Movies and TV shows with violence and nudity

What are you thoughts on kids, or yourself, watching movies and TV shows with sexuality or violence in them? I remember my aunt wouldn’t let her daughters watch stuff that had kissing in it. Her daughters were probably about 11 and 9 at the time. My parents, while they wouldn’t encourage it, wouldn’t really care, especially now that I’m older.

I would probably change the channel if my parents were there just because of the awkwardness…

An interesting movie that came out was The Dark Knight. It was batman, and is marketed towards kids with happy meals etc, but it had a very dark and gritty theme to it. While violence was not shown, it was implied and was often brutal. Many parents complained about the movie and how it was too dark. I can see where they are coming from and that superhero movies usually attract kids, but personally, I would have preferred if the movie actually showed the violence.

Me personally, I watch shows like The Sopranos and Spartacus (please do not watch if you are easily offended lol), and movies like Borat and Inglorious Basterds, and while I wouldn’t want my kids watching stuff like that at a young age, once they are old enough, I wouldn’t care.

So what do you think about kids, or yourself watching stuff like that? Do you avoid sexuality and violence? Or just sexuality? Or neither?

Re: Movies and TV shows with violence and nudity

My parents will allow those small kisses here and there in a movie, but if there's a full out scene, automatic channel change or forward.

I was watching 300 and didn't know there was a boobie scene.. Of course my dad walks by during the boobie scene..

Re: Movies and TV shows with violence and nudity

Haha awkward! I don't even watch movies like that with my parents.

So your parents are ok with you watching that stuff but as long as they're not there? Is it just sexuality or violence too? I feel that as a society, we are so desensitized to violence that it's not really considered a big deal.

Re: Movies and TV shows with violence and nudity

No, I was watching it alone in the living room, and I didn't know there was a nude scene. When it happened, my dad walked by to get a glass of water or something. It was pretty damn awkward though lmao

Violence is different, violence is more free, but if it's too graphic, my mom and sister will just leave the room.

Re: Movies and TV shows with violence and nudity

i am a mom of a 5 year olg girl and 6months old boy.It May sound that i am a very old lady ,but i can tell u that it seems like yesterday when i was going thru that phase of being obsessed about movies. My parents were very cautious about our choices of movies, i dont know why but there was something in there upbringing that we(me and my siblings) cudnt imagine of offending them in any way and cos of sheer admiration for them we never watched such movies at all, and used to fast forward if there wud b any scene involving sexuality...gradually it became our habit and scenes like that became disgusting for us.Even now when i am all alone ,and can watch such scenes easily........u wont believe it but i change channel(on tv) or skip scene(if watching dvd).I am planning to raise my kids in the same way. Now one can see that there is nudity in even cartoons. My daughter allow to see baby tv, which is very nice chanel for kids. But i'll never be very stern or tough with my kids otherwise they'll start watching it in my absence

Re: Movies and TV shows with violence and nudity

i'd avoid as much as i can but there is hardly any good series without violence and nudity except Due South[even that's not quite recent], i wouldn't worry about kissing coz it's quite common in this society anyway and my kids are already used to of watching couples kissing so t doesn't surprise them though i don't have a tv and my kids watch selective things on dvd or iplayer and so do i.....the most graphic series i've seen so far is Dexter in my opinion but the violence doesn't shock me at all, it's the sexuality that makes me a bit uncomfortable.

Btw, I watched first 15 minutes of Spartacus and gave up, I always hated movies and tv series with roman themes. There was this mini series "The Pillars of the Earth" set in medieval times and I loved it.

Re: Movies and TV shows with violence and nudity

I am addicted to watching crime thrillers and they can sometimes be a bit graphic which I don’t mind as long as I’m watching it alone. And yes it is very awkward to watch very romantic scenes with family.
I don’t think kids under 14-16 should be allowed to watch violent/sexual movies or even play violent video games etc. Go build stuff with bob the builder or something! :vivo:

Re: Movies and TV shows with violence and nudity

Never cared about the violence, but I'll just change the channel if there is nudity just because its so awkward if you are with family.

I agree with Barbie that kids under 14 shouldn't be allowed to watch sexual or violent scenes.

The RATINGS are there for a reason you know.

Re: Movies and TV shows with violence and nudity

Although, in Pakistan, its a totally different story. Last year, when the suicide attacks were at their peak, even 5 year old children were talking about them. I know a kid who was afraid of going to the market because of that. And he was just 8. That's terrible.

Re: Movies and TV shows with violence and nudity

oh you don't know the stats of kids being exposed to violence and sexual images in west.

i've noticed that some desi parents don't mind bollywood songs watching with their kids but when it comes to gorays they quickly change the channel. I think they know the limits of bollywood but gorays are unpredictable but still I hate it when I see little girls dancing on sheela and munni.

