NEW DELHI, India (CNN) – Around 1.2 million children are believed to be involved in prostitution in India, the country’s federal police said Monday.
Ashwani Kumar, who heads the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), told a seminar on human trafficking, that India occupied a “unique position” as what he called a source, transit nation and destination of this trade.
India’s home secretary Madhukar Gupta remarked that at least 100 million people were involved in human trafficking in India.
"The number of trafficked persons is difficult to determine due to the secrecy and clandestine nature of the crime.
“However, studies and surveys sponsored by the ministry of women and child development estimate that there are about three million prostitutes in the country, of which an estimated 40 percent are children,” a CBI statement said.
Prostitution in pilgrim towns, exploitation through sex tourism and pedophilia are some of some of the “alarming trends” that have emerged in recent years in India, it noted.
Authorities believe 90 percent of human trafficking in India is “intra-country.”
I wonder what percentage it carries in the GDP of india, almost 10% of the population is involved in this business!!! what would be the number of people who get effected by the activities of these 100 million people!!!
India does have some serious domestic issues after all!!!
its not like that but in terms of poverty india has alot than pakistan it can be due to population but it is there and you would know the difference when sometimes in future you visit pakistan…
i would like to say it is common in pakistan and it can come near to it if multiply percentage with total indian population.
^ FYI, India’s Human Development Index (HDI) is higher (0.61) than that of Pakistan (0.56)
The HDI combines normalized measures of life expectancy, literacy, educational attainment, and GDP per capita for countries worldwide. It is claimed as a standard means of measuring human development—a concept that, according to the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), refers to the process of widening the options of persons, giving them greater opportunities for education, health care, income, employment, etc. The basic use of HDI is to measure a country’s development.
I don’t know how you came to the conclusion that you did
Our population is curerntly 1.2 billion..... so 1 in 10 is involved in human trafficking???
:D
As always - the fun never ends on this site :)
Well it clearly says that an Indian Minister reported these figures and it's on CNN which is 'generally' considered reliable, though of course biased! So why do you have trouble believing it?? Prostitution is a grave problem in India. Why else do you think they are struggling with the HIV epidemic?
Isn't it, almost 10% of ur population busy in buying and selling of human beings.. only a wise indian can smile at it..
i wonder how much this adds up in the GDP of INDIA... i am sure it does have some contribution...
If anyone in his right mind thinks that 1 in 10 in India are involved in human trafficking then I have the right to freakin laugh at them and their brains.
Now lets dig a bit deeper. What exactly is 'human-trafficking'? If this definition
involves the kids who are made to beg at traffic lights + the girls who are sold into
prostitution + the horrible "muta" marriages of hyderabad where young girls are effectively one-night brides for wealthy arab sheikhs, then there is NO WAY 100 million people involved.
BUT - if you also add up the "clients" for prostitutes, then the figure might approach a few million at best. Besides - the way I understand human trafficking is people (organised gangs mostly) who attempt illegal smuggling of people (like for employment) or attempt to thrust kids into illegal activities.
If these numbers add up to 100 million in your mind, then go get yourself checked.
PS: I think when the bureaucrat mentioned this figure he must have included all the above activities PLUS the number of males who visit prostitutes (one time as well as regular). THEN the figure starts to make some sense.
