Musharraf hits out at retired generals

Is it just me or Mushrraf is getting more and more paranoid by the day?

Musharraf hits out at retired generals

Pervez Musharraf of Pakistan on Wednesday night angrily hit out at the retired generals who this week said that they no longer had confidence in him, remarks that fueled western speculation that the president is losing the support of the army.

“They are insignificant personalities,” the president told the Financial Times in an interview on his arrival at the Davos World Economic Forum. “Most of them are ones who served under me and I kicked them out … They are insignificant. I am not even bothered by them.”

However, Mr Musharraf acknowledged that opinion polls had shown a significant decline in public support for him. But he was confident he could ride out the current political turmoil in the country, insisting he was prepared to work with any prime minister who comes to office after next month’s general election.

“I know that my popularity has reduced,” the president said.

But recent opinion polls showing that an overwhelming majority of the Pakistani public want him to leave office were “incorrect”, he said.

Asked if he could serve a full term as president, Mr Musharraf said: “Yes why not … If the people of Pakistan do not want me, well certainly that is what politics is, that is what democracy is about.”

However, he insisted that, under the Pakistani constitution, he could only be thrown out by a two-thirds majority of the country’s parliament.

Mr Musharraf insisted once again that Pakistan would have elections that were “free, fair and peaceful” on February 18. He said he would be prepared to work with a prime minister who came from the Pakistan People’s party, whose leader Benazir Bhutto was assassinated last month, or Nawaz Sharif’s Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz.

“I have no choice. According to the constitution, the president has certain powers, [but] the government is run by the prime minister of Pakistan,” he said.

At the same time, Mr Musharraf made clear that if the opposition won power, they would be unable to proceed with the argument that the president should be impeached because he held power unconstitutionally.

“I don’t care whether they like or not. I follow the constitution of Pakistan and I was elected according to the constitution of Pakistan. Anybody who says it was not done constitutionally is absolutely wrong.”

In the interview, the president rejected suggestions from western analysts that the Pakistani intelligence services were losing a grip on al-Qaeda supporting militants.

“The intelligence services are doing a good job,” he said, adding that the recent spate of suicide bombings were “an irritant”.

Asked if the wave of militancy could break up Pakistan, he said: “I would give zero per cent chance to that. But is it causing anxiety, yes indeed.”

He added: “There is a misperception in the media [that] everything is happening in Pakistan. The actual victory or defeat [of the militants] will be in Afghanistan.”

Re: Musharraf hits out at retired generals

Yes, its probably you! :p

Re: Musharraf hits out at retired generals

I doubt that. Mushrraf is the one who is having hard time listening to voices of sanity.

thats the way it should be

i dont condemn all military action within pakistan to combat militancy but its better to keep as much action outside of pakistan as possible.

the pakistani task is to seal the border and to prevent international terrorists from setting up permanent camps within its borders. so its unwise to undergo a long term low level war with your own soldiers (albeit unofficial soldiers)

the government and military establishment in pakistan are educated and learned to world class standards and they should be afterall they are running a country on the world stage. like they pulled off secretly building their nuclear weapons program they need to implement a strategy as precise to prevent internal warfare. especially a warfare which could totally decimate the whole country or one which leaves its bitter taste in form of ethnic hatred for years to come.

the united states has a flawed afghanistan policy and pakistan is running into the same trap

Re: Musharraf hits out at retired generals

So how much longer before he is ousted then? :)

Re: Musharraf hits out at retired generals

So now you agree that patrons and fellow thinkers of the taliban ideology like hamid gul are right?

Shaabash!!! :D

Re: Musharraf hits out at retired generals

The border can't be sealed like snap. The policy worked in our favor in the eighties against soviets but now it is to our detriment. One way or the other, Pakistan has to get inside again in afghanistan since when pakistan wants good relations ever with afghanistan, afghans backstab pakistan with our eastern neighbour [and USSR in cold war] setting up camp.

Afghanistan itself is the cause for its neighbours to get involved! Pakistan and to some degree iran should work together in fixing the awghan problem while shumali gook alliance must be told in CERTAIN TERMS that indian bs inside Pakistan through afghwanistan will make the Gooks ultimately responsible for what happens afterwards...

