Eight Indian states account for more poor people than in the 26 poorest African countries combined, a new measure of global poverty has found.**
The Indian states, including Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal, have 421 million “poor” people, the study found.
This is more than the 410 million poor in the poorest African countries, it said.
The Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) measures a range of “deprivations” at household levels.
Developed by Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative (OPHI) with UN support, it will feature in the upcoming UNDP Human Development Report.
The measure assess a number of “deprivations” in households - from education to health to assets and services.
“The MPI is like a high resolution lens which reveals a vivid spectrum of challenges facing the poorest households,” said OPHI director Dr Sabina Alkire.

55% of India's population poor: Report

NEW DELHI: India's abysmal track record at ensuring basic levels of nutrition is the greatest contributor to its poverty as measured by the new international Multi-dimensional Poverty Index (MPI). About 645 million people or 55% of India's population is poor as measured by this composite indicator made up of ten markers of education, health and standard of living achievement levels.
Developed by the Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative (OPHI) for the United Nations Development Programmes (UNDP) forthcoming 2010 Human Development Report, the MPI attempts to capture more than just income poverty at the household level. It is composed of ten indicators: years of schooling and child enrollment (education); child mortality and nutrition (health); and electricity, flooring, drinking water, sanitation, cooking fuel and assets (standard of living). Each education and health indicator has a 1/6 weight, each standard of living indicator a 1/18 weight.
The new data also shows that even in states generally perceived as prosperous such as Haryana, Gujarat and Karnataka, more than 40% of the population is poor by the new composite measure, while Kerala is the only state in which the poor constitute less than 20%. The MPI measures both the incidence of poverty and its intensity. A person is defined as poor if he or she is deprived on at least 3 of the 10 indicators. By this definition, 55% of India was poor, close to double India's much-criticised official poverty figure of 29%. Almost 20% of Indians are deprived on 6 of the 10 indicators.
I am not sure what to say, Shah. indians are quite successfully working on making Pakistan another African country at a very fast pace. Maybe those living abroad should come to Pakistan to get a grip of what I keep repeating several times over these forums. Maybe it is time to focus on the ‘state of slaves’ that we are being forced to become & do something ‘sane’ to undo those iindian aggression & terror of all kinds against Pakistan rather than focusing on how badly iindia treats her own population. We can focus at that once we have control back into our own hands which we have given away to indian hands due to our own stupidity & naivety. It is not a joke the inceasing number of ways in which they are burning down Pakistan.
That exactly is the point I was making a while back here.
india has left all their poor population to survive upon foreign aid programmes to india while they spend their own monetary resources for buying all kinds of military & defence / spy systems to cause terror on their neighbour's soil & around the world instead of spending the same on providing roof for those living under the sun & in the slump. They constantly non-stop advertise their population's poverty through their own & international media & organization so that all the foreign aid programmes can be used on them instead of spending any portion of their own financial resources on the largely muslim poor population.

if pakistan would have not indulged in millitancy in india ,india would not have needed those trillions of money for defence and could have eradicated the proverty.pakistan is not doing any good to itself as they are also bearing the brunt of the millitancy.more than 300 people are getting killed every month.
Bhidnians I know it hurts but India's poverty level is too high. It's really embarrassing to have the majority of the country living in poverty lets face the fact and move on, no need to bring Pakistan in.
