Re: Most Evil Women in History
I was thinking about evil women of sub continent, but couldn't think of anyone except for Mughal queen Noorjehan who was most controversial and powerful women of Mughal era. Besides her all the other women in subcontinent history (be it Razia Sultan, Chand Bibi, Jhansi ki Rani) have been portrayed positively.
After reading your post for Soorpanaka, I remembered some wamp characters of Indians soaps, which were named after evil women from Mahabharta / Ramayan. How about Mandira, Mainika, etc. Who were they?
Good question. Will try to reply from faint memory
Mandira - I believe she was the hunch back lady in Ramayana, who poisoned Dasaratha's youngest wife Kaikeyi's mind. Years ago, while Dasaratha was atwar, his chariot had a leak of some sort. kaikeyi plugged that leak with her hands (dont ask what Kaikeyi was doing on that chariot and what I mean by chariot leaking - as kids we just accepted things)
After the battle was won, Dasaratha told Kaikeyi - you aske me any boon, and I will grant it.
years passed by. Kaikeyi forgot all abt it. She loved the elder wives Kausalya (Rama's mother) and sumitra (Laxman, Shatrughna's mother) and loved all 4 boys as her own.
Madri reminded her of her boon amd told her to demand of the king that Kaikeyi's son Bharatha be crowned king, and Ram sent to vanvaas.

Re: Most Evil Women in History
Now let me try to answer who Menaka was.
During the old days, Maharishis would go to tapasya for tens and thousands of years. They would invoke Shiva or Vishnu or Brahma - and after thousands of years, one of the big three would appear before them and grant them special powers. Indradev always used to get threateneed by the powers these Maharishis would get. Once, when Durvasa Maharishi (I think it was Durvasa Maharishi) was deep into penance, Indradev sent some upsaras - one of them being Menaka I think - to disrupt and distract Durvasa. The plan worked. Once Durvasa realized what happened, he cursed Menaka.

STA, ye us zamane ki baat thi jab sitare wala channel ek waba ki tarah ghar ghar phela hua tha.. Majbooran, na chahte hue bhi mubtala hona padta tha. Baqol Momin:
Main wohi hoon Momin e mubtala tumhe yaad ho ke na yaad ho…
I remember once when Government banned Indian channels, hamare cable wale ki shamat agai thi. Women from all the houses were ready to discontinue cable TV services just for sitare wala channel.
Thanks God, wo daur apne mantaqi anjaam ko pohuncha.

What happened to Menak after such curse.

Again a current affair issue.

Durvasa had a reputation for a very hot temper. I dont recall exactly what the curse was. But Menaka trembled with fear and asked for forgiveness - and Durvasa took the curse back. So all was well at the end! Except the 10,000 years of penance went to vain, and he had to start all over again!

Good catch - I am pretty sure the British end polygamy. But the hole in that hypothesis is that polygamy exists for Muslims - so I am afraid I will have to defer to someone else for correct answer.
Re: Most Evil Women in History
Katherine Knight - She is still alive though - but she is evil!
The first Australian woman to be sentenced to a natural life term without parole, Katherine Knight had a history of violence in relationships. She mashed the dentures of one of her ex-husbands and slashed the throat of another husband’s eight-week-old puppy before his eyes. A heated relationship with John Charles Thomas Price became public knowledge with an Apprehended Violence Order that Price had filed against Knight and ended with Knight stabbing Price to death with a butcher’s knife. He had been stabbed at least 37 times, both front and back, with many of the wounds penetrating vital organs. She then skinned him and hung his “suit” from the door frame in the living room, cut off his head and put it in the soup pot, baked his buttocks, and prepared gravy and vegetables to accompany the ‘roast’. The meal and a vindictive note were set out for the children, luckily discovered by police before they arrived home.

PS: I think you know something about Sri Lankan history. While we are discussig about characters from Ramyan in this thread, can you explain us why Ravan who is considered as bad guy in India is liked in Sri Lanka. (I’ve heard/ read that somewhere)
Re: Most Evil Women in History
And what is th link between Agricultural Land and polyandary and polygamy. This phenomena was / is very common in Arabs belonging to desert.
Re: Most Evil Women in History
limited agricultural land means they dont want to divide further

You are not the first person to ask me that...some thought that Sri Lankans worship him...it is not true at all..I honestly dnt know how it all started (that ppl think we like him).
Sri Lankans consists of 4 religions :
1.Buddhism
2. Christianity
3. Islam
4. Hinduism
None of those religions like or promote Raavan - the Buddhism is a way of life - some buddhists worship hindu gods
Christians and Muslims will have nothing to do with Raavan
Hindus - look at Raavan as evil - so they will not like him either...
No Sri Lankan I know has ever said anything that even remotely suggests that they think of him in a positive way.....
