Mushtaq Ahmed, the former Pakistan legspinner, has been named as assistant coach of Pakistan for the Champions Trophy according to the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).

Abbas Zaidi, a PCB director, confirmed to Cricinfo that Mushtaq had been appointed. “Yes, we have hired him for the Champions Trophy as assistant coach. For the moment the appointment is only for that assignment.”

Despite playing his last international for Pakistan nearly three years ago, Mushtaq’s high-profile successes with Sussex have ensured that he has never remained far from the Pakistan set-up, or the selectors’ thoughts. Last winter, he was recalled as one of five spinners for the squad against England; he wasn’t eventually used and by the end of the tour he was helping Pakistan out as an unofficial bowling coach. Eventually, Waqar Younis was hired as a full-time bowling coach later in the winter.

And though Mushtaq wasn’t selected for the squad to tour England in the summer, speculation was rife that he would be picked once Pakistan arrived, especially after the spate of crippling injuries their bowlers suffered. To many people’s surprise, he wasn’t chosen for any of the Tests, even though Danish Kaneria struggled throughout the summer. Instead, Mushtaq continued in his attempts to land Sussex a second County Championship title.

For now, Mushtaq is back in the set-up, if only for the solitary assignment. The PCB is not yet ruling out involvement beyond that and Zaidi added that the decision will be reviewed again after the tournament. “The appointment will be reviewed on a tour-by-tour basis after that.”

Looks as though this is promotion for Mushtaq Ahmed. He was a bowling coach before now he has become assistant coach. Maybe working towards becoming a head coach. What do you guys think of his appointment.

I think its not a bad idea as he has plenty of years experiece playing for Sussex and no doubt has worked with professional coaches. The coaching techniques and ideas he may have learnt can be useful for the team.

Also, considering the fact that Woolmer will not remain in the job for ever someone like him can take over the job in the future and this will provide him to get the necessary experience working under the head coach.

Re: Mushtaq Ahmed - Appointed Assistant Coach

Crap.....

You already have Bob and Wicky. Why do you need another coach and that too bowling coach? and that too Mushtaq Ahmed? and that too for one series? I you HAVE TO HAVE TO get him, just put him permanently with Bob, at least he will get trained under Bob for Good.

I guess Mushtaq currently is just getting free rides coz he is near to Inzi. I hope he can bring some good to the team.

Re: Mushtaq Ahmed - Appointed Assistant Coach

I don't think he is hired as a bowling coach as the team already has a coach for this. He is hired as an assitanct coach....

Re: Mushtaq Ahmed - Appointed Assistant Coach

^^ come on ..No way can Mushy be a full fledge coach...at best he can be a leg spin coach...call him asst. of what ever, only maybe becuase of the money they gave him, made him more senior then a "bowling coach" but..if woolmer goes, we need some one from the fielding arena to be head coach and can have other local people to coach on bowling and batting...

Re: Mushtaq Ahmed - Appointed Assistant Coach

I did mentioned this in another thread that Inzi is giving free ride to any one he likes, e.g Kaneria in the present ODI squad, when every one knew he is not going to play a single game. Arshad Khan with pretty much every squad whenever it was possible for Inzi, and at the same time, whoever told him the truth, e.g. Yasir Hameed, he showed him the door.

Now once again Mushtaq is hired as Assistant Coach, when PAK have NO REGULAR SPINNER in the team. In such a situation, I can only see one reason for hiring him and that is an IMAM for the team, if in case Inzi and Yousaf are batting at the time of JUMAAT then without any problem MUSHTAQ can lead the prayer in the dressing room. Similarly if every one is fielding, then still Mushtaq could lead prayer for extra players and big contigent of the PCB, especially in India most of them will be there to visit their kins.

Not good for cricket but may be useful for cricketers' life after death

Re: Mushtaq Ahmed - Appointed Assistant Coach

That is a point

You have BOB - a COACH
You have Wickey - a BOWLER
if you still NEED someone (which i dont think you do)
get a BATSMAN as assitant coach

Re: Mushtaq Ahmed - Appointed Assistant Coach

^^ cricketfan…although I am a maulvi too but I can’t resist the kick I get out of your suggestion… Allahu akbar :amamah:

Maybe they are preparing for a sudden resignation from Woolmer…if you haven’t noticed he is loosing steam in almost every consecutive interview he gives… Wallahu Alam

Re: Mushtaq Ahmed - Appointed Assistant Coach

I have long suspected that PCB wanted to appoint a suitable assistant coach to cover the language barrier among Woolmer and players.

I hope they got Woolmer's blessing for this appointment, and if they really did, it'd be a good idea to have Mushtaq present while Woolmer goes through his plans and works with players. Mushtaq can then reiterate/translate what has been instructed by Woolmer, as well as make sure that the playes are indeed working on it.

Not a bad idea, sort of like an assistant+translator for Woolmer. Of course given the nature of work, you'd want a professional cricketer as a translator and not a linguist.

