Muslim women who refused full-body scan are barred from flight

**Muslim women who refused to take ‘naked’ full-body scan are barred from Manchester to Pakistan flight **

Two Muslim women have become the first passengers to refuse to subject themselves to controversial ‘naked’ full body airport scans, it emerged today.
The pair - who security officials insist were selected at random - opted to miss their flight to Pakistan and forfeit tickets worth £400 each rather than be screened.

One of the women refused to go through the full-body scanner at Manchester Airport on religious grounds while her companion also declined for ‘medical reasons’. The women were travelling together to Islamabad when they were selected to pass through the controversial security screen after checking-in at Terminal Two at the airport.

An estimated 15,000 people have already passed through the scanners, with the pair the first passengers to refuse a scan. Both told airport staff they were not willing to be scanned. They were warned they would not be allowed to board the Pakistan International Airlines flight if they refused. The pair decided they would rather forfeit their £400 tickets and left the airport with their luggage.

The £80,000 scanners were introduced at Heathrow and Manchester airports on February 5. The X-ray machines allow security staff to see a ‘naked’ image of passengers to show up hidden weapons and explosives, but it has attracted criticism for also showing clear outlines of passengers’ genitals.

Manchester Airport confirmed the passengers had refused to be scanned but said it had received no complaint from the women. However, civil liberties campaigners say the incident could form the basis of a legal test case to challenge the use of the Rapiscan device in airports. Alex Deane, director of campaign group Big Brother Watch, said the organisation would represent the women if they wished to challenge the decision in court.

He said: 'People shouldn’t have to sacrifice their health, their faith, their dignity, or their privacy in order to fly. ‘People with health and religious concerns shouldn’t be forced to go through these scanners if they have good reason not to. Foolishly, the government has ignored both issues and ignored privacy concerns to boot - they are in the wrong on this.’

There is one Rapiscan scanner in use in a trial at Manchester Airport’s terminal two, which has seen 15,000 people pass through it. A further two devices - one each for terminals one and three - have been delivered and are set to be operational within the next month. The scanners have been criticised by the human rights group Liberty and the government’s own Equality and Human Rights Commission. Only selected passengers are scanned. Security staff say they are chosen at random and not according to race, religion or ethnicity.

Councillor Afzal Khan, who was Manchester’s first Asian lord mayor, said the vast majority of Muslims believed that any privacy concerns should be outweighed by ensuring they are safe when flying. He said: ‘Hundreds of Muslim passengers have gone through without a problem. While I appreciate people’s concerns for privacy, these steps are necessary for our safety and security.’
A Manchester Airport spokesman said: 'Two female passengers who were booked to fly out of Terminal Two refused to be scanned for medical and religious reasons.

‘In accordance with the government directive on scanners, they were not permitted to fly. Body scanning is a big change for customers and we are aware that privacy concerns are on our customers’s minds, which is why we have put strict procedures in place to reassure them that their privacy will be protected.’

Last month, Transport Secretary Lord Adonis stressed that an interim code of practice on the use of body scanners stipulated that passengers would not be selected ‘on the basis of personal characteristics’.

Two weeks ago, a week after the scanners were introduced at Manchester and Heathrow airports, Islamic scholars in the U.S. said Muslim travellers should not pass through the scanners because they violate religious rules on nudity.
The Fiqh Council of North America issued a fatwa, or religious ruling, warning Muslims not to go through the scanners. ‘It is a violation of clear Islamic teachings that men or women be seen naked by other men and women,’ read the order. ‘Islam highly emphasises haya (modesty) and considers it part of faith. The Quran has commanded the believers, both men and women, to cover their private parts.’

In the U.S., there are now 40 scanners in 19 airports and could be as many as 450 by the end of the year. The powerful council of ten scholars that issued the fatwa is affiliated with the Islamic Society of North America.

Hmmmm, I was thinking people refusing the full body scanners could have a physical pat-down instead.. I guess it was only a matter of time before someone refused to be examined by the scanner..

Re: Muslim women who refused full-body scan are barred from flight

sorrybut I call bull on this,

yes modesty is part and parcel of the faith but I am not very modest at my annual check up.. and that is not some anonymous person sitting far away viewing some grainy images of KC and the sunshine band but a doc checking everything, and I guess soon I will be subjected to the digital rectal exam as well.

what are the physicals like for armed forces enlistment in any country..anyone gone through it..the bend over and cough while the dude is holding your gearbox? or flashing a beam of light on your sphincter to check for stuff..

so modesty schmodesty...this is different than skinny dipping at tony's or streaking across campus..although that can be fun and refreshing. but yeah against modesty guidelines..

do these ladies not go for physicals and pap smears and all that stuff, no obgyn exams?

why are people making an issue out of a non issue?

fiqh council can .... well..they know what they can do..
they need to have a house cleaning there and up the common sense quotient there.

Re: Muslim women who refused full-body scan are barred from flight

how are these stations to be manned? operated by women for women and men for men??

Re: Muslim women who refused full-body scan are barred from flight

You know Islamically a niqaabi woman must show her face if asked for security reasons...such as her photo in the passport...now the intention behind a body scan is to ensure safety...even her own. Someone could have placed something on her body without her knowing, very well possible, it's not for the security dudes to get a kick out of. I think everyone should cooperate unless they have a medical device on them for which they anyways get clearance via their special IDs.

