Musharraf's treason trial

War of words among parties over Musharraf - DAWN.COM

ISLAMABAD: A war of words broke out between the Pakistan Peoples Party and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz on the one hand and Muttahida Qaumi Movement on the other on the issue of the purported heart ailment of former president General Pervez Musharraf on Thursday. Leaders of the PPP and PML-N issued statements against Gen Musharraf while MQM came up in support of the former president who reportedly suffered a heart attack while he was on way to a special court.

Soon after the former dictator was admitted to the Armed Forces Institute of Cardiology (AFIC) in Rawalpindi, Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari posted a rather sarcastic note on his twitter account which read: “I can’t believe this coward ever wore the uniform of our brave and courageous armed forces.” He further said: “All medical excuses must be verified by an independent board of doctors. I have an ouchy is no excuses (sic) to skip your treason case.” Bilawal said the proceedings of the special court showed that the defence team intended to fight the court, not the case.

In response to Mr Bilawal’s remarks, MQM leader Muhammad Anwar said the statement of PPP leader was disappointing and shocking for every Pakistani.

It is pertinent to mention here that MQM’s self-exiled chief Altaf Hussain was the first politician of the country who gave his remarks on Musharraf’s ‘heart attack’ and urged people to pray for his (Musharraf’s) good health.

**Mr Anwar said: “Those who are calling Musharraf a coward should know that Bilawal’s father and former president Asif Ali Zardari, in order to avoid his personal appearance in Swiss Court, had submitted a medical certificate claiming that he was mentally unfit and thus could not attend the court proceedings.”

The advisers of Bilawal should advise him that before maligning others, he should look into the role of his family members in politics, the MQM leader added.**

Defence Minister Khawaja Asif in a statement said that the government had not made any decision to send Musharraf abroad for medial treatment. “If he is medically unfit his lawyer should submit a medical certificate before the court,” the minister said.

He, however, said the government would accept any decision of the court, if made, regarding Musharraf.

The PML-N’s information secretary Mushahidullah said he was not certain about medical condition of Musharraf but the fact was that he had already tried to avoid the courts. “Musharraf’s retribution has started,” he added.

He said PML-N chief and Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif had faced imprisonment and was also tortured but Mr Musharraf was horrified without having any pressure.

Re: Musharraf's treason trial

Bilawal Bhutto Zardari is fast becoming Veena Malik of politics :)

Should know what sort of excuses his dad used dozens of times to avoid facing courts.

Also Musharaff might have made few blunders but he was brave enough to come back to country to face courts in addition to the terrorist threats. BBZ is only a twitter warrior who thinks he is brave because he either lives thousands of KMs away from country or behind many fort like walls when in Pakistan.

Petition filed against Musharraf’s possible exit from country - DAWN.COM

ISLAMABAD: A petition to restrain Gen (retd) Pervez Musharraf from travelling abroad to receive medical treatment was submitted on Friday in the Islamabad High Court, DawnNews reported.

The petitioner, Haroon Rasheed, who is the son of Lal Masjid cleric Ghazi Abdul Rasheed, requested the court to instruct the federal interior ministry to provide the former president with the best medical facilities in the country and bar Musharraf from exiting Pakistan, according to a spokesperson of the Lal Masjid Shuhada Foundation.

The petition further said Musharraf had several important criminal cases pending against him, including one relating to the murder of Rasheed Ghazi and sought to make the federal interior minister, interior secretary, Islamabad’s Inspecter General Police and the head of the Joint Investigation Team (JIT) DIG Kahlid Khattak parties to the case.

Rumours and speculations were rife following the interesting turn of events on Jan 2 which saw the former military ruler being rushed to a military hospital in Rawalpindi after developing a cardiac complication while en route to a special court in Islamabad for the hearing of the treason case under Article 6 of the Constitution.

The former dictator was seeking avenues to exit the country and the arrival of the Saudi Foreign Minister next week was linked to the issue, according to the grapevine.

Other skeptics believed that he was avoiding the embarrassment of appearing in a civilian courtroom.

An active swimmer and former army commando, Musharraf is not publicly known to have had any heart issues. The timing of the heart problem immediately sparked accusations that Musharraf was ducking his trial.

Musharraf’s spokesman Raza Bokhari said the former military strongman was conscious and “oriented in time and space” and was being examined by military doctors, in an emailed statement.

Doctors later ruled out a heart attack and said that further tests were being conducted while the former president was kept under observation at the Armed Forces Institute of Cardiology.

The court later granted the retired general exemption from appearing before it for the day’s proceedings and ruled that an arrest warrant was not issued against Musharraf for medical reasons.

The court had earlier ordered for Musharraf to appear before it and warned of issuing arrest warrants against the former president in case he failed to appear.

The order had come after the former military strongman had missed earlier hearings over the case citing security concerns over explosives found on the route from his residence despite summons issued by the special court formed to try him for treason.

Re: Musharraf’s treason trial

Yes and Zardari made a few trips to Dubai on medical grounds in the cover of the night. And there were rumors that he was not going to return either.

Also dont forget that Billoo’s mother Benazir never returned to Pakistan when the courts had corruption charges against her.

Billoo needs to look within his own family before calling the former chief of Army a coward.

Saudi Foreign Minister has probably come to Pakistan with a stick and some carrots. He may tell Sharif that you still have to clear dues of Sarwar Palace without which you won't be able to occupy it for another decade, if need be. But if you honour the deal you did with us and honour the deal Musharraf did with Riyadh, you may continue to be welcome in Saudi Arabia.

