from the site of Ayutullah Sistani: Question : Is it haram for a Muslim to listen to music? If yes , why please explain?
Answer : Frivolous and licentious music is haram. The crucial line is in it [music] being commensurate with the gatherings of entertainment and moral depravity.
I was speaking of Imams in this day and age…the Imams of the past were true intellectuals who didn’t go about calling each other Kafirs because they disagreed with one another on minor points…(the status of Music in Islam IS a minor point…)
There is MUCH more to interpretation and application of Hadith than a chain of translators…that’s simply raw material. The fact is, we’ve lost a lot of our intellectual traditions during the colonial era…
Now religion is no longer a way of thinking, it’s a badge of belonging…the latter requires no thought…just blind conformity…
I mean, consider Qaradawi. No matter what you think of his opinions, his approach seems honest and sincire. He does NOT have the “I am alim, therefore you shall not question” attitude, and explains himself well.
I suggest if people have a problem with his views, they post detailed counter arguments and not simply dismiss him as out of the fold of Islam because so-and-so said so…
A Sermon On The Last Friday Of Sha’ban On The Reception Of The Month of Ramadan.
"O People ! Indeed ahead of you is the blessed month of Allah. A month of blessing, mercy and forgiveness. A month which with Allah is the best of months. Its days, the best of days, its nights, the best of nights, and its hours, the best of hours. It is the month which invites you to be the guests of Allah and invites you to be one of those near to Him. Each breath you take glorifies him; your sleep is worship, your deeds are accepted and your supplications are answered.
Chalo Ji, people with false gods, ie mullahs and scholars, believe that music is haraam because their gods, the mullahs and scholars prohibited it. The real God does not forbid music in the Quran. Why do we need false gods like mullahs and scholars, God says that the Quran is complete, perfect, and fully detailed and it is easy to understand if anyone wishes to learn. Verses 54:15, 54:17, 54:22, 54:32, 54:40, all say "We made the Quran easy to learn. Does any of you wish to learn?" So when God says that He made the Quran easy to learn, did he only mean for 'scholars'? No, God made the Quran easy for all of us, IF we are sincere, He is the teacher of the Quran, not mullahs, not scholars.
music aint haram and will never be.
the question is : what exactly comes under the term "music"? if you can define tht properly...the discussion would be over. a lot of crap gets passed around as "music" when it actually isnt. people shud probably keep away frm such stuff but to go around banishing music other than the one tht involves "duff" or the drums reaks of stupidity to a great extent. everone knows that a lot of music that doesnt involve "duff" is brilliant in every sense...no point in banishing stuff like tht.
Point well taken, you see literally speaking music can be defined as **“The art of arranging sounds in time so as to produce a continuous, unified, and evocative composition, as through melody, harmony, rhythm, and timbre.” **(source marriam webster). But since generally we reffer to music as ‘singing along instrument or instrument playing alone’ that is why I did not entered into the defination.
I have presented my case based on the second interpretation of the word. ‘singing alone instruments or instrument playing’ is not allowed in Islam. Hope this will make things clearer.
The point is had playing the musical instruments been ‘hallal’ then there should have been no objection to thier behaviour, but since the instrument playing is not allowed even it it is done without any singing or if it is done alone.
May Allah (swt) has his mercey on such people and guide us all to the straight path.
i wonder why people argue about something very clear....
music is not allowed means its not allowed, then trying to find out what type is allowed and what type is not, and under what conditions and all is exactly what Islam forbids us to do....
as is commonly said, people these days dont want Islam to be applied on their lives, but want their lifestyle to be implemented on Islam....
I think everyone needs to figure out what their grounds for debate are.
If you believe that your opinion holds more value than the Quran.. the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (saws) and the actions of his companions - then you can definitely proclaim that music is allowed.
If you believe that you've submitted to Allah (swt), and that you wish to follow the Prophet (saws) and the righteous believers - then music is definitely not allowed.
Proofs for the above can be discussed ofcourse, but first - are you willing to accept that music can be disallowed by islam.
Fret Wizard,
You say that something as brilliant as music can never be haram. Then what about those who may feel that alcohol should never be haram? That homosexuality is not condemned in Islam? What then? You want to follow Islam, or what you feel is brilliant or not?
Music is not at all as clear cut as, say, fornication or homsexuality.
The fact is, the hadith are scatter shot on this issue, and the scholars (by their own design, and not because of sacred commandment) take the approach of treating Music as harram as a general rule, and anything that contradicts that is convienently taken as an exception.
It's amazing how the Quran explicitly condemns poets (26:224-26:226) , yet scholars bend over backward to defend poetry (probably because they are fond of it)...
^ some poets r clearly exempted from the condemnation....
Quran 26:24-27 And the Poets,- It is those straying in Evil, who follow them:
Seest thou not that they wander distracted in every valley?-
And that they say what they practise not?-
**Except those who believe, work righteousness, engage much in the remembrance of Allah*, and defend themselves only after they are unjustly attacked. And soon will the unjust assailants know what vicissitudes their affairs will take!
