Murky politics hang over Bilawal’s entry into arena

Interesting, as I have been mentioning in the past that PPP is fast becoming irrelevant in Punjab’s politics. The main reason being the policy of ‘reconciliation’ which gives the impression of PPP being the B team of PMLN. This can only damage PPP’s constituency. In Punjab, its becoming PMLN versus PTI with the passage of time. Disregarding the blunders Imran Khan has conducted during the past month and a half, he has got a platform to penetrate to areas where he was not able to previously.

Parliament Watch: Murky politics hang over Bilawal’s entry into arena - Pakistan - DAWN.COM**

“What an irony!” Many in the Pakistan People’s Party are heard exclaiming these days. They feel distressed that despite having seasoned and battle-hardened leaders like Aitzaz Ahsan, Raza Rabbani, Yousaf Raza Gilani, Qamar Zaman Kaira and others, the leadership thought it fit to pin hopes on the young Bilawal Bhutto Zardari (BBZ) to revive the party’s lost fortunes.**

Granted his middle name still has emotional appeal for the masses but whether this inexperienced Bhutto can win same trust that his mother and grandfather were able to win is a question only time will answer.PPP has chosen a somber date, October 18, for his formal entry into the political arena. Seven years ago, on that date, a huge rally had greeted Benazir Bhutto at Karachi airport on her return from self-exile and was taking her home when terrorists struck her convoy, killing and wounding hundreds.

She survived the attack, only to be killed even more violently in Rawalpindi 10 weeks later.Agreed, it is hard for the PPP leadership to forget its past full of tragedies. Maybe PPP strategists want her son BZB to enter Pakistan’s murky politics riding a sympathy wave. But the question remains how far the wave can carry him? In recent history, the PPP has managed good crowds only on poor BB’s death anniversaries.More puzzling is the timing of BBZ’s launch into active politics. General elections are far off, in 2018. When the question is put to PPP leaders, those hailing from Punjab all have one response: “Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf is fast emerging as the main challenger to the ruling PML-N monolith. And only a Bhutto can help regain our lost political space in Punjab.”

In the 2013 general elections, PPP won just two National Assembly seats in Punjab in comparison with the 47 in the 2008 elections.A senior PPP leader from Punjab, who preferred to speak off the record, said that the PTI’s long march and street agitation have hurt not just PML-N. “We are also feeling the heat in our constituencies.”What he found more disturbing was that PPP leaders of Punjab are increasingly being asked by voters, ‘When are you going to join PTI?” They see Imran Khan as the only effective and combative opponent to the Sharif brothers.

A PPP office bearer, close to party co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari, said, “the party leadership is aware of these undercurrents and closely watching the situation.”In the recent PPP meetings at Islamabad, Lahore and Karachi, the leaders from Punjab literally begged BBZ and co-chairman Zardari to come to their rescue, according to the worried PPP Punjab leader.

Since the current political gridlock started building up in mid-August, the PPP, for all practical purposes, has become a mere appendage of the PML-N, both inside and outside the parliament. A former lawmaker from Punjab had heated arguments with Mr Zardari who was unwilling to throw BBZ to rough waters of active politics then.“We cannot just watch and wait for the PTI and the PML-N to settle their scores. That will leave the electoral fight to the two and the PPP will become history,” the PPP leader said.

Although it was a cameo appearance, he said BBZ’s visit to flood affected areas of Punjab brought smiles to the grave faces of PPP leaders of the province. And the young scion of Bhutto family has announced to spend more time in Punjab and supervise re-organization of the party personally. In an attempt to calm down disgruntled party workers, BBZ offered an unconditional apology to them in an open letter this week, leading that the loyalists stay with the party.“

Because of the PTI’s relentless campaign against the government, and targeting the PPP as well, we find ourselves caught a bit between the devil and the deep sea,” said a PPP office-bearer. “If we side with PTI, we will be accused by others of siding with the anti-democratic forces.”Notwithstanding the paradox, political analysts generally say young BBZ must focus on governance in Sindh and help improve lives of his fellow Sindhis before thinking of making big in politics. With 24/7 media coverage and strict scrutiny by opposition parties, performance will be the only yardstick for winning people and their votes to the PPP.

