Muslim Teacher Suspended For Wearing Veil

http://uk.news.yahoo.com/14102006/325/muslim-teacher-says-veil-problem.html

LONDON (Reuters) - A Muslim teaching assistant suspended for wearing a veil in school said the garment had never been a problem for pupils at the Heathfield Church of England Junior School in Dewsbury, West Yorkshire.

Aishah Azmi told BBC radio that pupils had “never complained” and said there had never been an issue about children having difficulty in understanding her talk through the garment.

She said many of the pupils at the school were Muslim and would have been used to seeing their mothers wearing the veil.

The BBC said Kirkless Council had asked her to take off her veil in class, but she told the Today programme she disputed their version of events.

Azmi said she had always been willing to take her veil off in front of children, but had refused to do so in the presence of male colleagues.

A employment tribunal will consider the case.

The issue of Muslim women wearing veils was thrust into the spotlight last week when Jack Straw said Muslim women who wore full veils made community relations difficult.

He said he would prefer that women did not wear them because they acted as a “visible statement of separation and difference.”
On Saturday about 100 Muslim protesters shouted at Straw, a former foreign secretary and now leader of the house, as he arrived to hold a surgery at his constituency in Blackburn, Lancashire.

Re: Muslim Teacher Suspended For Wearing Veil

If she’s teaching kids, she really should not even be wearing it in class. Some people like to go too far.

Re: Muslim Teacher Suspended For Wearing Veil

^According to the article, she doesn't always wear it in front of the kids.

Re: Muslim Teacher Suspended For Wearing Veil

PyariC
she just didn’t want to take it off in front of her male colleagues…yah thats way too far!!! She is an extremist no doubt.

if a sikh guy was wearing his thing in class, and these events unfolded, who would u be siding with? Yah i know, when it comes to muslims its different, it seems sinister. Its sum1s religion, and if u don’t like it, don’t hire them.

Re: Muslim Teacher Suspended For Wearing Veil

Actually, I know of a case of a sikh guy who was teaching and who was fired, because the student's thought he resembled a terrorist.

Its not just muslims that get affected by these sorts of stereotypes.

Re: Muslim Teacher Suspended For Wearing Veil

^Muslims r just the main focus of them...thats all...and the Israelis/Jews/Every other group go unscathed...hmm conspiracy perhaps?

So r u gonna retract ur statement about how the TA went too far.

Minister says veil teacher should be sacked

http://uk.news.yahoo.com/15102006/325/minister-says-veil-teacher-sacked.html

LONDON (Reuters) - The minister responsible for race and faith called on Sunday for a Muslim teaching assistant suspended for wearing a veil to be sacked, entering a growing row over integration.

Minister for Local Government and Community Cohesion Phil Woolas told the Sunday Mirror that 24-year-old Aishah Azmi’s decision to wear a veil while teaching made it impossible for her to perform her duties.

“She should be sacked. She has put herself in a position where she can’t do her job,” he said.

Woolas was not the only government minister to pronounce on faith issues on Sunday. Cabinet Minister Peter Hain rubbished a decision by British Airways to send home a worker for wearing a Christian cross.

“Frankly I think British Airway’s order for her not to wear her cross is loopy,” the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland told the BBC.

BA employee Nadia Eweida had refused to cover up her cross necklace under a scarf, which the airline said contravened its policy that jewellery and religious symbols on chains should not be on display.

The dispute over Azmi’s veil is currently before an employment tribunal which is set to rule within days.

On Saturday Azmi told the BBC that the garment, which left just her eyes exposed, had never been a problem for pupils at the Headfield Church of England Junior School in Dewsbury, West Yorkshire.

She said students had “never complained” and there had never been an issue about children having difficulty in understanding her talk through the garment.
She added that although she was unveiled during an interview for the job and that a man was present, her faith meant she could not be unveiled in front of male colleagues while teaching.

Woolas said Azmi’s stance amounted to sex discrimination:
“By insisting that she will wear the veil if men are there, she’s saying; ‘I’ll work with women, not men’. That’s sexual discrimination. No headteacher could agree to that.”

Azmi has said she was always willing to take her veil off in front of children, but had refused to do so in the presence of male colleagues.
The issue of Muslim women wearing veils was thrust into the spotlight over a week ago when Jack Straw said Muslim women who wore full veils made community relations difficult.
He said he would prefer that women did not wear them because they acted as a “visible statement of separation and difference.”

n if she is not allowed to teach only 'cause of the veil......than it's relegious discrimination.....
but yea..if she is incompetent...then tht's another issue.....