Re: Mushtaq Ahmed - Appointed Assistant Coach

^^ you mean he knows better english then the other players...??? how bizzare...

Re: Mushtaq Ahmed - Appointed Assistant Coach

Senseless decision to appoint Mushtaq as an assitant coach. No way they should hire him as someone who would take over when woolmer leaves (Although you never know with PCB)

It is possibly a combination of 3 things. Mushtaq being close to inzi since the beginning and now even more closer becasue of tableeqhi connection, a translator (As Sig Dig mentioned) and possibilly to help Kaneria (however kaneria will probably not be playing in Champions Trophy.

PCB didn’t even bother to provide a sound justification of this appointment. What else we can expect from these dopeheads:grumpy:

Re: Mushtaq Ahmed - Appointed Assistant Coach

:D u are probably right.

Re: Mushtaq Ahmed - Appointed Assistant Coach

All valid and good points so far.....apart from Mushtaq who else could have been selected as assistant coach?

If you see other teams such as England they also have Kevin Shine as a bowling coach, Mathew Maynard as a assistant. I don't think there is any harm in having assistanct coach provided he is the right man.

What about appointing Afridi786?

Re: Mushtaq Ahmed - Appointed Assistant Coach

another stupid decision by the morons at PCB

Re: Mushtaq Ahmed - Appointed Assistant Coach

Mushtaq joins coaching staff for Champions Trophy

KARACHI (Reuters) - Pakistan leg-spinner Mushtaq Ahmed has been handed an assistant coaching role for next month’s Champions Trophy in India.

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) official Saleem Altaf said on Friday that Mushtaq had been hired for the tournament starting from October 7, but the contract would be reviewed after the tournament.

Pakistan’s head coach is former England player Bob Woolmer, who has held the post since July 2004.

“The appointment of Mushtaq was a board decision,” Altaf told Reuters when asked whether Woolmer was consulted.

“We have brought in Mushtaq since bowling coach Waqar Younis would only be available for a week of the tournament. He will be busy at our national cricket academy,” he added.

The 36-year-old Mushtaq, who has made 52 test and 144 one-day international appearances, was drafted into the test squad in the home series against England towards the end of last year, but did not play.

He was later appointed as bowling consultant in the one-dayers and than bowling coach for the series against India earlier this year.

He has been playing for English county Sussex for the last three years with considerable success, and there was speculation he would be picked for the recent series in England, but he was overlooked.

Pakistan lost the test series 3-0.

Altaf also said the Pakistan squad would set up a training camp in Jaipur, India for a week before it begins its Champions Trophy campaign on October 17.

“We are also planning some friendly matches before the tournament in India,” he added.

Re: Mushtaq Ahmed - Appointed Assistant Coach

If they really needed someone to take reigns after Bob it should've been Aqib Javed, Mushtaq is there perhaps for azaan and to take the squad for seh-rozas (3 day tours, tableeghi jamaat :D).

Re: Mushtaq Ahmed - Appointed Assistant Coach

When the Inzi retires then Mushtaq will have competition for this position for offering azaan etc...........

Maybe this position should be re-named to 'Religious coach'.:D

Re: Mushtaq Ahmed - Appointed Assistant Coach

Captain: Aaqib can be a wonderful bowling coach, but you'll probably agree with me that the Head Coach himself has a greater role than just pointing out weaknesses in one's batting or bowling. He has to formulate a plan and strategy in light of the analysis done on opposite teams. He also has to help the Captain make correct tactical decisions on the field by briefing him with his analysis. I don't think at present any of the Pakistanis are well equipped to fill that role. It's not because Pakistanis are inferior to goras. It's because our cricketers and cricket followers have been slow starters when it comes to developing an 'analytical cricket mind." This is more than evident from the difference in quality of commentary by Pakistani commentators vs the rest.

I was hoping that Sanjay Manjerakor or Dean Jones took up a coaching assignment somehwhere to pad their resume for 'experience," and then they'd make excellent coaches for sub-continental teams.

Re: Mushtaq Ahmed - Appointed Assistant Coach

 In that case they can hire Saeed Anwar a coach and will have complete tableeghee jumat. But I am little unsure about Musharaf support in this case, since Musharaf son Belal openly say his father DOES NOT like to pray and they openly display how Musharaf kisses his dogs, and Musharaf biography writer open said his love for Whisky and Johney Waker is not hidden from any one. In such case he may not support complete Tableeghee jumat.

Re: Mushtaq Ahmed - Appointed Assistant Coach

I dont know whats going on there, cause if they had appointed him as a bowling coach i would have agreed but to name his as an assistant... does not soung good. They already haav waqar as bowling coach so guess thats the only place where he could have been adjusted, but then point remains the same, why he as assistant ?

Re: Mushtaq Ahmed - Appointed Assistant Coach

He has coached junior team for a while with lots of success, but not as a bowling coach.
