how can emergency shut doen free media, if there was none to begin with as some suggested, how can he become a dictator if he was a dictator before.
Are we collectively now realising that maybe things were not quite as bad before.

That appears to be the case.

These people don't know the true meaning of a dictator. Now, unfortunately they will.

flawed logic. he was always a dictator simply because he always appropriated to himself the ability to do what he has done NOW. if anything this vindicates the stance of those opposing him on the basis of him being a dictator, and not buying the facade of psuedo-democracy going on in Pakistan. he has always been what he is today, the absolute ruler of the Kingdom of Pakistan.

Exactly!
Now people will know what it was like before Musharraf first came to power in 1999 - no free media, no free judiciary, and no political opposition. This will make people realise that Musharraf did give Pakistani's all this freedom before this Emergency, and that were not there before 1999.
Re: Musharraf wasnt a dictator before, if he is now split: Police raids Aaj televis
the question of whichever freedoms "he" gave does not determine whether or not he was a dictator. the mere fact that "he" has the ability to "give" freedoms and "he" has the ability to take them away, for the past 8 years, should tell you that there is only one way of describing this political system: an absolute dictatorship, for the whole course of "his" rule over the country.

Two wrongs don't make a right..
Re: Musharraf wasnt a dictator before, if he is now split: Police raids Aaj televis
Musharraf should have gracefully retired this year.
For the first time in the history of Pakistan was the judiciary independent, which could have led to a fair and impartial election bureau and for the first time in Pakistan, free elections. Musharraf halted all that and I despise him for putting to end the transition to civilian rule.

Yup.

All dictators of Pakistan met with humiliating or bloody ends. Musharraf better beware.

Indeed, if histiry is reviewed, of the recent dictators one is in exile in sheikhs lap, one is like dhobi ka kutta between US-UK-UAE and Pakistan, one was blown in mid air, and one was lynched. The future for Musharraf may not be so bright.

So if this was teh first time in the history that judiciary was independent, we are saying that judiciary was not independent during the democratic rule of bhutto the first, bhutto the second and Nawaz? how were they deomocratic then? and if they were not democratic, then why are supporters of these people coming of the woodwork like cockroaches in the dark and pointing at these people as saviors of democracy

^ anyone who opposed Benazir and Nawaz on the basis on principles before, has to do the same for Musharraf. merely pointing to them means nothing.

it was good to see the judicary independant, but unfortunatly they abused there freedom like all other institutuions made free by musharraf.
pakistan needs musharraf to stay at the top and control these retards, the cj would have eaten up pakistan had musharraf not tooken him out.

always did, always will. opposing military rule does not mean that if the economy grew, we pull lame theories out of our behinds that it did not happen. or if press and media has the most freedom under the regime that ridiculous excuses are invented to claim that was not the case. you can be against military rule, while being against the current civilian alternatives, and you can acknowledge the positive developments in the last 8 years.
the issue as you can very well see is that many anti musharraf people were not merely anti musharraf but they were pro nawaz or pro benazir, but were too chicken **** to admit it like good little boys and girls. the hypocrisy that they blamed others of was solidy their own. Their true faces were seen as like good little serfs they started defending their landlord masters and giving them a free pass.
I am against military rule, and would like to see real leadership emerge from the people and be elected and represent the people who put them in power.

and what if people really elect NS BB or Altaf (and in some parts Chaudry Baradaran, Sheikh Rasheed etc).
while acknowledging the good of this govt. we need to be realistic and accept that these are the people that will be elected under absolutely unmanipulated elections.
the only shot we have at ever getting decent leaders is to allow the system to flush out these people. no one man is going to bring real leaders out. just doesnt happen.

i think Rebel X2 will prefer a military ruler rather than letting people elect BB/NS/Lotay again

well, lets steal a page from your playbook..
anyone who opposes musharraf on principles before, has to do the same for Benazir and Nawaz on the basis . merely pointing to tmusharraf means nothing.
criminals should not be eligible for political office, the political parties should have enough sense to not have the types of people as their leaders who destroyed all institutions during their tenure, or have been convicted of corruption cases while in office and of shady deals while out of office. The populace should have enough sense and should demand that the parties they support rid themselves of such figures.

one can be against both options, try getting that in your head. world is not black and white.

i absolutely oppose Benazir and Nawaz Sharif. As a citizen I realise that the only opposition I have a right to make is through my vote. I will never vote for them.

all prescriptive stuff. you are one person. YOU demand that parties rid themselves of such figures. If they dont rid themselves of such figures then vote for someone who is clean, anyone. vote for a protest candidate.
if NS and BB are legally not allowed to become PMs (as they arent at the moment) then they shouldnt! Ironically the same courts that Mushie mangled were staying the legistlation that was letting BB and NS legally off the hook :)
