Moms 2012- 2013

Re: Moms 2012- 2013

yeah i was also not taking folic acid (before getting pregnant)n was not ttc as i conceived the very first night....it was unplanned pregnancy....
but i was eating healthy before n throught out my pregnancy...my iron levels as well as vitamin needs foe my body were perfect but still doctor prescribed for vitamins and iron as baby consumes them too from us....

Re: Moms 2012- 2013

^ Thank you for saying that. I was having misgivings about taking my vitamins after reading a few posts. gonna make sure i take mine every night (i sometimes forget :( ).

Re: Moms 2012- 2013

Agreed that the baby consumes them from us. It is more a problem for US if we don't take them. For example baby will draw Calcium from our BONES if we don't have it in our system, so basically MOMS suffer any lack of vitamins.

But it is ALWAYS better to get this stuff in diet rather than supplement form. We all come from good financial backgrounds which can afford good diets, I just bank a lot on the diet. For instance, I have kelloggs cornflakes and if you read that packet, it is packed with vitamins and minerals. I will have skimmed milk. etc etc

Re: Moms 2012- 2013

aww its ok if u forget i’m sure you are eating healthy too but its good to take them so that there will be less problems…best of luck!:flowers:

Re: Moms 2012- 2013

Re: Moms 2012- 2013

actually it is not so much my doctor not prescribing them. I stayed away from them in first trimester since I don't want to overdose on any vitamin. I am a doctor myself and I worry about these things. Here are articles for your reading pleasure women, just know what you are eating dietary wise, and discuss with your doctors too ok?

An overdose of synthetic nutrients can mean bad news for you and your pregnancy. Supplementing your diet with very high doses of any vitamin or mineral can put the health of your pregnancy, and your baby’s life, in jeopardy.

Vitamin A
Signs of overdose toxicity include headache, nausea, vomiting, drowsiness, and shedding or peeling of the skin after 24 hours. Blurred vision and frontal headaches are often the first signs of toxicity. Overdose during the 1st trimester has been linked to birth defects such as facial and nerve abnormalities.

Vitamin D
Signs of overdose toxicity include muscle weakness, headache, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, and bone pain.** Maternal overdose can cause mental and/or physical retardation in infants.**

Vitamin E
Signs of overdose toxicity include nausea, headache, fatigue, easy bruising and bleeding,** double vision (at dosages as low as 200 mg), and muscle weakness.**

Vitamin C
High doses can cause diarrhea and upset stomach, and can also cause newborn scurvy.

Vitamins B1, B2, B12, and Folate
Vitamin B overdoses may, at times, be generally asymptomatic.
Vitamin B2 turns the urine yellow-orange.
Vitamin B1 (i.e., thiamine) toxicity effects may include the following:
- Rapid heart beat
- Low blood pressure
- Irregular heart beat
- Headache
- Symptoms of allergic reaction
- Weakness
- Convulsions

Vitamin B3 (i.e., niacin)
Signs of overdose toxicity include skin flushing, itching, wheezing, headache, diarrhea, and vomiting.

Vitamin B6 (i.e., pyridoxine)
Signs of overdose toxicity include rapid breathing, burning pains, loss of muscle coordination, clumsiness, and paralysis.

Folate (folic acid)
High doses greater than 1000µg per day can mask a potential deficiency of B12, and very high doses of 15,000µg per day or more can cause central nervous system damage.

Calcium
Early signs of overdose can include constipation (severe), dryness of mouth, headache (continuing), increased thirst, irritability, loss of appetite, mental depression, metallic taste, unusual fatigue or weakness.

Iron
Early symptoms of iron overdose can include diarrhea (may contain blood), fever, nausea, stomach pain or cramping (sharp),** severe vomiting (may contain blood). **Symptoms of iron overdose may not occur for up to 60 minutes or more after the overdose was taken. By this time you should have had emergency room treatment. Do not delay going to the emergency room while waiting for signs to appear. High doses around the time of delivery may cause complications.

Zinc
Rare side effects seen with large doses include chills, continuing ulcers or sores in mouth or throat, fever, heartburn, indigestion, nausea, sore throat, unusual fatigue or weakness. Elevated doses during 3rd trimester can cause premature birth and stillbirth.

There is no way you can overdose on one prenatal pill a day :hehe:

Moms 2012- 2013

For ttc. I've just started taking GNC pre-natals.
It says 3 capsules a day but I take twice a day. Should I make it to one? Or it's ok to take 2?

Re: Moms 2012- 2013

the water soluble vitamins b complex and c dnt get stored in your body, so u wudnt overdose on them. and folic acid is hugely beneficial. i feel our diet isnt as varied and balanced as it shd be so supplements are quite beneficial.
ladies just go with what your doc prescribes and dnt change your mind bcz some1 says so on the net, ppl have diff opinions

Re: Moms 2012- 2013

mrs.c ask your doc :)

Re: Moms 2012- 2013

is anyone here from riyadh? need to know of a good gynecologist here

Re: Moms 2012- 2013

I wouldnt say it is the pill wendy, it's more keeping a track of what you are consuming via your diet as well.

Re: Moms 2012- 2013

consult your doctor.
although if it says 3, you should be taking 3, since they've probably adjusted the quantities of vitamins in each pill so that at the end of the day, you are getting the full amount you need.
