hindus and those of other religions and none, and a central element of that identity is the principle that everyone has the freedom to practise their faith not as a matter of tolerance but of right.”

He added: "There is no inevitability that our communities will splinter and divide.

“Nor is there any inevitability that our attempts to heal divides will succeed. Progress depends on our willingness to engage.”

Last month, a row erupted after Mr Straw revealed in a newspaper column that he had asked a woman wearing a veil to uncover her nose and mouth during a meeting at his constituency surgery in Blackburn.

Moulana Hanif, from the Blackburn Mosques Forum, said: “Jack Straw has insulted Islam and Muslims and he has no right to do so.”

But Prime Minister Tony Blair has since described veils as a “mark of separation” which make “people from outside the community feel uncomfortable”.

‘Not less British’

In his speech, Mr Straw said he feared some groups in society were “drifting apart”, adding: “I would write the same column again.”

One veiled woman in the audience said to him afterwards: "I recognise that you feel uncomfortable.

"I sympathise in a way but I don’t accept that these women who visited your surgery are less integrated.

“I don’t fell any less British or feel any less common value with British society.”

Mr Straw replied: "We will both go away from this. If we bumped into each other in the street, I would be able to say hello to you.

"You would not be able to do the same. The obvious reason is that I cannot see your face.

“Chance conversations make society stronger.”

A group of about a dozen people protested outside the UCL ahead of the minister’s arrival.

Re: Muslims must feel British - Straw

^ Nah, they'd just think "wow she's hot" and automatically treat her better and nicer and give her more perks :p

Re: Muslims must feel British - Straw

^its a who can be more kanjar thing,

britain has always had debates like this. its always about some aspect of minority ethnic groups. such as which sporting country team do they support without ever acknowleging the fact that in many peoples views we arnt even welcome to support england as we're not english. it emanates from the real low class smelly goray upto the average. the problem is the 'average' is virtually everyone. mr straw is not one of these people but is aiming at pleasing them thus making our lives that bit harder and adding a bit more friction to our every step.

its all linked with the other issues around at this time.
its exclusiveness, does the job of splitting communities
inclusiveness on the other hand would bring togather, but is that the aim? we shall find out

btw mr straw no longer needs his muslim voters, hes got himself a unelected job. you can call it great or shameless timing to have a go

Re: Muslims must feel British - Straw

^^ then why live there?

Re: Muslims must feel British - Straw

exactly

are you a low class smelly like i mentioned?

if your questioning my right to live there or urging me to move then the answer is yes!

i was infact trying to show a better way forward inclusiveness

Re: Muslims must feel British - Straw

People have the right to have and express their opinions. Britain is home to most of us....its our country as well. We are also British.

I wish you wouldn't keep on saying why live there all the time in different threads. That just shows your pathetic mentality, which is against our western standards.

Re: Muslims must feel British - Straw

^ Shud i stop brushing my teeth then? :bummer:

Re: Muslims must feel British - Straw

manjan/dentonic does not count.. desi. Anyways desis spin on the not brushing teeth is the not wearing deodorant. I think that makes up for it.

Re: Muslims must feel British - Straw

I notice that a lot of people are ready to define what is NOT Britishness or Americannes - very few are willing to say what these are. So let me take a shot at this.

is invading colonising and enslaving other countries britishness?
is killing own royal wife or cheating on britishness?
is following monty python the symbol of britshness?
is practicing white supremacy under the depth of high level 'fairness' britsihness?

I ask because all these things happened centuries ago as well as at present.

the only britishness I can accept is english and that too because it is the engine of the world.

Re: Muslims must feel British - Straw

want to start a similar list for what is desiness so we can like see the difference and adjust appropriately ;)

Re: Muslims must feel British - Straw

Jack Straw is a Jack A**

Re: Muslims must feel British - Straw

correction now that he is oh so concerned about "britishness" I hereby dub him a unionjack ass

Re: Muslims must feel British - Straw

Britain was never an immigrant country to begin with

So you can’t blame the state for not having immigrant accomodations

Canada, USA, Australia are immigrant nations and as such have integrated their muslims well…

I am sorry for my previous comments…:halo:

Re: Muslims must feel British - Straw

can someone please explain these comments? what the hell is he on about?

Re: Muslims must feel British - Straw

he is saying when people work in offices they need to interact with each otehr

wearing a veil prevents that

Re: Muslims must feel British - Straw

really? she cant say hello to him because shes covering her face, whereas he can, because his face uncovered?

if that is the point he is making, then its no wonder he feels uncomfortable infront of niqabis. he doesnt seem to have a clue.

and to be honest, the only ppl who seem to have an issue in communicating are the folks who have a problem with it, not the people wearing niqabs themselves. its the feelings of contempt, fear and derision that the image of a niqabi woman provokes and that is derived from ignorance and arrogance. Two deadly combinations.

hence the issue here is yet again being portrayed on as the fault of muslims when infact its got nowt much to do with them. From what ive seen, its not the muslims who dont wish to integrate, its the racist, 'up themselves mindset' that create a mental and unneccesary barrier. and for all we care, those types can go jump off a cliff. they're not really worth the time of our day IMO.

Re: Muslims must feel British - Straw

Listen to me everyone i think i know whats going on!

1) This crafty pig called jack straw has found out he does not need muslim votes as there is another audience he can get votes off i.e rascist scum

2) Muslim communities are also at fault for voting for him, in return for council houses

3) He lost alot of support due to the iraq war but still remained in power so he is coming extra cheeky

Re: Muslims must feel British - Straw

she probably can but covering the face is not a part of Islam but its a tribal tradtition of arabs and persians that got incorporated into Islam

actually its a valid point. how can u interact with someone when their face is covered?

of course why would they?

they are not interacting with anyone with their face covered?

imagine if everyone worked wearing veils, how will u identify one person from the rest....

Again these vieils are not a part of Islam but a Persian concept in which women of higher nobility covered their faces

so is beleiving that veils are hijab are a part of islam. they are not

some muslims want to integrate by turning England into saudi arabia.

sorry thats not gonna happen

and the divide continues
