Musharraf begged for Kargil ceasefire: Sharif

New Delhi: Former Pakistani prime minister Nawaz Sharif has claimed that he called for a ceasefire to end the Kargil war in 1999 after Army chief Pervez Musharraf ‘begged’ him to do so.

Sharif, in an interview for a book Gaddar Kaun, also scoffed at the pull out by the Pakistani troops from Kargil saying they had lost everything.

He admitted Pakistan made a ‘request’ to militants to withdraw from Kargil only to ‘show to the world’ that Pakistani troops had not occupied the icy heights in Jammu and Kashmir.

The fact is that when Musharraf’s misadventure failed miserably, this commando general came to me to get the war ceased at any cost,” Sharif told author Suhail Warraich in an interview for an updated edition of the book which was released in Pakistan on Friday.

The former premier said that US General Anthony Zinni’s book ‘verifies this claim of mine’. “His testimony clearly says that it was the army chief and not the prime minister, who wanted the ceasefire," Sharif said.

Sharif refuted Musharraf’s claims that international pressure over Kargil had demoralised him.

“It is an interesting claim. I was not demoralised by the international pressure. First, he begged me for a ceasefire and then bade me farewell at the Chaklala Airport for Washington,” the then premier said.

Sharif claims that after the first phase of his meeting with the then US President Bill Clinton, he came to know that India had recaptured Tiger Hill from Pakistani troops.

“You have lost everything already, now what should I talk about,” Sharif claims to have told Musharraf during a telephone conversation from Washington.

Sharif said that he made the announcement asking the Mujahideen to withdraw from the occupied heights at the advise of his military secretary to show the world that it were they who had captured the Karil peaks.

When the Mujahideen were formally requested to pull out from the peaks at a meeting called by the ISI, a militant commander asked “where this Kargil was. This triggered laughter,” Sharif said.

The former premier said that he appointed Musharraf as the army chief on the advise of defence secretary Iftikhar Ali Khan. ".

Khan told me that Musharraf worshipped me as his hero. He advised me to appoint Musharraf as the army chief," Sharif said.

Re: Musharraf begged for Kargil ceasefire: Sharif

nawaz sharif Good job humiliating you own conuntry.

Re: Musharraf begged for Kargil ceasefire: Sharif

This is not new. Everybody knows how much scared mushi was when india declares she is running out of patience over kargil.

India could have crossed the LOC and not only recapture remaining part of kashmir but also tiranga would have been on Islamabad. but war it triggered might have cost us about 10 years and for pakistan....they would have been in medieval period.

Re: Musharraf begged for Kargil ceasefire: Sharif

This is what he is best at, thats why they shouldn’t let the looser back,

Re: Musharraf begged for Kargil ceasefire: Sharif

Not that I want to bring you out of fairy-land but I have spoken to those officers who fought there.
Trust me being an indian you don't want to know how much damage was done to india.

Re: Musharraf begged for Kargil ceasefire: Sharif

He is telling stories just like he told the story to awam for 7 years that he DID NOT SIGN ANY PAPER AT ALL .... :)

Re: Musharraf begged for Kargil ceasefire: Sharif

What a great military leader. The dumbass general had no exist strategy. Even his own army officers can attest to that and have done so in Musharraf's free Media.

Re: Musharraf begged for Kargil ceasefire: Sharif

Yeah India could have crossed LOC and Pakis would have converted India into a huge lake coast to coast... Could have would have not have are just simple blah blah after the fact that simply don't cut it. India could have blah blah when pakis refused to hand over 20 Indian terrorist but then rest is history never ever heard 20 again.

Re: Musharraf begged for Kargil ceasefire: Sharif

Yep, its double dipping Tinds story reported by Indian media and followed by Paki..LOL...

Re: Musharraf begged for Kargil ceasefire: Sharif

so how many years before it is decided if :

  1. kargil was a blunder or master-stroke of brilliance
  2. was it an army op or jihadis
  3. was it govt sanctioned or independently done
  4. whose idea it was to start it
  5. whose idea it was to end it

Re: Musharraf begged for Kargil ceasefire: Sharif

keeps ppl guessing eh?

Re: Musharraf begged for Kargil ceasefire: Sharif

The only blunder as far as Kargil goes was that Pak Army didnt call in full air support...
Humiliating the Indians by grabing it in the first place is worthless if its not held on to in the long term...

Re: Musharraf begged for Kargil ceasefire: Sharif

how would calling in air support ensure ability to hold on to the position long term? are you suggesting air patrolling of the LoC positions?

Re: Musharraf begged for Kargil ceasefire: Sharif

LOL the Pak Army was so secret in its planning that it did not bother to take other cheifs into confidence on this misadventure.. so when Pak Army called the Air force ppl for supply missions the Air force personal said.. "we dont fly missions for jihadis"
and for the grabbing part.. wat part of pakistan did India Grab to make pakistan beg for a ceasefire?

Re: Musharraf begged for Kargil ceasefire: Sharif

How could they call for air support when Pakistani army was all the way claiming that these people are mujahiddin and have nothing to do with Pakistan army. Air support by Pakistan Airforce would have meant all out war for which our army was not prepared....

Kargil was the most embarrassing misadventure undertaken by our army in the history of our country. A lot of Pakistan army people who were killed in this misadventure were not even accorded state recognition...

The problem is mindset of these army generals. They think the world is run through tactical maneuvering.

Re: Musharraf begged for Kargil ceasefire: Sharif

Im suggesting that if Pakistan wanted to take over Kargil peak, they should have used all means at their disposal, which includes air support…

Re: Musharraf begged for Kargil ceasefire: Sharif

Thats the problem, they should have made it a formal war and not some proxy bull sh1t.
We should have taken full responability and sent in the Army... Once they had the peak, they shouldnt have allowed it to be taken back.

As far as not being ready, that would have to be seen...