Re: Muslim women who refused full-body scan are barred from flight

and btw, they dont appear as naked on that monitor as they thing they do. Its not that 40 yrs old Najma aunty will appear as a Playboy centerfold on that screen. It comes out more like a sillehoute.

Re: Muslim women who refused full-body scan are barred from flight

chosen at random?!? YEA RIGHT! They deliberately chose the ones that stand out most as potential terrorists. I know because I got stopped boarding my plan to Dubai (en route to Islamabad) and got asked how much money I was taking but NO ONE else got asked.

And people I think you should realise that getting checked at a doctor's and getting a body scan are two completely different things. the latter is alot more private and confidential whereas the former doesnt have a privacy guarantee. Also, GOD knows what kind of people will be manning these scanners.

When you go to a doctor to get checked you go when you think something is wrong with you and you place your trust in the doctor's expertise. You can't place that trust in people who man these scanners.

Also, these scanners can show a woman's more intimate areas in graphic detail and I think these women are right to deny going through the scan! I would be absolutely horrified and feel violated if anyone BUT my husband saw my body in such detail. They have EVERY right to deny this scan on religious grounds because my religion is everything to me, it's a pity other people don't feel this way.

Lastly, these goris dont mind going through these scanners because clothes are just a temporary cover for them. They are far more willing to strip off at the slightest hint of sunshine so why would they care to cover or be modest?

Re: Muslim women who refused full-body scan are barred from flight

these women refused to be scanned to protect their "haya" and I applaud them for it.

Re: Muslim women who refused full-body scan are barred from flight

stardust, I get your point but I don't think the people handling the scanners are some perverts...they are just doing their jobs, ruling out possible troublemakers. I know it seems like they single out the muslims but maybe if we cooperate they'd realize we are regular people like the others. I know I too would be uncomfortable...but don't women handle the women's scans?

Before the scanners, airport personnel would do a pat down in cases where they needed to do a more detailed check of the individual. I wonder whether that option was given to the women? I'm assuming that the pat down these days would be more invasive than the scanner since the personnel may ask the woman to remove articles of clothing that prevent an effective search (i.e the abayas, etc).

While I'm not a fan of the scanners, in the interest of collective public safety I'm willing to forego certain personal liberties.

Personally, I don't get the double standard of certain special interest groups - on one hand they want to enjoy all of the "liberating" rights granted in civil society, but when it comes to giving up certain personal liberties (which equitably applied across the board) - it becomes a controversy.

I don't like the idea of full body scans, especially if its a man on the other side

Why can't a female just use a scanner on them in a separate room?

Re: Muslim women who refused full-body scan are barred from flight

^ Iam afraid I dont know niksik

But I do feel niksik the more you target Muslims the angrier we get. What good is it going to achieve if we have these scanners? first it was remove your shoes, then get rid of liquids and now this? next time they will say come empty handed to the airport in a bikini (exaggeration I know) but it really ruins the whole experience of flying which IMO is meant to be a fun one!

If some idiot wants to blow up a large number of people, he will find another way.

Re: Muslim women who refused full-body scan are barred from flight

Traveling has become pretty painful and if you’re with little kids it’s even worse when one is sleeping or cranky :bummer:

Yeah the real “bad” guys do find another way but if we know something we do have to try and take care of it. It’s never convenient but I guess if it’s for the greater good we have to try and participate…

Well..

look the fiqh council in their infinite wisdom made some over arching statement, anyone can poke holes through it in a minute.

you cant put your trust in security personnel, sure and by the same token yo cant do the same with doctors and nurses, god knows what tupe pf pl go to med school, nursing school, orderly school.. other assorted ppl who see ppl in the hospital.

Personally, i would rather not have these things myself, civil liberties, health issues and all that jazz, but better arguments are needed than just going modesty modesty, because if tomorrow they say its a fully trained female agent looking at the images, then everyone would be all of a sudden okay with it?

in chicago where these things are getting launched, u can refuse it, but if u do u will be frisked and a handheld metal detector thingie would be passed over you.

UK may need to sort things out a bit. altough I do understand that passenger can request that the image viewer be of the same gender.

Re: Muslim women who refused full-body scan are barred from flight

As long as people can understand that all these airport security measures are not to harass them but in fact, in place ..so it might save their own life one day, we will be at peace with them.

I am sure we all will be extremely grateful if we learned that airport security caught a guy through these scanners who was about to board our plane with a plastic bomb up his rear end an was ready to explode our plane.

Re: Muslim women who refused full-body scan are barred from flight

my only point is that even after this if i am on a place that some jackass blows up and yours truly is sadly and suddenly taken away from this world who needs me so badly, then my ghost will haunt all these policymakers forever

....or until my ghost gets bored of haunting policy makers and starts haunting hot models instead

Re: Muslim women who refused full-body scan are barred from flight

I would forego my "haya" if it meant that my child would be safe on the flight.......anyday.

great…now I have to go become a model…

i dont have to die and become a ghost to haunt you muzna

Re: Muslim women who refused full-body scan are barred from flight

These ladies probably got scared after all the nonsense they heard on TV and Radio by some extremists.

That they will appear fully naked, and their pics will circle on the web and loads of guys will jack off to them or something.

Re: Muslim women who refused full-body scan are barred from flight

would these scanners have caught the underwear bomber? i think it would have..probably terrorists will invent a more innovative way but why to give them easy option..
