As PM Shaukat Aziz said yesterday, the emergency rule will contuniue as long as it is necessary.
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf Monday promised foreign diplomats that planned elections would be held and defended his controversial decision to impose a state of emergency, state media said.
But the military ruler, who declared the emergency at the weekend, gave no date for the general elections, originally due in January.
Musharraf told envoys at his official residence here that the “superior judiciary paralysed various organs of the state and created impediments in the fight against terrorism,” a local news agency said.
He accused the country’s independent media of helping the cause of extremists “by showing the gory scenes of suicide bombings that encouraged these elements to carry on with their heinous acts.”
“A number of decisions and deliberations have to be taken in view of the new legal situation very soon,” the news agency report said.
He urged the international community to understand the “ground realities” in Pakistan and the decision taken to stabilise the situation in the country, the news agency said.
Reports are now coming in that the govt has started negotiations with BB (and Fazlur Rehman) to pass a constitutional amendment that will a) Make the new PCO part of the constitution,** b)** Give a 4-month timeframe to the Emergency period i.e. till March 2008, and c) The setting up an interim govt to rule during the 4-month Emergency period. This govt-BB plan will ensure elections in March or April of 2008.

Mashallah. So, the President Musharaf and BB govt. could indeed become a reality sooner than people think?

You never know. I am sure she will only got to Islamabad once she is confident that she will get something concrete from the govt, such as her as Interim PM or one of her close confidantes.

US is pressuring Musharaf to hold elections. He would do that anytime as long as he remains as President and Army chief. It is a calculated move by him. He knows that he can deflect Western pressure by holding elections regardless of what happens to judiciary and constitution. He can count on creating new laws to allow him to remain in power from new legislature and judiciary.

The Govt is already in negotiations with BB and her PPP, which will probably result in a wide-ranging constitutional amendement being passed by parliament, before the National Assembly term expires on the 15th. Musharraf will get all he wants in this amendment, and so willl BB, while the power of the courts will be cut down to size.
The National Assembly session has been summoned for Wednesday, when probably an amendment to the constitution will be moved that will validate the new PCO, remove any legal hitches to Musharraf’s second term, and keep BB happy as well. Oh and it will formally retire ex-CJ Ifti and his supporting judges. God bless the sovereign parliament of Pakistan.
So after chitrol form US he is now going to hold elections as promised after trying to postpone it for a year. That makes one thing clear the whole drama was just against the judiciary. I wonder why People who were supporting Baghwandas are now quiet in these forums.
