Muhammad Amir, bookie Majeed confess to spot-fixing in court

Amir should be banned for life time Enough Said

**LONDON: Pakistan Fast bowler Muhammd Amir has confessed to his involvement in spot-fixing during Pakistan’s test series in England last year. The bookie who set up the fix, Mazhar Majeed has also confessed in court.
Sources said that the young cricketer had submitted a confessional statement in a court in London.

The spot-fixing scandal was initially exposed by the now-closed British tabloid “News of the World”.

The tabloid had alleged that Amir and fellow bowler Mohammad Asif deliberately bowled no-balls at specific times during Pakistan’s 2010 tour of England in return for payment from a betting syndicate.

The News of the World alleged that an agent affiliated with some of the Pakistani players, later identified as Mazhar Majeed, had accepted a bribe from an undercover reporter Mazher Mahmood for information that Amir and Asif would deliberately deliver no balls at specific points during the match, information which could be used by gamblers to make wagers with inside information (a process known as spot-fixing, compared with match fixing to predetermine a match result).

In the video posted by News of the World, Majeed, was shown counting out the bribe money, and promised that Amir would be Pakistan’s bowler for the first over, and that the third ball of the over would be a no-ball delivery. Amir did bowl the first over, and on his third delivery from the over, bowled a no-ball delivery.

Commentary described the delivery as a “massive overstep”, a good half-metre beyond the popping crease. Majeed also predicted that the sixth delivery of the tenth over would be a no-ball, and the ball, delivered by Asif, was also a no-ball delivery.

It is believed that their confessions will not affect the spot-fixing cases being heard against fast bowler Mohammad Asif and then skipper and opening batsman, Salman Butt.

Re: Muhammad Amir, bookie Majeed confess to spot-fixing in court

Aamir claimed he did not do it for money but was pressurized into doing it.. Interesting!

I hope his ban is reduced as a result considering his age.

Re: Muhammad Amir, bookie Majeed confess to spot-fixing in court

Idiot, why didnt he confess from the beginning and co-operate with ICC.

Re: Muhammad Amir, bookie Majeed confess to spot-fixing in court

^ because he thought he would get away with it :)

Re: Muhammad Amir, bookie Majeed confess to spot-fixing in court

from the knowledge about his confession so far..............too little, too late

Re: Muhammad Amir, bookie Majeed confess to spot-fixing in court

^ thats right! but all part of 'growing up' phase for him ;)

Re: Muhammad Amir, bookie Majeed confess to spot-fixing in court

he did it because he knew he'll be convicted. this way, he is expecting a lighter sentence and some reduction on his im posed ban.

Re: Muhammad Amir, bookie Majeed confess to spot-fixing in court

Its all lawyer's game to lessen the term. But here is the sad part, the whole cricket world will have a big smile saying, "werent we saying they did it when they were denying earlier"..

The misery of Pakistani cricket still continues..

Re: Muhammad Amir, bookie Majeed confess to spot-fixing in court

ICC ban has nothing to do with Aamir's confession...that ban of 5 year will remain in effect.

Aamir's confession is an attempt to get a lighter treatment during criminal prosecution.

Everyone except Pakistani nation knew that these *******s did it....if one more incidence of match fixing with credible evidence comes out of Pakistan cricket, ICC should seriously consider banning Pakistan from international cricket. Enough is enough!

Re: Muhammad Amir, bookie Majeed confess to spot-fixing in court

spot on

The original punishment (5-year ban) will stand and Aamir will still have to serve out the remaining period (4 years) of his ban. He deserves it..

The criminal prosecutors have no legal authority to overrule ICC judgement..

Re: Muhammad Amir, bookie Majeed confess to spot-fixing in court

No no, he didn't do it, he didn't confess, he was forced to confess by ......

sigh

Re: Muhammad Amir, bookie Majeed confess to spot-fixing in court

I wonder what Salman Butt has to say now. There is no limit to that guy's crookedness. He should be in the government.

Re: Muhammad Amir, bookie Majeed confess to spot-fixing in court

Still a positive development and means Salman Butt and Asif are in serious potty. I think Butt will not attend the hearing and will remain in Pakistan; he will be found guilty in his absence and sentenced to prison but wont be in the UK so will never serve the sentence!

Re: Muhammad Amir, bookie Majeed confess to spot-fixing in court

I hope he comes to UK and they throw him in jail. pathetic character, liar to the core and a club standard batsmen.

Re: Muhammad Amir, bookie Majeed confess to spot-fixing in court

Agreed

Re: Muhammad Amir, bookie Majeed confess to spot-fixing in court

If I am ICC, the only way I will be even considering shortening amir's ban is he comes to me and spills it all out.

  • Every cricket fan who has followed cricket for a while knows that spot/match fixing has existed in Pak cricket team for a very long time, infect it is same common as corruption in Pak.

  • So, amir who got caught for that one incident,** MUST NOT** have done it for the first time, he must have been either involved in other incidents or have heard about other player's involvements in other games (The most disturbing one to me was Pak's collapse in Galle 2009, where Moyo and Butt handed the game to SL)

So coming back to my main point, the only way I (if I am ICC) will shorten amir's ban is if amir comes to me and tells me about other incidents and player's involvements. I would also look for a deep corporation from him with anti corruption unit as even if amir is not directly involved in other incidents (less for a minute assume that) then still he would have learned little bit of how people like MM and other bookies try to entice people into spot fixing, just the same way as I, myself have never had to bribe police, the technician from telephone company to fix any problems with my telephone line, to get a driver license in Pak, to get some paper moved from one desk to another in any civil services office in Pak, to make sure that my post office delivers my package that has my electronic gadgets/cd player etc etc sent from abroad....I KNOW other people who bribed above people to assure that those services were delivered to them and i have heard on** HOW THEY gave those bribes** and how the under the table system works.

So, I will need amir to tell me about how under the table deals happen in Pak cricket among cricketers and bookies, so that that knowledge can be used to educate both anti corruption unit and future Pakistani cricketers....and if he is not willing to share that with me, then the rat gets no sympathy from me.

Re: Muhammad Amir, bookie Majeed confess to spot-fixing in court

Didnt Govt of Pakistan took made the Guarantee that these 3 will be present in UK to attend hearing ?

Re: Muhammad Amir, bookie Majeed confess to spot-fixing in court

Government gave assurance but knowing Salman Butt that was purely an assumption on my part.

Re: Muhammad Amir, bookie Majeed confess to spot-fixing in court

Salman Butt will not go to the hearing. He would be a total fool to do so. Time for CPS to ask Rehman Malik to expedite him. :k:
