Gov’t Tests Placing Monitoring Bracelets on Immigrants
National Public Radio is reporting that the Department of Homeland Security has placed electronic monitoring bracelets on the ankles of 1,700 immigrants as part of an experimental programs that allows the government to track them 24 hours a day. The bracelets have been placed on a group of immigrants who have never been accused of a crime but whose immigration status is being challenged by the government. In one case, an immigrant from Belize has been ordered to stay in his house from 6 at night to 6 in the morning. If he tries to sneak out of his Minneapolis home, his ankle bracelet sounds an alarm at a national computer center in Indiana. The experimental program is expected to last six more months. After that the Department of Homeland Security will decide whether it will order all non-citizens applying to stay here to wear the electronic monitoring device.
It won't happen. They can test, hem and haw about the right thing to do, but it will never happen. That will violate the rights of the people and that is not constitutional. GWBush seems bound and determined to try everything and throws it all out there but not everything will swing. This won't, trust me.
In order for these people to be wearing one, they had to sign their rights away, which unfortunately most do because they think to say no means they will be kicked out, which is incorrect, but most believe and they are afraid to get a good lawyer.
Hopefully, now that it is getting attention (since things like this happen in silence, a tool and pointer of a government doing bad things), things will change.
minah -- Maybe not. But I think its really stupid that the government plays on the peoples emotions in such a way- and even more ridiculous when the people seem to go along with it- a lot of the times.
All these anti terrorism laws, ideas, actions - some of them are just so silly its not even funny.
Great Idea. We need to know where criminals and thos ewho are in the country illegally are at all times. Never again another 9/11. No friggin way...I agree with MQ though..she should stay in Canada. :p
When I do go to the States again I will make sure Im far away from matsui. I dont trust him. Hes a fishy character.
Another 9/11? Im sure there wont be. But maybe the Americans are scared due to their actions for the last few years. They’re not exactly more popular. Btw does that mean you’ll wear a bracelet too? A nice Armani ?
I think it is a good idea, we should start with all the illegal mexicans in Texas and California and deport their a$$e$ back to mexico. We will save a lot of money in taxes and more jobs will open up.
Its hideous, in a country which champions freedom all over the world. I don't see it much different from Taliban asking Hindus to wear a symbol, Israelis marking Palestinian/Muslim car license plates differently.
UTD, but we are the land of equal discriminati..err opportunity. Why not take it one step furthre and get those illegals taken care of while we are at it. You know, kill two birds with one bracelet...I mean stone.
what if u have sensitive skin and u can not tolerate anything but gold..can they hook u up with a gold bracelet then. or can i sue them for a bracelet that is causing allergic reactions.
If this idea ever comes to life, I am sure a new fashion trend will start. You know like that synthetic yellow (or any other color ) band people have been wearing around their wrist.
