In most of the cases it is a major risk and you can not control that. The best you can do is, manage the risk properly and cautiously, make an educated guess based on that person's dealing with others. Character is what matters the most, other things are secondary.
Unless you have known someone for a LONG time, there always is a risk of them pretending to be what they are not - and that applies to women as well as men.