In the beginning of the struggle for the state of Pakistan, Maududi and his party criticized other leaders of the Muslim League for wanting Pakistan to be a state for Muslims and not as an Islamic state. After realizing that India was going to be partitioned and Pakistan created, he began the struggle to make Pakistan an Islamic state. Maududi moved to Pakistan in 1947 and worked to turn it into an Islamic state, resulting in frequent arrests and long periods of incarceration. In 1953, he and the JI led a campaign against the Ahmadiyya community in Pakistan resulting in the Lahore riots of 1953 and selective declaration of martial law.[SUP][9]](Abul A'la Maududi - Wikipedia)[/SUP] He was arrested by the military deployment headed by Lieutenant General Azam Khan, which also included Rahimuddin Khan, and sentenced to death on the charge of writing a propaganda pamphlet about the Ahmadiyya issue. He turned down the opportunity to file a petition for mercy, expressing a preference for death rather than seeking clemency. Strong public pressure from in and outside Pakistan, as well as,from the outside world, ultimately convinced the government to commute his death sentence to life imprisonment. Eventually, his sentence was annulled. .

**Looks like you forgot the "old Cock" Yahya Khan who was responsible for the breakup of country. Ayub Khan spent all his life in corruption and created his own corrupt politicians. His basic democracy was nothing but the biggest joke on political history of Pakistan. Zia also created first democracy on non-political basis, but later did not like his own illegitimate brain child and sent home the elected PM. Then he created PML(N), which is now ruling Pakistan. He also created MQM now demanding for separate province and country. Similarly Mush created another illegitimate party known as PML(Q).

All these dictators should have been hanged before their politicians are hanged.

You mean, Musharraf is super human who was in air on plane that was flying from Sri-Lanka to Pakistan and still he knew what is happening in Islamabad, gave order to army that they move against the government, and thus Musharraf in this way violated the constitution in 1999? … hmm, I think you should write a thesis on this subject ‘How to throw government while flying and without having any position to do that (on plane, one cannot even use mobile phone to know what is happening on ground)’.

I use first class language (that is, calling spade a spade) for third class politicians and their slave supporters.

Court to decide on Musharraf’s Nov 3 actions: Nawaz - DAWN.COM

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Saturday said that it was up to the court to decide if former military dictator Pervez Musharraf’s actions of Nov 3, 2007 amounted to high treason.

Musharraf is facing treason charges in a special tribunal for conspiring against the Constitution of Pakistan by imposing emergency and overthrowing the superior judiciary in November 2007.

The 70-year-old former army chief is the first military dictator in Pakistan’s history to face a trial for treason. His lawyers contend that the treason charge levied against him is politically motivated.

Speaking to a private TV channel on Saturday, PM Sharif, whose government was overthrown by Musharraf in 1999, said it was up to the court to decide whether the state and Constitution was abrogated by the military dictator’s actions.

He added that it was the court which would also decide whether or not the Nov 3 action fell in the purview of Article 6 of the Constitution, which speaks about high treason.

“Since the matter is sub-judice, so any comment from my side may be unfair. However, other than case’s merit, I do say that the real petitioners in this case are the state and the Constitution of Pakistan,” the prime minister said.

Sharif also observed that the case was not that of an individual. At this critical juncture of the history, it should be ascertained that whether “we are a civilised democratic state having our own constitution, law and judicial system,” he said.

“If every citizen is equal before (the) law, he (Musharraf) should also be answerable to the court. It is up to the court to decide whether he is innocent or guilty,” he added.

No immediate lifting of travel ban: official

Also on Saturday, interior ministry officials denied rumours that they were lifting a travel ban on the ex-military strongman, who suffered a heart problem on the way to his treason trial earlier this week.

Musharraf was taken ill and rushed to a military hospital on Thursday as he was being transported under heavy guard to hear treason charges against him at the special tribunal in Islamabad.

The former army chief was Saturday spending his third day at the Armed Forces Institute of Cardiology in Rawalpindi. His lawyer Ahmed Raza Kasuri said doctors were monitoring his condition in the intensive care unit. The sudden health scare was met with scepticism from some observers and feverish media speculation that his departure from Pakistan on medical grounds could be imminent. But Musharaf’s name has been put on an official “Exit Control List” (ECL) to bar him from travelling abroad, and a court in the Southern Sindh province ruled last month against lifting the ban.

“There is no intention to allow him overseas travel at the moment,” a senior official of the ministry of interior told news agency AFP.

He denied reports that Musharraf’s wife Sehba has filed a application with the ministry seeking to lift the ban.

“No fresh application has been filed by Madam Sehba, and it is clear that the travel ban on Musharraf is not being lifted. He won’t be allowed to travel abroad immediately,” the official said.

Musharraf’s lawyer Kasuri told AFP earlier on Saturday that the doctors have sent his medical reports to experts in Britain, who will determine his further treatment.

“The reports of the medical tests of General (retired) Musharraf have been sent to the experts for further examination in the UK,” Kasuri told AFP.

“The decision about his further treatment to be carried out in Pakistan or abroad will be taken in the light of the British experts’ opinion,” he said.

“Of course they (the Pakistan doctors) will give him excellent treatment. He is a former President of Pakistan and Army Chief. He is a high profile personality,” Kasuri said.

There has been speculation for months that Musharraf would be spirited out of the country before facing the courts in order to head off a potentially destabilising clash between the government and the all-powerful military.

Ministers have repeatedly said they will not lift the ban.

Kasuri had said on Friday that Musharraf’s legal team was expected to receive a report on his condition before the next court hearing on Monday.

According to fresh television reports, a board of doctors at the AFIC is due to finalise a report Saturday evening which will recommend whether Musharraf’s treatment should be continued inside Pakistan or abroad.

The report will be given to the former dictator’s legal team which is expected to present it in court on Monday.