I mean the f*king country is a mess. Majority of the intellectuals left after the soviet invasion and the resultant fasadi 92-96 warfare. The place has no hope at all. Only karzai has to fall and the whole country will go back to its londa bazi raping ways!

Re: Musharraf hits out at retired generals

For a man to whom Kursi means more than Pakistan and he plunged the whole nation into crisis only to save his kursi, ex Generals mean nothing. Only one thing matters, his kursi, his kursi, and his kursi.

Re: Musharraf hits out at retired generals

the ways its going at the moment shumali gooks will be our better friends in afghanistan and they dont like us. post WOT afghanistan cannot be ignored because pakistan will still face considerable defence threats

Re: Musharraf hits out at retired generals

That is why I said we should not delink from the country since, unlike america, dono ki nata jurri atakti hai!

Re: Musharraf hits out at retired generals

What you believe Pakistan should be is different than what I and many others who are majority of Pakistanis believe Pakistan should be.

So, to you Musharraf cares about Kursi but to many of us, Musharraf cares about Pakistan. Fact is that Musharraf is too tolerant with retards and if instead of him it was me, than there would have been two choice for retards and that is, 'My way or grave's way' and I would not have tolerated BS from media too and would have made them pay heavily for any wrong reporting, even reporting that I would think is against 'My way'.

Re: Musharraf hits out at retired generals

^^That's why you're who you are and cannot be a good leader because 'Your Way' doesn't apply to the masses, while the media speaks for them.

Ohhh...so you do support dictatorial mentality....interesting.

Re: Musharraf hits out at retired generals

Very old saying: "A man is known by the company he keeps"

Re: Musharraf hits out at retired generals

Yes paranoid from terror sympathizers aka Hameed Gul and Aslam Beg? :)

Re: Musharraf hits out at retired generals

But is it reporting for the people when the news channels have terrorist-supporters and terrorists (ex. Ghazi brothers) being fully interviewed, so that they could get their sob brainwashing story across to the nation, thereby drowning the people in more extremist-sympathies, that quite honestly might cost them not just a civil war, but an international war (ex. Obama's oath that he'll bomb Pakistan once he becomes president)?

Does the leader of the state, in this situation, not have the right to shut down these TV stations? Is he a savior for democracy or a totalitarian?

I know in America, those stations wouldn't last a chance on air. And America's a democracy, right?

Re: Musharraf hits out at retired generals

um.....I have seen Al-Kaida's videos on CNN/ABC/FOX etc...through Al-Jazeerah and they'r not shut down?!

The news often interview serial killers to get their side of the story. There are shows specifically that go to probe and bring to the public's eye such individuals and what tempted them to do such thing, so that public may learn from it and be able to identify such individuals. Does that constitute as brainwashing the public? C'monnnnn now....

Re: Musharraf hits out at retired generals

You seriously have that much trust in the media? FYI, they never play the full Al Qaeda tapes here. They just show it playing on the background, mute his voice, and anchorwoman comes on and says "So, another tape has come out, with Osama Bin Laden in some unidentifiable area asking more muslims to join his jihad".

Please, they don't play everything he says. They know better than that.

Re: Musharraf hits out at retired generals

We won't spiral off topic here but yes your 'claim' is a dud. Media does what it is supposed to do, worldwide.

Govt. ought to work with the media, not shun it.

Re: Musharraf hits out at retired generals

If you're supporting TV networks that support terrorism, you effectively are supporting terrorism. Good to know where you stand on that topic.

And media lies all the time. I've seen it myself - American TV reporting/translating what a random Pakistani is saying, and the Urdu doesn't match up with the English language. Islamic muslim groups I've known have been misquoted all the time in local newspapers. Media f's up all the time. Its in its nature. That and it goes where the funding goes. I'd like to see Geo's accounting laid out for everyone to see.

Re: Musharraf hits out at retired generals

Haha.. it's funny how you make up your own notions, when infact i've said the total opposite. A little less paranoia would help you much.

ps: cheap shot! I dare you to quote me where i said i support inhumane acts in any way. Go on....

Anywhoooo now that i'm done babysitting!

I think the retired Generals know a thing or two about the armed forces and their opinion is just as valuable as the current Ex-General President Musharraf. If you can believe him, then why not them? They're of the same camp!
