Mulla who was arrested trying to flee in burqa granted bail

DAWN.COM | + Pakistan | SC grants bail to Red Mosque cleric Abdul Aziz

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s Supreme Court ordered the release on bail on Wednesday of an Islamist cleric who has been held since just before soldiers stormed his Red Mosque complex in 2007 to clear out gunmen, a lawyer said.

The mosque had for years been a militant hub in the heart of the capital with links to Pakistani Taliban strongholds in the northwest of the country near the Afghan border.

More than 100 people were killed when commandos stormed the complex after a week-long standoff in July 2007, sparking a surge in militant attacks on the security forces that has intensified in recent months.

‘He has been granted bail, charges have not been dropped, as yet,’ said Shaukat Siddiqui, a lawyer for cleric Abdul Aziz.

Aziz, caught trying to slip out of the Red Mosque dressed in a woman’s burqa during the standoff with security forces days before the commando assault, has been kept under house arrest on the outskirts of Islamabad.

Siddiqui said Aziz would be released after posting 200,000 rupees bail in an anti-terrorism court.

There were 27 cases against him. Bail had been granted earlier in 25 of them and one had been dropped, Siddiqui said.

After troops took control of the complex they recovered weapons, including machine guns, rocket-propelled grenades, AK-47 rifles, landmines and hand grenades.

Al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden’s deputy, Ayman al Zawahri, called for revenge after the assault on the complex which also housed a madrasa, or religious school for girls and young women.

Does it mean he can run around the country and cause more trouble? Or would he be put under house-arrest? or just free with eyes on him?

Re: Mulla who was arrested trying to flee in burqa granted bail

lol. so he had the deal done with the govt.
not bad ea!

Re: Mulla who was arrested trying to flee in burqa granted bail

CJ Ifti bating for the taliban side once again :k:

Re: Mulla who was arrested trying to flee in burqa granted bail

Can someone please explain to me what is going on??

Why the heck would you want to release someone like this guy when terrorists are essentially overthrowing the state?

Re: Mulla who was arrested trying to flee in burqa granted bail

^ You have to understand the goals of the ISI qabza group to fully appreciate these events. Zardari & co are merely puppets now.

Re: Mulla who was arrested trying to flee in burqa granted bail

^^^ The govt had 2 years to bring him to trial, convict him, but it failed. You cannot lock people up for indefinite time. So, if there is anyone to blame here its the govt & not the justice system.

Re: Mulla who was arrested trying to flee in burqa granted bail

this is where we fail , with all the evidence, his speeches, his action govt still couldnt do a case, i guess we wont wake up untill 10-20 bombs go off in a day and or these bas????? roaming around islamabad still we would ask whether drone should continue or not its like did chicken came first or an Egg?

Re: Mulla who was arrested trying to flee in burqa granted bail

You expect our court system to convict someone in 2 years? I know of cases that have gone for 2 decades and not come to any conclusion. Terrorists need a quick military/civil tribunal to judge, convict/execute or release if innocent. They can't be sent into the regular court system.

Re: Mulla who was arrested trying to flee in burqa granted bail

sounds to me like someone's secretly rooting for Qazi courts where cases are decided rather rapidly. :D

Re: Mulla who was arrested trying to flee in burqa granted bail

Rather amazing. Being granted bail is an individual right and part of the legal process of any country. Hell you expats should know very well that murderers and rapists get bail in the US and UK. Why would this guy not get the chance either?

More importantly I am happy the rule of law is being implemented and obeyed. About time it started to happen in Pakistan. If anything our problem is linked to the attitudes reflected in the posts above. No respect for law and order.

Re: Mulla who was arrested trying to flee in burqa granted bail

lol apologists.

Re: Mulla who was arrested trying to flee in burqa granted bail

Hmmm........So ISI is involved in his bail as well.
First they were involved in the attack on mosque
Then they are involved in his bail
Tomorrow they will be involved in " To be announced Later "

Members of a certain political party (or terrorist organisation) blame ISI/establishment much more than even India itself.

Re: Mulla who was arrested trying to flee in burqa granted bail

i dont think it has any thing to do with ISI but surely musharraf and shaukat aziz allowed them to grow to avoid attention from the lawyers movement untill they became monster and this is what happened in SWAT.

Re: Mulla who was arrested trying to flee in burqa granted bail

On the other hand Junaid, people blame Musharaff for killing innocent people in Lal masjid. There is so much hatered amongst Pakistanis and most call his actions as the biggest blunder.

What is bigger blunder???
Taking an action against them or doing it too late????

Re: Mulla who was arrested trying to flee in burqa granted bail

CM, right to bail is not an absolute right and is usually at the court's discretion. many US states don't allow bail for certain offenses and for others it is at the court's discretion. But nice try.

Re: Mulla who was arrested trying to flee in burqa granted bail

No, I'm rooting for a secular court system that actually works. These Qazis don't know a thing about justice. Anywayterrorist taliban have immunity from qazis.

Re: Mulla who was arrested trying to flee in burqa granted bail

SO many terrorists, or MQM bot bailed-out.. what difference would one MUlla will make...

Re: Mulla who was arrested trying to flee in burqa granted bail

While your statements are valid. They do not at any point invalidate my statements. Rather they can be taken together.

And by any chance do you have the one ring?

Re: Mulla who was arrested trying to flee in burqa granted bail

look, you claimed that there's nothing surprising about abdul aziz being granted bail since bail is an "individual right" in most legal systems. Point is, bail is not an absolute right, it's granted at the court's discretion given the court's view of the severity of the crime and the level of evidence against the accused. So it's pretty safe to say this decision shows the SC's bias towards the Lal Masjid criminals.

Re: Mulla who was arrested trying to flee in burqa granted bail

A quick question. Where do I state its an absolute right?