Re: Murky politics hang over Bilawal’s entry into arena

Some people on this forum have been portraying during the past three years as if it's an issue between PPP an Pti (the party which has never held power on the federal level). I'd reiterate again that most of PPP supporters would prefer Pti over PMLN anyway. Similarly the party's soft peddling with regards to PMLN has damaged the party. There were already very few PPP supporters in punjabs urban area, I can assure you that the numbers have further dwindled during the past three years. Imrans policy of trying to get PMLN and PPP clubbed together seems to have paid off.

Re: Murky politics hang over Bilawal’s entry into arena

Ppp have not option they have to support nawaz else there corruption cases is out. Bilwal should have targeted urban areas of punjab but he failed miserable by calling them burger class though himself is nothing less than burger. In future ppp might be losing sindh also they way they are going the other day i was reading innews lyari said enough of ppp we dont want them again.

Re: Murky politics hang over Bilawal’s entry into arena

PPPs predicament:

1) if PPP supports Pti they'd be called anti democracy

2) if they support PMLN they'd be called their b team

as you can see PPP is in worse position

Re: Murky politics hang over Bilawal’s entry into arena

....And they cannot even play the role of opposition because of the muk mukka between Zardari and Nawaz Sharif. As this means, no NAB investigation would be done against PPP top dogs, Nawaz Leeg won't push the Swiss authorities to bring back the looted wealth of the nation, as the Showman Sharif promised.

All in all, it must be getting quite frustrating for the second tier PPP workers - who want to have some face in the politics - to support their masters' truly nasty and immoral politics of muk mukka because it saves them from facing the justice whilst their political careers are at the verge of complete extinction.

But it is correct that PTI's policy of creating a situation to expose the idea of indistinguishability between Noon Leeg and Zardari/Bhuttos (add Mullah Fazlu as well) has worked really well.

Re: Murky politics hang over Bilawal’s entry into arena

Forget about Punjab, how popular is this young 'marsoo marsoo' Wadera Prince amongst the diverse Urban communities of Sindh?

Re: Murky politics hang over Bilawal’s entry into arena

PPP is over

Re: Murky politics hang over Bilawal’s entry into arena

There was a reason why PMLN as opposition (while giving PPP the full opportunity to rule) kept doing some gimmicks to try convince their voters that they are not with PPP. Which included the provocative speeches of Shahbaz, Punjab card and setting up CMs camp office in minar e Pakistan as protest for load shedding etc. PMLN was able to convince its voters that they are not with PPP and declared that Pti is there to divide the votes to bring PPP back to power. This threat convinced a lot of people to vote for PMLN. PPP was ineffective as a government and is proving to be lousier as opposition. Anyways 'sanu ki'.

Re: Murky politics hang over Bilawal’s entry into arena

daanishwar** Billoo BhoTTTT** [short for Bhutto] :hehe:

Re: Murky politics hang over Bilawal’s entry into arena

I think PPP is done.. done for good. It'll never come back again UNLESS PML(N) and PTI do some political blunder while in the mix of their fight. The shrewd politicians like khursheed shah will be keen to jump on such opportunities.

Re: Murky politics hang over Bilawal’s entry into arena

Learn from history.

They said the same thing since the 1980s. The PPP is not dead. What it is, is lost.

And if the PPP does die, that means the only secular party in Pakistan at the national level is no longer relevant. I am sorry that is very worrying and not a good thing.

Between Taliban Khan, the PML (N) and JUI/JI. What national parties are left in Pakistan?

Re: Murky politics hang over Bilawal’s entry into arena

^ not anyone's problem. PPP itself is responsible for their demise. Are they talking about any issue of national importance in recent times?

Re: Murky politics hang over Bilawal’s entry into arena

Here comes a Jiyala !

Re: Murky politics hang over Bilawal’s entry into arena

Not a jiyala.

Re: Murky politics hang over Bilawal’s entry into arena

I know who is he

Re: Murky politics hang over Bilawal’s entry into arena

As far as secularism is concerned in recent years the divide between right and left has also muddied. We have seen alliances of PPP with religious parties as well as PMLQ and tacit understanding with PMLN. Even this excuse won't work.

Re: Murky politics hang over Bilawal’s entry into arena

last night the best statement on a talk show ppl who used to say Taliban khan have exposed themselves by pointing at women participation in dharnas which shows who actually have Taliban approach. but haters keep calling Taliban khan #keeptrolling](http://www.paklinks.com/gs/usertag.php?do=list&action=hash&hash=keeptrolling)
