Muslim passenger removed from flight!

WASHINGTON – Nine Muslim passengers were kicked off a flight from Washington, D.C., to Florida after other passengers reported hearing a suspicious remark about airplane security.

AirTran Airways spokesman Tad Hutcheson called the incident on the New Year’s Day flight from Reagan National Airport to Orlando, Fla., a misunderstanding, but defended the company’s response. He said the airline followed federal rules and did nothing wrong.

One of the Muslim passengers, Kashif Irfan, told The Washington Post** the confusion began when his brother was talking about the safest place to sit on an airplane.**

“My brother and his wife were discussing some aspect of airport security,” Irfan said. “The only thing my brother said was, ‘Wow, the jets are right next to my window.’”

Irfan told the newspaper he thought he and the others were profiled because of their appearance. The men had beards and the women wore headscarves, traditional Muslim attire.

Irfan, 34, is an anesthesiologist and his brother is a lawyer. Both live in Alexandria, Va., with their families, and were born in Detroit. They were traveling with their wives, Irfan’s sister-in-law and Irfan’s three sons, ages 7, 4 and 2. A family friend also was traveling with the group to a religious retreat in Florida.

Federal officials ordered the rest of the passengers from the plane and re-screened them before allowing the flight to depart.

The family was upset that AirTran didn’t allow the Muslim passengers to book another flight. They eventually made it to their destination on a US Airways flight.

“The FBI agents actually cleared our names,” Inayet Sahin, one of the family members kicked off the flight, told CNN. “They went on our behalf and spoke to the airlines and said, ‘There is no suspicious activity here. They are clear. Please let them get on a flight so they can go on their vacation,’ and they still refused.”
Hutcheson said the passengers were given a full refund and are welcome to fly on AirTran now that the investigation is complete.

Hutcheson and a federal Transportation Security Administration spokeswoman said the pilot was right to postpone the flight.

**"At the end of the day, people got on and made comments they shouldn’t have
**
made on the airplane, and other people heard them," Hutcheson said. “Other people heard them, misconstrued them. It just so happened these people were of Muslim faith and appearance. It escalated, it got out of hand and everyone took precautions.”

One of the passengers removed, Abdur Razack Aziz, said he will consider a lawsuit.

Profiling or Misunderstanding?

I’d say it was a misunderstanding. FBI did clear their names, and requested the Airline to allow them back on.

So be careful what you say. Don’t even think about passing notes instead of saying it.

Re: Muslim passenger removed from flight!

Misunderstanding to begin with...

FBI did not profile them, but Airline refusal to board them again turned into profiling of some sort for sure.

Re: Muslim passenger removed from flight!

I hate to say this but I bet this happened because of appearances and jealousy.

Re: Muslim passenger removed from flight!

^^ explain the jealousy part

Re: Muslim passenger removed from flight!

I agree that appearance had a part in this whole thing. YET...

its a federal offense to make any kind of remark, comment or statement which can be construed in any way to be a threat to an aircraft or the people in it or to make passengers and/or crew to be frightened in any way. When the family started talking about where it would be "safest to sit", it raised eyebrows and concerns yeah? Once people became concerned, theres no way that the airline could seat those people on that flight. BUT they should have accomodated them on the very next flight available. Not sure why they didnt do just that ... but they opened themselves up for a nice lawsuit there.

ANYway, be really careful what you say in an airport or on an aircraft. Back in my college days, and this was long before 9/11...there was a guy in one of my classes who went to fly to florida for spring break. Gori guy. He was selected for "further inspection" which means he had to open all his bags and be personally searched...that made him mad and he started yelling "what...you people think I'm going to blow up the airplane or something?!!" and he ended up in jail for 2 days, parents called in and he was sentenced to 2500 dollar fine, community service and anger management classes.

You have to be SO very careful these days to never say anything that could even remotely be construed as threatening. Sadly, esp when you wear desi clothes....

Re: Muslim passenger removed from flight!

on a brighter note here....I;d like to relay an experience that I had when flying from Isl to NYC. It was a long flight and when we got off the plane there was a rude, obnoxious security guard yelling at all the weary passengers "Walk! Come on MOVE it!! GAD! ITs like herding a bunch of COWS!!".

I said nothing at the time but I was BURNING mad. Next day, I emailed the airport security office. Long story short, that guard was fired.

thats awful. maybe he mistook a bunch of fatties for cows and called them cows. it was awful on ur part to have him fired for such a misunderstanding. we sure are more than generous to give benefit of doubts to others when something bad happens to others [us not involved] but as soon as something bad happens to us, the whole of humanity goes down the drain.

Re: Muslim passenger removed from flight!

