LOL, like Russia in Chechnya? Sure. It is a rule, perhaps even a law of nature, that countries inflict much more harm than terrorists or rebels do. You can’t compare Beslan to the bombing of Grozny. Just like you can’t compare the Ameircan war in Iraq to WWII. The scale is waaaayyyy off.
The killing of civliians is perfectly legitimate according to American and British military doctorine. There mission has an imperalist bent to it (not to say it is a re-establishment of colonialism), and so there are obvious strategic advantages to minimizing civlian casualities.
However, when stiff resistance is met, the American doctorine is to use overwhealning force. If the situation is hot, i.e. in the heat of combat, the Americans will pay little heed to the presence of civilians in the area. Such is the story of Iraq. Most recently, the American operations in the north-west of Iraq (on the border of Syria). Many civilians were killed. It’s disengenous at best to suggest that this is all the “insurgents” fault.
The American campaigns in Cambodia and Viet Nam, on the other hand, did see the mass depopulation of civilian areas sympathetic to the enemy. This was a matter of policy, not consequence.
IF the Americans found themselves in a similar situation, they would use similar force. Happily, the Iraqi insurgency is low-intensity. Thank God…otherwise Iraq would be a smoldering pit. That, though, is a credit to Iraqis, and not by any means indiciative of how “nice” Americans are.
This is a load of crap. I was passing by a bar in the US when war broke out in Iraq, with those inside it gleeful at the “shock and awe” attacks they saw. They damn well knew Iraqis were going to die, and they could care less. So spare us.
The fact is, in the American mind, Iraqis aren’t “innocent”. They’re tainted…untrustable. Could be “good” (i.e. pro-American) or “bad”.
For every American you can find that thought the Iraq-attack was a bad idea, and deplorable, I can find you four Muslims who think the same of the WTC. But YOU choose to identitfy all Muslims with the handful who went out in the streets celebrating (never mind people were actually doing that the world over…in Mexico they even started selling OBL T-shrits!!).