Re: Movies and TV shows with violence and nudity

This is precisely why I hate watching movies with parents, or even siblings if there's nudity involved. All the best shows have violence, language and nudity. Dexter, True Blood, South Park etc. Same goes for movies, you can't have a funny one without the R-rated language.

Re: Movies and TV shows with violence and nudity

When we were young, we'd fast forward/change the channel if nude scenes came up. Violence wasn't really an issue. I hardly watch TV or movies anymore. As for the kids now, i.e. nephew, nieces, I'll try to avoid showing them violence (and nudity goes without saying). However, I leave that mostly up to the parents. Though I don't really watch TV or movies in front of them, I do play video games, which can get pretty violent. My brother doesn't let my nephew watch stuff like Ninja Gaiden, but less graphic stuff like Devil May Cry or Halo hasn't been a problem.

Re: Movies and TV shows with violence and nudity

When I was young nudity was never a problem. The satellite channels we got were all arab, Indian and Pakistani and nudity wasn't as common (or maybe it seemed that way to me). These days its like every other show and movie has nudity. Violence never really bothered me, my younger brother also plays games like GTA 4 all the time.

Re: Movies and TV shows with violence and nudity

Well such is the case with modern Movies and television, with regards to violence I think back in the good old days I watched some seriously awesome films most memorable among them are a few very rare films where the Actors actually took a real beating:e6:… often losing teeth and breaking bones and you can see it all on screen… But as for Nudity I think it was very rare in older generations cinema.

Modern times have produced many more graphic movies and personally I find most of them repulsive, however they really dont compare with the stuff that passed before them. Nudity is a big no no in my household but violent films and television is debatable. Certainly I would not watch a brutal fight with the Wife or any other female of the household, but among brothers or friends then everything from the Classic War film to Saturday Night Fight Live and UFC ets are all okay.:faris:

Re: Movies and TV shows with violence and nudity

I remember when we used to be in our early teens and somewhat allowed to watch R-rated movies once in a while, we'd assign the remote to the eldest in the group of cousins/siblings and as soon as kissing/lovemaking scene would start (bound to), he or she would announce for everyone to close their eyes while it was being fast forwarded cuz you can always tell whats going on even then and when it was over we'd be asked to open our eyes again.
Now well, we just look at each other awkwardly or stare at the ceiling while it's getting fast-forwarded.
If the entire movie is themed on sexual and explicit content then I wouldn't watch it.

Re: Movies and TV shows with violence and nudity

Yeah most good shows have nudity in them. And Spartacus is way over the top, but it's pretty good. You should watch Rome (mini series) much better and more politically focused, but the violence and nudity is ever present, even more so because it's British. If you like Medieval themed shows you should watch the Tudors, I hear it's good.

I agree but what do you guys think about The Dark Knight like I mentioned above. Batman is bound to attract kids but the movie implies some pretty violent scenes.

That's fair, but you guys still forward through sex scenes even as adults? I don't see much harm in adults watching something like Dexter or The Sopranos. I mean, that show had nudity and swearing, but if you read some of the stuff online about the symbolism in The Sopranos, it blows my mind that they put that much thought into it.

So the consensus seems to be that desis don't mind violence but will avoid nudity. We're kind of hypocritical aren't we? I mean, is a kiss really worse than a man getting impaled or something.

Re: Movies and TV shows with violence and nudity

LOL i know i remember watching the Titanic with my nani jaan and didn't know there would be an A$$ scene in it. And when it came she put her dubatta on my face :D but i still saw the nude scene through the dubatta.

Re: Movies and TV shows with violence and nudity

hahahah LMAO.

Re: Movies and TV shows with violence and nudity

Word.

My dad was hilarious. So sometimes you’re watching a film and then a kiss or something comes on, my dad would just clear his throat and be like ‘Oh I have to look at the XYZ schematics’ or ‘I forgot I left my papers in the car’ and just walk out of the room. I thought that was amazing. I’m sure he did it to just be like Errr this is dodgy but that just meant I wouldn’t be disturbed while watching it :hehe:

Ahahaha! My Dadi just goes ‘Horay Ki Ki Karde Ne Aj Kal Eh Munday Te Kuriyan and speeds up her Tasbih’ :hehe:

Re: Movies and TV shows with violence and nudity

lol..funny stuff

I watched titanic twice in the theater back then. Once with my mom and siblings. Then another time with my dad and siblings. Mom sent us out to buy snacks. And with dad, I just inspected my shoes with profound interest.