What an angry, sour person you are Saieen! Never have I seen you post anything positive on GS. How sad!

Anyway, when I wrote to the airline, I suggested a course of "sensitivity training" for the guard. He made it very obvious that he thought he could get away with his abuse because he saw the desi passengers as dumb animals. And the way things work in USA with HR departments and esp in the larger corporations, it takes a HUGE offense to get fired, and they looked into the matter in detailm not just taking MY word for it but seeking other witnesses. It was not the end result that I desired but it was actually nice to see that the airline takes abuse seriously. THAT was my point.

Thank you for toning down your response.

I am sure Saieen was sarcastic. Thanks MMo3 for sharing.

I remember once an afro american stood up before plane stopped at the door after taxiing and the flight stewardess said people keep their seats and its not a bus!!

He got mad and took her name etc. and promised to report. The argument kept everyone aboard for a while.

When in public service, professional behaviour needs to be maintained.

Re: Muslim passenger removed from flight!

Paranoid Americans. We desis should start using bleach cream and dye our hair and shut our mouths forever.

Re: Muslim passenger removed from flight!

Paranoid? hmmmm...ok so we had 4 loaded jets driven into skyscrapers, the ground and the pentagon....so by taking extra precautions I dont think that can be classified as paranoia. While I look for and am sensitive to discrimination of any kind, but most esp desis - I am also willing to accept some extra scrutiny in the name of safety yeah? Maybe its cause I hate to fly to begin with...but really, if someone/anyone makes any kind of comment that could even be remotely construed as threatening, you WILL face consequences yeah? But the vast majority of the time there isnt any problem. So lets try not to over-react in EITHER direction yeah?

That was an Inside Job to make it a reason to attack Afghanistan and then Iraq.
Don't wear desi clothes, yeah right. Btw I don't think anyone's wearing desi clothes in the picture mercenery posted so what you should have said was don't have an Islamic look while living in America.

These Americans were paranoid not because of 9/11 but the Fox News and other news they watch everyday on their TV. I should have said brain washed rather than saying paranoid.

Re: Muslim passenger removed from flight!

misunderstanding for sure but amends could have been made by allowing the families back on board, they had little children with them, a little sensitivity and common sense on the part of the airlines could have been shown. why punish them when it was a mere misunderstanding? what a scary experience for the 3 kids involved, sad.

Re: Muslim passenger removed from flight!

I read this article earlier - happy ending is all I care for. End of discussion.

Peace.

Re: Muslim passenger removed from flight!

Yes thats a much better, more apt description Hareem. The sad thing is...that many Americans, esp those who do not live in a metropolitan area, they have no idea what a Muslim really is or what Islaam is really about. They see all these scary news reports about OBL, beardie-Taliban-types etc and they think that anyone in that type of dress may be "one of those" yeah?

I didnt mean to imply that one should not wear desi clothes in America...but it does make you different, it does make you stand out from the crowd. And in some cases, it can have really bad consequences as it did for the unfortunate family on this flight...they were simply trying to find the "safest seat" on the plane - something I ALWAYS do lol cause I'm so scared of flying...and they found themselves in fear that they'd end up in Gitmo.

Its a very sad and sorry thing for sure. And the only way I know how to make things better is to make every attempt to educate everyone I can about the REAL Islaam, the REAL Muslims...yeah?

:hehe:

Re: Muslim passenger removed from flight!

^wine, its not a matter for laughter when its YOU who are singled out and worry that you're going to be put on the next special flight to gitmo yeah? And the only thing that can help prevent this from happening more often than it SHOULD...is to educate and spread the knowledge about who Muslims actually are and what they actually beleive.

Yep.

I don't know what I'm gonna do if similar "misunderstanding" thing happens to me and my family? May be I'll forgive them or may be leave the country but removing hijab is no option for me.

Re: Muslim passenger removed from flight!

Hareem, thats not what I was trying to imply...you should feel free and welcome to practice Hijaab. But you should also be aware, as I'm sure you are, that it makes you stand out in a crowd in USA...its unusual yeah? So you are that much more subject to scrutiny, not by security screeners per se but by fellow passengers who have been subjected to the "brainwashing" of the news media. So when they see a serene, peaceful and peace-loving type of Hijabi you have done a wonderful thing for the education of the "brainwashed public" yeah? But when they see a hijaabi who is asking for the "safest seat" then all of those overblown and threatening news reports plays into their fear and you end up with the situation that this family endured.

I'm not saying that its right or that its fair... It is what it IS...but for my part, even though I am not yet Muslim, I HAVE read and understood much so far and do everything I can to pass on the serene peace and goodwill of the religion to others.
