Mumbai - Places to visit

If you only have one day?

What is a must-see? We’ll have a company car or taxi so transport in not an issue.

And what is a good place for shopping if you’re alone?

Re: Mumbai - Places to visit

Marine drive, Gateway of India, Chowpatti.
Check with your contacts in Mumbai. They will be in a better position to guide you.

Re: Mumbai - Places to visit

Thanks denada, HallaGulla and Army. These places are non-desi friendly right. Any good places for desis to visit to see real Mumbai?

What's special about Haji Ali and Prabhadevi Ganapati Mandir, just so that I can explain it to others as well.

And good non-desi friendly places to eat indian food?

Army, that heera-panna is from that old ad, 'panna ki tamana hai ke heera mujhe mil jai' hai na? Hated that ad and the guy.

Re: Mumbai - Places to visit

I recently visited Mumbai and we went to the new Phoenix Mall - it's really good...lots to do all under one roof - like shopping and food....

I went to Haji Ali 2 years ago and it's very close to Heera Panna and Crossroads shopping Centre......
It's way too full of tourists and to be perfectly honest the walk along the bridge is a bit hectic and you get pestered by the stall holders and beggars....

For food....I love China Garden in CrossRoads...as well as Delhi Darbar ( the grand road one is better), Shalimar and also I have heard that Badeh Miya (behind Kolaba is good)

Go to Chowpati in the evening for the Kulfi................

Have a good trip!

Re: Mumbai - Places to visit

i saw VT, Gateway of India, Colaba Causeway, Marine Drive, Chowpatty, Hanging Gardens, crawford market.
what area of bombay will u be staying in? do u have contacts/family there?

u must have the bombay bhelpuri, ask them to make it without the tamarind chutney - or u may get sick. u must also try the bombay vada pav. oh and suleman sweets… they are awesome!! here’s the link:
http://www.sulemanmithaiwala.com/profile.html - u must try their aflatoon products..

i loved shopping at Inorbit Mall… they have the designer shops and an awesome home decor shop, u get the most beaut stuff there, i think it was called homestyle or somet like that. chk out a boutique called Anokhi, they have some really nice kurtis.. what kinda shopping are u looking to do?

i spent the weekend at the beach at Murud-Janjira which is abt 4 hrs drive from Mumbai. it’s really really really beaut… it’s not Goa, but an adequate compensation.

i really don’t think u need to visit Haji Ali, it’s very crowded and lined with beggars and all, it’s quite sufficient to photograph it from the curb. Nehru Planeterium, i don’t think that’s a big deal coz west mein we have better ones. Elephanta Caves, i heard they are really dirty now, and was dissuaded from going there myself.

i can put up more info for u tonight insha’Allah when i have more time.

have fun!!!

Re: Mumbai - Places to visit

Don't forget to visit baaraa haandi non veg restaurant :)
It has been featured on Discovery channel.

Re: Mumbai - Places to visit

Great info. We'll be staying at some place called 'Near Chinmayanand Ashram, Powai Mumbai'. I'm def. having all kind of street food, don't mind getting sick for a day or two :o My colleague doesnt want to visit places groweded with beggers.

As for shopping, dresses and jewellery.

How do I plan our day from Powai to get most out of our day?

Btw. what would be a nice gift for a hindu Bhiramin fam?

Re: Mumbai - Places to visit

I have heard that there is a really good imitation jewellery market called "Kutlary Market" or something.
For Kurti's and stuff there's a really good selection at Pantaloon (which is in the Phoenix Mall as well as in Central Mumbai near Maratha Mandir Cinema - thats the cinema where they still show Dilwale Dulhaniya Lejayengeh!)
Also, WestSide in Colaba is really good for Kurti's and separates - I bought some really unique stuff there and it's really reasonably priced!

Re: Mumbai - Places to visit

You could buy a small Lord Ganesh.

Re: Mumbai - Places to visit

use maasaahaari na banao :smilestar:

Re: Mumbai - Places to visit

I think buying a ganesha as a gift is not the greatest idea. as they will have it already... lot of them..
You can gift them anything that you would give to your anyother friend. Some sort of memento will be the best....

Re: Mumbai - Places to visit

Go to see Elephanata caves and Madh island if you can.

Re: Mumbai - Places to visit

Perhaps this site will help.
Its got good places, but the poverty & infrastructure hurts

Re: Mumbai - Places to visit

Oh yeah!

Re: Mumbai - Places to visit

I wish you could've stayed longer though, that ways you could've gone to smaller places closer to Mumbai like Alibag etc which will give you a totally different taste of Mumbai altogether from what you will see in Mumbai in general. Mumbai life in general is very fast paced, everyone there ( sorry for the generalizations as I come from a different part of India :D ) just looks, in unki naak ke seedhe me ! But small places like the one I mentioned are known for their laid back life. Such small places are also renowned for their authentic 'Konkani' dishes and seafood there is absolotely amazing. Anyways, Halla Gulla said it, Gateway of India is a must visit, so is Chowpatti !

Have a brother there, PM me if you need more info, am sure he can give you way more info and directions than I can, if you want I can send you his number as well.

Enjoy and welcome to Mum-bhai.

Re: Mumbai - Places to visit

I went to Chowpati - There's more than one Chowpati, I had golla gunda and pav-bhaji there and took lots of pictures. A mental guy started following me so didn't try gol-guppa.

I didn't like HajiAli, that place smells bad and we hardly saw any beggars in Mumbai except near Haji Ali and dhobi-ghat. Dunno why people insist on visiting dhobi-ghat. Hanging garden isn't worth the time either, if one must see a garden, visit the Hiraanandani one. Actually the whole hiranandani area is worth a visit for shopping, food and for time-pass. Gateway of India was fine, we went there early so it wasn't too crowded.

I did stay longer than the others, two extra days :o) Went to Dombiville (sp?) and saw so many different people on my way down. On my way back, we took a short-cut near the domestic airport, I guess I saw the real Mumbai in a couple of hours. Somehow I didn't feel that anyone in Mumbai was living a fast life, on the contrary, everything and everyone seemed to move too slow.

I was extremely disappointed to learn that you can't buy good dresses in Mumbai (compared to Pakistan), I guess I've visited all big malls and shopping centers in Mumbai, from Paneri to Nirmal lifestyle, places like Inorbit charges you an arm and leg for nothing.
