As for the majalis well this "more drama less substance" attitude isn't specific to these lectures as you've pointed out. Its .

I completely agree, thats what I meant by khateeb in the second part of that sentence, i was talking about jummah khutba at various masajid i have been to, or some speakers i have seen and theyw ere for all diff sects and scghools of thought, shia sunni deobandi barelwi etc etc but their screaming and shouting type of approach was a turn off, I totally enjoy the lectures from the imam of my current masjid, i look forward to his friday khutba.

i know this totally off topic but just out of interest, from your experience what would you say makes the lectures so interesting and enjoyable apart from the charismatic personality of the speaker?

Rhia

applicability to our lives, direction, something to think about. Some of the recent memorable lectures were similarities and differences between islam and christianity and what it means. Raising your sons and daughters in an equitable manner, responsibilities to your communities (not just muslims but neighbours etc etc).

Topics where the speaker can relate it to our life, our issues and challenges, see how things that ppl do culturally are not right, e.g. ppl forcing who their daughters marry..an issue in UK. etc etc.

They look at the topic in historical context, why something is important, how it applies to us today. what can we do..etc.

compared to them a lecture which only sayd, you are bad, u dont follow religion u dont pray, u are not a true beleiver, there are people dying because people like you have lost imaan etc etc.... after the 3rd time it gets really annoying. anyways maybe we can starta new thread on that topic and get other people's input too.

I totally agree to this.

Thanx Mr Fruadia for replying and i agree too. I was interested in sharing a few actual "transcripts" or ways and actual examples of how people have said/done certain things, that we have individually been impressed by with respect to some of what you have outlined. hopefully at another time.

How's the imam of your current masjid...what makes you look forward to his khutba....just curious....:)

Recently I have been listening to a moulana which is totally different from the moulana i listened to before.

Different speakers....different impressions...:)
