Music in Islam (merged)

Re: Is Music Haraam?

It is sufficient to point out that it IS an exception. That it applies (in some interpretations) under some circumstances and conditions is not relevant to the point…

Re: Is Music Haraam?

For Fret and Nescio's questions:

The word used in the ahadith of the Prophet (saws) doesnt mean "music", it means "musical instruments". This is what I found out the last time i was into this. So as you can see, the natural "music" (nightingale.. azaan etc), dont come under the same ruling.

Now the other thing: I find your reasoning ridiculous because if we are to look around us, everyone knows what we're talking about when we say "music". You guys KNOW the effect this music has. You know what it has evolved into.. You see the videos of the songs (are they not contrary to islam's teachings?).. you hear the lyrics (are they not contrary to islam's teachings??) .. you know that its going downhill everyday... and you still try to defend it by saying that music in itself is beautiful.

Notice what I said above. its about lyrics and the video, which are definitely not allowed. Which means music being produced today can not be defended at all (except if you're brain dead).

Re: Is Music Haraam?

^MTV is not the only source of music. There is more music produced today than what pop culture media throws at us.

Re: Is Music Haraam?

You can apply the same logic to clothes. Gosh, you see how people are wearing clothes these days, girls with their arses hanging half out and their “love handles” or whatever they call those bulges of fat hanging out right above their pants, and then you can see butt floss when a girl bends down if she’s wearing her shorts too small, etc etc.

Solution: We should not have clothes. We should ban all textile mills as well.

Re: Is Music Haraam?

No you cannot. Only YOU can apply such logic.

Re: Is Music Haraam?

PCG,

Seems like you have a comprehension problem. Someone asked why something as beautiful as music could be haram. I simply replied that it is not beautiful in a lot of places.

Sehar02,

So you will atleast accept for the time being that the music being thrown at us through MTV goes against Islam’s teachings? Because believe me, that is what most of the boys and girls here listen to, and most of the ones participating in the discussion. Beethoven and the singing of the nightingale ( ) seem like tangents, but I’ll get there once atleast this much is acceptec.

Re: Is Music Haraam?

god said no music ,no art , no dancing just pray to me whole day

Re: Is Music Haraam?

ammarr -- sure, there are plenty of songs/videos that have explicit sexuality, violence, disrespect that is against the teachings of most faiths. that is a separate argument from banning music itself.

Re: Is Music Haraam?

No its not beautiful in all places. But what you’re talking about is music videos. Music videos are made by video directors and heavily influenced by music producers. These people do not play instruments. Nor is the instrument getting up on its feet and saying “Hey, I’m your guitar, and you gotta listen to me, make a video with lots and lots of sex and the music YOU composed using me as instrument will sell like hotcakes”.

If people are abusing the music industry, that’s not the fault of the guitar, nor has the guitar enticed anyone to produce nasty videos.

Re: Is Music Haraam?

Yes you fail to understand clearly from the hadith and Fuqhis that the musical instrument itself (i.e. the Guitar) is responsible, the sex and profanity is just an add on.

Re: Is Music Haraam?

okay what is the punishment of listening to music ?

Re: Is Music Haraam?

Care to explain how the duff and the guitar is so different?

Re: Is Music Haraam?

IMHO, this thread represents as much as any other, that many Muslims put too much emphasis on hadith and not the word of God. It's like making it the religion of Muhammed instead of the religion of God. But it's not even that, it's making it the religion of what scholars have interpreted of what was reported by others of what Muhammed said.

Re: Is Music Haraam?

Exactly. And then practicing none of it.

Re: Is Music Haraam?

:rotfl: :rotfl:

Re: Is Music Haraam?

I have always asked exactly this same question.(cuz I hate the sound of duff)

Recently I heard on TV a mawlana say because duff is a very basic instrument so it is allowed in certain conditions, but string instruments are prohibited.

Re: Is Music Haraam?

^Songs with a strong drum beat always make me want to dance more than a song with a strong guitar. If music is prohibited because of dance, then the drums seem more problematic to me.

Re: Is Music Haraam?

guitar is responsible for sex and profanity? :(

Re: Is Music Haraam?

EXCELLENT point! Never thought of it that way, but that does raise serious issues over the haalal-ity of a duff, but the haraam-ity of the guitar.

Re: Is Music Haraam?

I was laughing because of your lack of knowledge in Islam. Even a non muslim knows Muhammad pbuh was teaching the Religion OF God. He did not have his own religion different from God’s :rotfl:

And his religion has been studied and passed down to Scholars. So follow what they say, because they know it better than you and I.
