Ive been saying it all along, khyber, what a nice name, reflects the 'true' identity of the great province, including all the ethnicities it comprises of, united we stand under the great khyber!

Imagine Punjab being called North East Province of Pakistan or Sindh South East Province. Pukhtoons deserve to name their province whatever name THEY please ie the majority of that province.
Khyber? Why does the Paki establishment fear the word Pukhtoon so much? Pak establishment has always suppreswsed nationalist feelings and encouraged the religious right for the very same reason, they fear nationalist forces which have roots in the masses.

Fart, read the post right above you, also, pakhtoons arent the only ethnicity, khyber incorporates them all.

The people of Hazara and other non-Pakhtun areas of NWFP suggested this a long time ago, hence it would be a consensus name.

Baluchistan population is divided 50/50 btw baluch and pukhtoons, Punjab has a huge seraiki belt, sindh has urdu speaking and other ethnic backgrounds, so why do they get to have their traditional, ethnic names and Pukhtoons get stuffed with NWFP? If the ppl of Frontier decide Khyber is the name they want then bismillah, but they sud also have the right to choose a name of their liking.

Refrendum is simple solution. Pakhtunistan or Afghania are good names, I think.

There is a difference between name of Punjab, Sindh, Baluchistan and name for NWFP. The difference is that, other three provinces were not given name but it already had the name. It does not matter if Punjabis are in majority or minority in Punjab, name Punjab was already there. True that some other areas like Saraki area got added to Punjab and became part of it but regardless, Punjab was a name already there.
As for NWFP, that name is a legacy Pakistan inherited and it would be unfair for people living in that area (with different ethnicity and language) if name of that province get associated to one ethnicity or language. So when deciding about the name of that province, two things has to be kept in mind. If the name given represents one ethnicity or language then people of other ethnicity or language living in NWFP should be given right to choose to have their own province too. If desire is to keep the province united then in case of referendum for name, each ethnicity should be given equal weighting with the possibility that new name could become becomes Hindkoistan, Kafaristan or Hazaristan.
Other best solution is to give name to the province that do not create objection from any ethnicity or language speaker in the province. Probably Khyber is reasonable name (if others living in NWFP do not object). Another name could be ‘Sarhad’ as it is even now and thus have some history. There are possibilities of other names too, as long as none of the people living there objects to it.

People of Punjab, Sindh or Baluchistan for that matter did not choose their names, nor did they have any referundums! Also, if you leave it up the pashtuns, they think Baluchistan is also 'their' province, so your example there doesnt prove squat!

^ It is not a matter of leaving it up to Pashtuns. A refrendum would involve everyone living in NWFP. They should decide what the new name of the province should be.

True, its a joke. Just let the provincial government make the change to khyber, to hell with referundums. You dont hold referundums to decide whether we need 'islam, musharraf or the change in name of a province'.

Naming Sarhad as Khyber is a simple formality. The renaming must be accompanied by concrete actions in economic sphere.
Frontier province (and the rest of Pakistan) is suffering from terrible highway system. Musharraf and Shaukat should start at rebuilding the badly needed infrastructure.
Without infrastructure improvements, the renaming process will simply be a tamasha (circus). You may name the province Cheechon ki Mallyan (a small village in Pakistan with a really odd name), and people will still be angry resulting in usual Mullahtic violence.

Khyber there already is khyber, I disagree. It should be either Afghania, Pashtunistan, or Pakhtunkhwa. If I am going to make a little compromise it would have to be Aryana (comprising of all pashtun areas).