Re: Muslim Teacher Suspended For Wearing Veil

Oh please PCG, you're getting ridiculous now, I've never seen a Paki girl with a inferiority complex that severe.

Do you have comprehension problems? Read the article again.

What I see happening to Muslims just reinforces what Islam says about being nice but vary of them. I see the wisdom behind Hijrah and not settling amongst them unless it be for a good reason such as missionary work.

Re: Minister says veil teacher should be sacked

I think the article is quite clear that it's not her incomptence, her Niqaab is the issue.

She says kids don't have a problem understanding her through her Niqaab but even then she is willing to remove it infront of them and fellow females but only asks to be allowed to wear it when there are unrelated males around.

They hate Niqaab because it's a testimony that their ways of nudity and promiscuity (which are the norm for western women) are not freedom/liberation to the Muslim woman, a Muslim woman wearing the Niqaab of her own freewill in their own so called "free country" is a smack on their faces when they say Muslim women in Afghanistan and Pakistan are opressed and need liberating.

I guess religious discrimination is acceptable against Muslims now, it'll become the norm.

Re: Minister says veil teacher should be sacked

Just read one thing that seemed a little off. rest I agree yeah she shoukd have a right to do as she please as long as it is not breaking written policies, in which case policies can be challenged but until changed those are the policies.

so anyways…this one sentence confused the hell outta me.

So not wearing it for interview was fine but not for teaching?

Re: Minister says veil teacher should be sacked

Oh i re-read it.. nevermind :smack:

Re: Minister says veil teacher should be sacked

Levels of religious commitment change with time, maybe she had only just begun wearing it at the time of her interview and was working on it?

Re: Minister says veil teacher should be sacked

thats so rightly said:naraz: dumb westeners:snooty:

Re: Minister says veil teacher should be sacked

I have no problem with what anyone chooses to wear. Just as a women with a veil makes Jack Straw and his fellow peers uncomfortable, a naked woman makes me uncomfortable. All individuals have the right to choose what they wear, weather it be a veil or a mini-skirt and no-one should have the right to dictate.

On the issue generally, it is wrong to condmen or forego a woman of her of right to wear the veil. Where is the line drawn? Do we then attak goths, moshers etc.

However, in this case I do not understand why she feels the need to wear a veil to teach children, there is nothing in islam (to my knowledge) that states that a women should cover herself in front of 8 year old children. Why has she not worn the veil to the interview? Has she not then been fraudulant in her inetrview, and this is considered a sackable offence and her contract void.

Agar parda itna zyada hi karna hai, to pir ghar hi rehna chaiya.

Re: Minister says veil teacher should be sacked

^ She said she doenst wear the veil in front of her kids..

Maybe she dint wear it to the interview, just as if she was getting her ID foto taken.. to show ur ID u have to show ur face, warna what's the point of an ID? Also, she only showed her face in the interview, it's not like she was dressed in "normal" career attire (which wud be pretty naked-compared to having a face veil).

Re: Minister says veil teacher should be sacked

So if she can attend the interview without her niqab, why can she not attend work without it?

Re: Minister says veil teacher should be sacked

^ I believe the aritcle says that she was willing to take it off in teh classroom with children present, just not in front of male colleagues. Whether she actually did take it off in front of children is different. Her work is primairly with children, so there's nothing stopping her from taking it off with children, just not in front of her coworkers.

"By insisting that she will wear the veil if men are there, she's saying; 'I'll work with women, not men'. That's sexual discrimination. No headteacher could agree to that." **

does wool-ass work? how the hell is this discrmination? she is not saying that she will not work with men, she is saying that she will work while wearig her veil, and while I am not a veil supporter, there are plenty of women who get their jobs done while wearing veils. does this moron even know what discrimination means?

She is there to teach kds and can take veil off when teaching kids, or keep it on, as long as she is able to get her job done well, f she cant then it is a different story. Now what work would she need to do with her male colleagues which would need her to take the veil off?

I dont read anywhere that she is refusing to work with male colleagues, but is saying that she would like to have her veil on when working with male collagues.

Here is a very simple solution, put a door on her room, she can take off the veil while teaching if a male collegue needs to interrupr her class he knocks, she puts her veil on, talks and then, closes the door when she is done.

But that would be common sense and logic..

** He said he would prefer that women did not wear them because they acted as a "visible statement of separation and difference."**

who the hell cares what wool-ass prefers, I prefer for him to shut the hell up. because it acts as a 'visible statement of bigots"

he should be renamed the minister of ass clowns. oh wait, labour is going to lose soon anyways.
